Noe and his wife of over 30 years met in Houston, TX and now live in Corpus Christi. Together they have been self-employed most of their married life, home-schooled their son and are perpetual do-it-yourself-ers. Their experience in that area led them to self-publishing all their books. Noe also does scroll saw wood art, including making pieces of some of the characters in his books.
Over the years, they've had two great Maine Coon cats and two super dogs that lived for over ten years. They now have one dynamic little Maltese/Shih tzu lady they named Ceelee.

For anyone who takes pride in what they write and would like to do it better, I have these suggestions:

To begin with, identify your strengths and weaknesses. For instance, let’s take strengths. Do you have the ability to describe a scene well? Then use that to your advantage. But be careful that you don’t needlessly accentuate your strength by over doing it, or better said, doing it unnecessarily. What I mean by this is, if you have a knack for description and use it just to fill pages, your readers will very likely end up flipping pages to get to the part of the story that is relevant.

On the matter of weaknesses, if you know you have trouble with something like dialog, then read books that have a lot of dialog in them - and read to learn. If you can, pinpoint what it is about whatever kind of writing that appeals to you, that puts you on a better footing to identify where your writing is going off.

Another suggestion: you might find it helpful to challenge yourself by writing about something that you normally wouldn’t. As an example, if you write romance, try writing a mystery and so on. This is primarily to enhance your skills at what you do like to write, but who knows - you may find you do better at another genre.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate what I said at the beginning ... what makes someone a writer is their putting down on paper their own thoughts into stories, poems, or even songs. Kafka, the German writer, complained that he had little time for writing because of his day job - but he is not remembered for his day job, he’s remembered for his writing. At times the dilemma doesn’t seem fair, that some can write for a living and others, like Kafka, have to actually make time to write; but after all, that’s what makes us writers ... we make the time to write.(less)

Thank you for accepting, Sophia! Most of our family and friends don't like to read - can you imagine? - so we're glad to find those who do here on Goodreads. It's either Noe or Cindy that are commenting here, and often both of us work on the same comments together ... so, hello from both of us!

Sophia Thanks for the friend request, Noe!
