In these two delightful children's stories, young wolf cubs and young bear cubs explore their big, new worlds. Uncle Wolf teaches two young cubs all about being wolves in We Are Wolves. They learn to be watchers and listeners and travelers and hunters. But most important of all, they learn about their pack -- and being a family. In We Are Bears, Mother Bear teachers her new cubs all about being bears. They learn to be climbers and swimmers and diggers and sleepers. Mother Bear is very proud of them. The cubs' adventures come alive through beautifully detailed illustrations. Readers of all ages will enjoy and treasure these two beautiful books for generations.
I'm always looking for good books about the animals that we're likely to encounter in the wild. While the bears are given some human attributes and thoughts, the story does a respectable job of introducing young children to the ways of black bears.
This book, as well its pattern We Are Wolves, were purchased in a Yellowstone souvenir shop for my preschool grandboys. In this one, a mother black bear emerges from her den with two young cubs who need to learn what bears do. The text and the gorgeous illustrations by Lucia Guarnotta take readers through the forest discovering what foods bears eat, how they avoid predators and more. Not quite a picture book nor a narrative non-fiction, We Are Bears has elements of both meaning it will be difficult for a librarian to shelve. It should be placed in whichever section will get the most browsers because this beautiful book needs to be read and the gouache (I think) illustrations need to be admired.
This was a new book that came into the gift shop were I work. It is a great little story for children to start learning about black bears and how they grow and learn. The artwork is really well done, great detail with soft colours.
This book describes a mother and her two cubs and teaches about how bears survive. I think it would be a good writing mentor text because of the repetitive pattern.
