Looking in on Jane Austen's book, Pride & Prejudice, we could feel like Elizabeth Bennet did about her parents - she could see many things lacking in their relationship. We can almost hear her exclaim, "How did those two ever fall in love?" She respected her father and had a close bond with him, but all she had ever heard was that he was captivated by youth and beauty, and even that was said with some sarcasm. Surely there was more to the story than what youthful naivete had caused her to think. For Elizabeth Darcy, who is now caring for her aged father, the desire to know that story moves her to ask him to relate it while there is still time. What she learns proves to be filled with one surprise after another! Most of all it, however, it proves to be an unexpected gift for herself and her dear papa. This is the story told by the only person who can tell it ... this is Mr. Bennet's story.
Noe and his wife of over 40 years met in Houston, TX and now live in Corpus Christi. Together they have been self-employed most of their married life, home-schooled their son and are perpetual do-it-yourself-ers. Their experience in that area led them to self-publishing all their books. Noe also does scroll saw wood art, including making pieces of some of the characters in his books. Over the years, they've had two great Maine Coon cats and two super dogs that lived for over ten years. They now have one dynamic little Maltese/Shih tzu lady they named Ceelee. How many of us can define our lives as before and after children? How many times can we surprise our children with tales of "before we had you...." that makes them wonder if we were two different people? Children who are surprised to learn that mom and dad used to have this thing called "fun" that did not include a trip to Disneyland or McDonald's? The things we focus on and worry about change drastically when we have children. This has been true for parents since the beginning of time. Parents change their focus from their own pleasures and wants to making sure their children are set up for the best possible future. This is the same for Mr. and Mrs. Bennet in P&P, they used to be people who had fun and enjoyed life, made mistakes, fell in love and dreamed of a future with a family all their own. I was so happy to get a glimpse, and a reminder, that the Bennets could be seen in a light before children, to get a chance to see them as their once were when their hopes and dreams were more than the well being of their children. Do yourself a favor and read this, you not only get a great story but it is also a chance to remind yourself of your own life before your children and who you were!
Concepts of including literature was a good idea but so odious in the end. Such love at the beginning for his partner then in the the actual novel such a dislike for each other. How did the two come to be in this way. Easy time passer.
I feel kind of like Lizzy in this story. My parents have already died and there are so many questions I wish I had asked them when I had the opportunity, so this was very touching for me to see her have the chance to talk with her dad and have her eyes opened to the kind of people her parents were before they met and married. It was wonderful to read how Mr. Bennet's personality as a younger man didn't change much from the man we see in the P&P movies of 1940, 1995, and 2005 - a happy sort of guy whose daughters and wife loved him. And seeing Mrs. Bennet as a young lady with her sister and mother, what a perfect portrayal that is! The last two chapters especially touched me, I shed a few tears on those pages. Lizzy tells her father, "please let me say on behalf of all my sisters, you are the best father five silly daughters could have ever wished for" ... and I quite agree.
How does a man like Mr Bennet could married a woman like Mrs Bennet (Miss Gardener)?
Everything you ever wanted to know will be answered in this book. You get to know Mr Bennet so much better and will learn why Mrs Bennet is just like the woman we know from Pride and Prejudice.
It's all about their get-to-know-phase which wasn't always so clear and easy.
I actually don't want to talk too much about it because the end is mostly well known apart of two things.
This is a wonderful and lovely, heartbreaking and sweet book.
Noe and Cindy created something really special. They made their own Jane Austen universe with their five related 'Pride and Prejudice' books.
Every time I read a new book I feel the love inside. The love for the story about Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy is so warm and huge. I believe that they read it like hundrets of times just to be in it and not forget one detail.
It's unique that they created something which is so wonderful and special totally new. In different views.
