This picture book will delight children between the ages of 5 to 9. It is told in a unique story format from the perspective of Cutter a Monarch caterpillar. Children will learn fascinating facts about this caterpillar as the story unfolds. They will also discover the amazing transformation of one caterpillar into a butterfly.
Cutter is a caterpillar that eats, grows and sheds his outer skin a number of times. Although he lives a simple life on milkweed leaves, it often is filled with danger.
A few weeks later he feels different, and he senses that he needs a very long rest. This time, as he hangs upside-down on the stalk of a milkweed leaf, great changes occur to his body. Cutter transforms into Flutter, a beautiful Monarch butterfly.
He wastes no time in exploring a vast new world that he never knew existed. Eventually, he joins many other Monarchs in a wondrous migration to Mexico.
This book will let kids see how wondrous the natural world can be. It will also encourage them to follow Flutter's example and discover what is beyond the world they are familiar with.
Thank you to Sharon Clark and Net Galley for a free copy of this book in trade for an honest review.
I love this book! It’s got a beautiful illustration, as well as a detail story on the growing process of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The illustration is quite detail and the colors is very bright and contrast. The process of when the caterpillar is changing into a cocoon is told in a friendly yet scientific way. How the caterpillar is feeling hungry and sleepy or when he feels that his skin is too tight and he need to shed it.
The story is told in a way that children could easily understand or relate to it. As parents, we could also explain to them the way the growing process went and connect it with everyday life. This is a book I would love to tell my boy when he grows up.
Recommend for those who love to read biology in a fun way with good and detailed illustration to explain things.
I found this book on one of my Goodreads group's pages and decided to share it with my children. In The Caterpillar That Learned to Fly children learn of the butterfly lifecycle by watching Cutter the caterpillar change into Flutter the Monarch butterfly. Both of my school age children enjoyed it and the whole family walked away learning something new. Some of the cool interesting facts that we learned included * how many pairs of legs a caterpillar has compared to a butterfly * butterflies' ability to taste with their feet * Monarch butterflies migrate THOUSANDS of miles away for the winter
This story is told from the viewpoint of a caterpillar named Cutter. The story works its way through Cutter’s life cycle. We get to read about his life as a caterpillar and the changes he went through to become a butterfly. This story would work well with the science curriculum (life cycles). It was very informative and provided lots of details on the life cycle process. There was a lot of writing on each page which may make it difficult for younger kids to stay focussed. Also, higher vocabulary was frequently used throughout the book so there may need to be lots of explanations on what words mean.
This is a great picture book that young children will enjoy. It's told from the view point of Cutter, the caterpillar. As the story unfolds you learn wonderful facts about caterpillars and the amazing transformation that they go through to become butterflies.
My sister is due with her first child in May of 2018... I started collecting childrens books the day I found out that I was going to be an aunt! I enjoyed this book and have added it to that collection. I can't wait to read it to my future niece or nephew!
“The Caterpillar that Learned to Fly” is an excellent children’s picture book that follows the journey of a caterpillar as it discovers the wonders of transformation and flight. The story follows a curious caterpillar who dreams of the joy of being able to fly and the power of change. This book captures imaginations for young readers making the book easy to follow along with the themes of the caterpillar’s determination, resilience, and sense of wonder. The books strength lies in the ability to inspire children to embrace their own potential and not be limited by the expectations of others. The caterpillars transformation is beautiful and the illustrations match up with the text perfectly. It serves for personal growth and the importance of believing in yourself. The illustrations are very vibrant and adds to the imagination of young children reading this book. The use of color, texture, and details help makes the story come more to life and easier to visualize. This book would be an excellent addition to any early childhood classrooms or ages 3 to 8 and could also be in at home libraries.
What a great book. It is quite a reality the caterpillar that becomes a butterfly. I have had a horrible time with reading comprehension so picture and illustration books I still love and believe it is all ages for whats family friendly & imaginative which is important for human brain nourishment. Otherwise, it has usually been keywords or index words to keep note of & then somehow its easier from there to get the actual story going on which in this case is the caterpillar's natural phase in life becoming a butterfly. I think of the Bible and creation; and in that text too, there is likely a list of index words, keywords, and a glossary. Oh, the caterpillar to butterfly.

Filled with interesting facts about these beautiful butterflies, the story is written in simple language easy to understand for young readers. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for a digital copy to review.
