Dunne #4

Onneksi on paras ystävä perheineen tukena. Ja mukava mummo.

I read this book in my master's degree literature courses. The book has received several awards USBBY Outstanding International Books List, Winner, 2017, Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) Choices, Winner, 2017, Notable Award Kirkus Best Middle-Grade Books of the Year, Winner, 2016. The plot in "Life According to Dani" is about the story of a little girl, developing the theme of Dani's first summer vacation—and the best! She is staying on an island with Ella, her best friend in the world. Her dad, who had an accident is still in hospital but he calls every day, and Ella and Dani stay busy building huts, fishing, exploring, and swimming. Then Dad turns up but with his nurse too! This is a contemporary realistic fiction chapter book, where her principal character Dani, and Ella her best friend is another crucial character in the story. The set plot on an island surrounded by nature transmits a relaxed and happy mood environment, full of adventure and fun. Throughout the chapters, the illustrator uses black-and-white pictures with shadows that share emotions with simple lines and curves. Those pictures complement very well the text, which on some pages is less giving more relevance to the pictures that tell the story as well.
This book is appropriate to use in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, in reading aloud, independent reading, analyzing chapters, reading comprehension, recognizing text structure, doing inference of pictures, identifying cause/effect, and so on.

In what appears to be the second outing of Dani’s happy adventures, Dani’s happiness suffers a temporary derailment. When Dani’s father is hospitalized after an accident, Dani spends her first summer break on the island with her best friend Ella’s family. Though she certainly misses her father, Dani is happy on the island until she learns, in the worst possible way, that her father has a girlfriend. Having always been everything to her father, Dani does not take the news well. Dani’s reaction is spot-on and her father’s backtracking puts Dani in charge of getting to know Sadie, which, having read future volumes already, I know will work out well in the end. An empathetic and sweet book about changing family relationships (and good and not-so-good ways to share the news!).

This is one of my favorite kids' books ever. The plot is fine, but it is the way the book is written and illustrated that I love. In this book, the girls seem like really good friends, and they are amazing depictions of six year-olds. The things they say and the games they play remind me of when I was their age, and the whole thing just feels really warm. A lot of kids' books seem like they are trying to make the characters seem funny or cool, and that overrides the attention to realism and emotion. The truth is, though, that most kids would rather see someone that is like them than someone who is cool. It is also great that this book deals with series issues such as injury and parents having new partners in a book for such young kids.

Absolutely delightful addition to the Dani series of chapter books for the youngest readers. Dani and Jasper Johns could be fast friends. Dani's unique take on the world helps her navigate the ups and downs of summer vacations, family squabbles, and big life changes. The ending of this book surprised me, as it is not typical American storytelling for this age, but it was rewarding and authentic. Marvelously illustrated by Eva Erikkson and engagingly translated by Julia Marshall. Definitely share this series with kids. A new favorite!

In this book Dani is staying with Ella on her summer island. Dani's father gets better and comes home from the hospital on crutches. He gets a girlfriend named Sadie. Dani likes her but Ella doesn't like Sadie because she smokes. At the end of the book the girls see shooting stars in the sky and make a wish. Dani wishes that they can take their hamsters to school with them next year. Ella doesn't make a wish because she says, "When your here, Dani, I have everything I could wish for."

Charming stories though I continue to unimpressed with the father. Admittedly, he has dealt with a lot in this series but he does come across as self-centered with token times of affection.
The friends spend time together playing on the island and enjoying the quiet. Readers see them continue to grow up with hints that they are becoming individuals with separate interests as well.

This is my second book by this author, and I always feel like the story is a little older than the children it is intended for. I think a lot of kids might relate, but it's a pretty heavy subject for a young child to read.

This would make a great book for a child who's parents are divorced and are now beginning to date other people. Maybe their parents should read it ,too.

Such lovely illustrations but man are Swedish children's books bleak. My poor American heart was yearning for resolution.

This series of books is just delightful - funny, real, heartwarming, brave in the topics it tackles but all done with such a light touch. Such good books for children as read-alouds or read-alones.
