I love cookbooks with photos, and this book hits the spot! The pages are completely covered with beautiful photos that capture not only the food, but the essence of where the recipes came from. It would be a coffee table page turner...... I have made many of these recipes, and they do not disappoint! While some may be what I call "ingredient heavy", you wouldn't want to eliminate any of them. My kids often request the "Shakin' The Shack Potato Salad" and the "Old Fashioned Meatloaf" The recipes can be labor intensive, but well worth the effort if you want to show off when company comes over.

This is as much American Studies as it is a cookbook/ An amazing job has been done by the photographer and layout artist--as well as the namer of the recipes ["Great Balls of Fire" for meatballs] to evoke a truly American dining experience. Throughout the book an effort is made to chronicle menus, neon window signs, posters, and the presentation of the food in its near-natural habitat, the great American diner. Recipes are simply stated, clearly written, and temptingly presented in a large format book.
