Surreal, fantastical, and sometimes even silly illustrations. Def. of the 1970s pop psychedelic style, and not at all authentic to any period of European history (though they may appear so at first). And, yes, though the story is authentically M.E., there is indeed the connection you hear with Orpheus. Weirdly told story... and no notes.

Medieval version of Orpheus and Eurydice retold for children. The illustrations are gorgeous!
