I really loved this book. The main character is adorable, and the narration is clear and inspiring!
I believe it's very important for young girls to see that their curiosity can lead to amazing discovers and that there are role models in the STEM world for them to look up to.
I think this book should be in every classroom, all children would benefit from having more women role models!
I learned a thing or two - I had no idea that Cleopatra had been a scientist! It's the history, the information, along with the main character and charming illustrations that lead me to give this 5 stars/triquetras!
This short book that introduces five women in history who studied and experimented with chemistry, is just that, an introduction. It presents a few basics of the science as well as shows female role models in the field for readers who are just getting started with finding out more about this exciting field of science. I enjoyed the bright illustrations and think this book will appeal to a wide range of readers.
This paired nicely with our chemistry study this year, highlighting a few women who've made contributions to chemistry, from an Egyptian alchemist up through the present day. Each story is interspersed with information about the basics of chemistry. I was surprised not to see Marie Curie anywhere though. I guess we'll have to find a separate biography of her.
A wonderful book for children who are interested in learning more about Chemistry and the fabulous ladies that contributed to the discovery of Chemistry with their rigorous experiments. I was so happy to read a book that shared stories about these amazing women who have contributed to scientific discoveries. When you read books about science, men are primarily the scientist and the ones who are being congratulated for their discoveries. This book is perfect for young girls to get inspired to join the world of Science and to make a difference.
This book includes 5 ladies that contributed to scientific discoveries in Chemistry. I was happily surprised that two women brought DNA to life. Rosalind Franklin was able to take images of what DNA looks like. Then Ada Yonath discovered that our bodies create a copy of DNA. I was fascinated to hear that two ladies were able to give us more details on our DNA. This book provides children with a beginners knowledge of Chemistry. It goes over the Periodic Table and has vocabularies throughout the book. They also included a glossary at the end of the book. The story is very easy for children to understand and the illustrations are colorful and fun. Great book to learn more about Chemistry.

An entertaining and informative read fit for the entire family!
"Women in Chemistry" follows the ruminations of an adorable young girl who questions what the world is made of. In response, the story talks about the basics of chemistry as well as women who have accomplished great feats in the world of STEM. Illustrator Danielle Pioli does a wonderful job of creating distinct, fun settings and personalities for each woman.
As a society, we so often skim over women in traditionally male areas of study that this book is an anchor for remembering females' impact. Without people like Dawn Shaugnessy and Ada Yonath, science would not be the advanced field we know today. It's with simplicity and patience that this book covers the accomplishments of such women.
In conclusion, this delightful picture book not only teaches young audiences facts about chemistry, but also that the sky is the limit—regardless of gender, race, socioeconomic class, or other socially defining features, you can do anything you put your mind to.

I love that the first woman in this book is Cleopatra the Alchemist. I thought it was that the famous Queen of Egypt was also an alchemist, but apparently there's a DIFFERENT Cleopatra which, also cool.
Whereas the Women in Biology were mostly thoughtfully going about their work, the women in this book have GREAT expressions. (I enjoyed the illustrations in the first book, don't get me wrong; I just was really struck by all the women in this book.) Cleopatra looks almost maniacal with excitement, Marie-Anne Pauze Lavoisier is a calm French woman but she has the big hair of 18th/19th-century France, Dawn Shaughnessy seems so cool with her utter calm, Rosalind Franklin (who Wikipedia tells me was Jewish? I did not know this!) has this great low-key butch hair and outfit with an unreadable expression, and Israeli Ada Yonath has thick curly grey hair and this nice tailored pinstripe suit and a great grin.
Chemistry's difficult to make really kid-accessible 'cause it's lots of (sub)microscopic stuff -- atoms, elements, molecules, DNA, etc. -- and I feel like even as an adult I was only sort of vaguely following along ... like I read the sentence and don't think, "I have no idea what you're saying," but do I actually understand what's being described, like really much at all? Not really.
Also, "All the matter in the universe is made up of just three tiny particles: protons, neutrons and electrons," really? We couldn't at least mention that scientists have found even smaller units that make up THOSE (e.g., quarks) and that there could be even smaller things making up those?
I support encouraging young girls and kids of color to be interested in science, though.
There's a good bit of technical detail in some of the illustrations here, which helps make the book appropriate across a wider range of levels.
Like in the other books of the series, five female scientists are profiled, and the book briefly introduces their science and some more basic context.
The women were from a wide variety of times, and there was more geographic diversity than in Women in Biology. In terms of field, there were: *Two analytical chemists (ish; these were the two who worked longest ago) *Two crystallographers/biochemists *One nuclear chemist I would have liked to see more variety in chemistry fields, but it's hard to balance diversity in time, place, and field.
"When you ask a question and look for an answer, you are already a chemist" rubbed me wrong. There are lots of kinds of questions and answers (see the other books in this series! look at any field people do research in!); not all of them are chemistry.
The transitions within the book felt more natural to me than in Women in Biology, but the beginning wasn't as good. "What is the world made of?" is presented in the illustration as more of a geological question, and that's not the direction the book goes. It doesn't feel like a good lead-in to Cleopatra the Alchemist, and the book doesn't circle back at all.
Sometimes the dates on the scientists were a full range, sometimes a single year (without - to indicate still living), and sometimes they weren't there at all.
This well-written and organized book is a wonderful way to introduce elementary and middle-grade readers to the world of chemistry. Wissinger offers simple explanations with appropriate illustrations making the content clear and easy to comprehend.
The short book packs a ton of information in forty pages. Young scientists learn about matter, elements, atoms, DNA, X-rays, chemical reactions, the periodic table, and so much more. There is a brief history of the contributions by women in chemistry going way back to Cleopatra. The glossary adds additional information to explore. The tone is positive encouraging the young reader to embrace scientific exploration.
I am looking forward to reading more books in this new nonfiction science exploration series.

This is a great early elementary introduction to five different women scientists who made important contributions to the field of chemistry. It would be a great book to start a STEAM/STEM lesson or experiment with elementary students because it touches upon what chemistry is, what elements are and what DNA is in an accessible way. It’s also a great way for elementary age students - especially girls - to see the important work of women in the sciences.
In Women in Chemistry we learn Cleopatra the Alchemist was the first female chemist recorded.
Chemistry is the science of matter and the changes matter goes through.
Women in Chemistry does a great job in defining Chemistry. We meet women who were instrumental in putting measurements on the map, how chemistry experiments work by discovering new elements, and what DNA and crystallography look like. After reading Women in Chemistry I have a greater appreciation of Chemistry. Danielle Pioli’s illustrations helped define what was written.
