Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and Nobel Prize laureate in 1929, known for his series of highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas, noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann, and three of his six children, Erika Mann, Klaus Mann and Golo Mann, also became important German writers. I am afraid the upshot of the matter will be that I continue to live, to eat, to sleep, to dabble in this and dabble in that; and gradually, as my apathy increases, I shall get used to being a 'wretched and ridiculous figure.'"

An absolute joy to read! Showing the strong—though, it must be remembered, early—style of Mann. And though, as mentioned, it is an early work, and so lacks the beauty in writing of his greater works, it none the less has a very real charm. A real charm!

"Il pagliaccio" è un breve romanzo che racconta la storia prima di un bambino e poi di un uomo che fondamentalmente non sa fare nulla, tant'è che il padre ritiene possa fare soltanto il pagliaccio e pensa pure di ritirarlo da scuola. È la storia della paralisi di un intellettuale,esteta che, ereditata una discreta somma alla morte dei genitori, vive con parsimonia di cose belle, tra opera e lettura. Di fatto vive isolato, incapace di misurare la propria felicità e veramente il proprio valore se non con gli occhi degli altri,in particolare ricordando un episodio a Palermo. Da una solitudine per superiorità finisce col diventare spettatore delle vite altrui, soprattutto quando scopre l'amore, forse, incrociando lo sguardo di una giovane donna a cui un giorno si avvicinerà incapace di dominare se stesso e di provare, pigro e inetto come è, ad avvicinarsi al sogno.

Essere sé stessi non è mai facile, si passa per egoisti, misantropi o inetti, buffoni, pazzi invasati; non lasciarsi toccare dall’altrui influenza è un esercizio arduo e continuo ma se cediamo beh, la disfatta è dietro l’angolo. La contaminazione ha avuto luogo e nulla sarà più come prima.

Davvero toccanti le considerazioni del protagonista sul concetto di felicità ed infelicità, anche se breve il racconto si riesce facilmente ad immedesimarsi in viaggio con lui e ad immaginare di stargli accanto quando parla dell’obbligo che ha verso se stesso di provare gioia in quello che fa ogni giorno.

Der Bajazzo wird in ein wohlhabendes Elternhaus geboren, in welchem er eine unbesorgte und heitere Kindheit an der Seite seiner liebevoll-verträumten, musikalisch begabten Mutter verbringt. Herrlich schildert Mann die kindlichen Fantasien des jungen Bajazzo in reichen Details, z. B.: „Es handelte sich um ein großes und wohlausgestattetes Puppentheater, mit dem ich mich ganz allein in meinem Zimmer einschloß […] meine linke Hand ruhte auf einer großen runden Pappschachtel, die das einzig sichtbare Orchester-Instrument ausmachte.“ In der Schule lebt der Junge seine Fantasien als Schauspieler und Komiker zur Unterhaltung seiner Mitschüler aus, während seine schulischen Leistungen eher zu wünschen übrig lassen. Es ist sein Vater, der ihm bald „eine Art Bajazzobegabung“ zuschreibt: „Er kann liebenswürdig sein, wenn er Lust hat, er versteht es, mit den Leuten umzugehen, sie zu amüsieren, ihnen zu schmeicheln, er hat das Bedürfnis, ihnen zu gefallen […].“ Da schulische Leistungen nicht mehr von ihm zu erwarten sind, begibt er sich auf Wunsch seines Vaters in eine kaufmännische Lehre und führt auch in dieser kein schlechtes Leben. Er tut bei der Arbeit das Nötigste und liest in seiner Freizeit begeistert alles, was ihm in die Hände fällt. Als jedoch wenig später seine Eltern kurz hintereinander sterben, entscheidet sich der junge Mann, alles hinter sich zu lassen und mit einem Teil seines Erbes auf Reisen zu gehen. Nach drei Jahren durch Europa lässt er sich als Fünfundzwanzigjähriger, „mit einigen Erfahrungen und Erkenntnissen versehen“ zu einem „ungestörten und beschaulichen Dasein“ in einer kleinen deutschen Residenzstadt nieder. Da er bescheiden lebt, braucht er nicht zu arbeiten und verbringt seine Tage mit Lesen, Musizieren, Flanieren und dem Besuchen kultureller Veranstaltungen. Und doch „ […] beschleicht dich ein Gefühl der Abneigung von aller Welt und dir selbst; die Ängstlichkeit befällt dich wieder […]“. So stellt er bei aller allgemeiner Zufriedenheit immer wieder den Sinn seines Daseins in Frage, bis er eines Tages auf eine attraktive junge Dame stößt, in die er sich verliebt. Ihre Wege kreuzen sich wiederholt und ihm wird klar, dass er nicht mehr dem Stand und „Niveau“ entspricht, das es ihm ermöglichte, um diese Frau zu werben. „Das Gefühl, daß ich […] hier störte und mich lächerlich machte, befiel mich. Unsicherheit, Hilflosigkeit, Haß und Jämmerlichkeit verwirrten mir den Blick […].“ Er muss mitansehen, wie sie sich mit einem anderen, erfolgreicheren und angeseheneren Mann verlobt und geht daran zu Grunde. „War diese Liebe nicht eine Ausgeburt meiner längst schon gereizten und kranken Eitelkeit, die beim ersten Anblick dieser unerreichbaren Kostbarkeit peinigend aufbegehrt war und Gefühle von Neid, Haß und Selbstverachtung hervorgebracht hatte, für die dann die Liebe bloß Vorwand, Ausweg und Rettung war? Ja, das alles ist Eitelkeit!“ Am Ende ist es sein großes Unglück:, „das Gefallen an sich selbst einzubüßen.“ Faszinierend fand ich beim Lesen immer wieder Manns detailreiche Beschreibungen und genaueste psychologische Beobachtungen, so zeitlos, dass sie mich problemlos auch im Jahr 2023 ansprechen. Mann schließt seine Novelle mit des Bajazzos Erkenntnis: „Sei, wie du willst, lebe, wie du willst, aber zeige kecke Zuversicht und kein böses Gewissen, und niemand wird moralisch genug sein, dich zu verachten.“ Eine kurzweilige, wunderbar geschriebene Lektüre, die mit mancher Textstelle zum Nachdenken anregt.

Il pagliaccio

In questo racconto seguiremo le riflessioni di un giovane ventisettenne. Figlio della buona borghesia, sin da piccolo manifesta una particolare inclinazione per l’arte, in questo viene incoraggiato dalla madre ma osteggiato dal padre, che lo considera un pagliaccio, mantre avrebbe voluto si dedicasse al mondo del commercio. Egli accetta passivamente la volontà paterna, ma quando i genitori muoiono, lasciandogli una ricca eredità, molla tutto e intraprende un lungo viaggio in Italia, dedicandosi all’arte, visitando musei, teatri…Dopo tre anni rientra in Germania e si stabilisce in una piccola cittadina, trascorrendo il suo tempo tra letture, teatro in una monotona routine. Quando casualmente s’invaghisce di una giovane, non essendo capace di relazionarsi, ed assiste al suo fidanzamento con un altro giovane cade in uno stato di inquietudine e lèggeremo le sue elucubrazioni mentali.

Conoscevo già Thomas Mann, avendo letto alcuni suoi libri e non sono stata sorpresa dalla capacità introspettiva dei suoi personaggi. Anche in questo breve racconto seguiremo i turbamenti e gli stati d’animo, altalenanti, che affliggono il giovane che passa dal sentirsi felice per la sua monotona vita a quello di non apprezzarla. Questo racconto ci induce a farci le stesse domande del giovane: Non è sufficiente nella vita fare solo le cose che più amiamo per essere felici? Perché tutto ciò non ci basta? Alla fine il giovane si arrende ad essere solo un pagliaccio accettando il buio e la luce.

Il primo libro di Mann che leggo. Mi è piaciuto molto, nonostante sia breve, non viene avvertito come tale. Il personaggio è ben caratterizzato e sviluppato; Lo riassumerei come un artista che non ha seguito la sua arte e ha scelto la mediocrità.

Consigliato per approfondire Thomas Mann. Un Thomas irrequieto, scontento e dibattuto tra quello che vorrebbe essere e quello che sente di essere...come pagliaccio che non ha ancora deciso se essere triste o comico. racconto breve del 1897, consigliato per completare il personaggio autobiografico Hanno dei Buddenbrook.
