Jesus Invades George: An Alternative History

JESUS INVADES GEORGE is a grand satirical vision that employs the same comic voice as The Dice Man to answer the simple question: What would have happened if George Bush had awakened one morning in early 2007 and found he'd become possessed by Jesus? The answer is plenty. When Jesus forces George to start talking about withdrawing all American forces from the Middle East, the men who have made George desperately begin plotting to stop him. In this hilarious history you will also learn: Why Karl believed that his Policy of Eternal War would mean Republican governments 'til death do us part. How George, in Sadr City with only a single body guard, survived many assassination attempts, only to be nearly done in by a pizza. What happened when Jesus and George made love to Laura. How George, in the Holy Land, almost walked on water. What happened when Laura hired the world's foremost exorcist to rid George of the Terrible Spirit possessing him. How Hillary and Barack suddenly found they were to the right of George on just about every issue and didn't know how to deal with it. And finally, what happened when Dick and Don rallied the establishment to save the nation from the Christian terrorist George. And how the 2008 election turned out and the world lived happily ever after. Or not. Luke Rhinehart was the pen name of the author George Cockcroft.

He was born in the United States, son of an engineer and a civil servant. He received a BA from Cornell University and an MA from Columbia University. Subsequently he received a PhD in psychology, also from Columbia. He married his wife, Ann, on June 30, 1956. He has three children.

After obtaining his PhD, he went into teaching. During his years as a university teacher he taught, among other things, courses in Zen and Western literature. He first floated the idea of living according to the casting of dice in a lecture. The reaction was reportedly of equal parts intrigue and disgust, and it was at this point he realized it could become a novel. Cockcroft began experimenting with dice a long time before writing The Dice Man, but this made progress on the novel rather slow.

In 1971, London-based publisher, Talmy Franklin, published The Dice Man, Cockcroft's first novel as Luke Rhinehart. Soon afterwards, Cockcroft was engaged in the creation of a dice center in New York City.

In 1975, he was involved in a round-the-world voyage in a large trimaran ketch. Later, he spent some time in a sailboat in the Mediterranean, where he taught English and from there moved to a former Sufi retreat on the edge of a lake in Canaan, New York.

On 1 August 2012, at the age of 80, Cockcroft arranged for his own death to be announced, as a joke.

Cockcroft passed away (for real) at the age of 87 on November 6. 2020.

Only Luke Rhinehart could come up with a scenario where the President gets "taken over" by Jesus in a case of true religious conversion! In this satire, Luke takes the ridiculous and makes sublime comedy from it. It's the outrageous, iconoclastic "Diceman" author on devastating form again, getting straight to the heart of the sickness in American politics - and with lots of unforgettable imagery along the way.

Another favourite, I am quite partial to Luke Rhineheart. The story is in the tile; Jesus invades the body of George Bush. It starts with Jesus taking over George’s actions every time George opens his mouth. Then as George begins to mend his ways Jesus begins to take more of a backseat.

The book hits the ground running and straight away George decides to withdraw all troops from Iraq. I actually laughed out loud (which is rare for me) at some of the scenes in this book. All you have to do is imagine what would happen if Jesus really did invade the body of one of our modern day politicians. His encounters with other politicians, terrorist and his wife are priceless.

Whilst this is a really funny book it has to be noted that there is a darker side. Whilst I laughed virtually the whole way through by the time it ended I also felt a little bit depressed. It takes a really candid look at the wars that have been waged on the Middle East and the pointless waste of life and money that the war has led to. It puts across interesting ideas on what a country could do if they just stopped fighting and spending all their money on weapons. You could say well I don’t live in America but really is the UK that far behind in the stupidity stakes. I think not.

It’s a sad fact that politics really is corrupt and nothing to do with human interest. It would be great to think that there is a point in time when we will stop engaging in mindless fighting but I think the riots across the world in 2011 pretty much show otherwise.

So all in all read it because it is funny and makes a really good point all at the same time. Pretty rare qualities if you ask me.

You must read this- the satirical parallels running through Jesus Invades George are amazingly astute while being highly (and darkly) comical as well as blush inducing at times. All of the major players of the Bush III administration are there in gloriously exposed clarity. Imagine, what would Jesus do if he were president? What would he do if he happened to take over Bush's body mid-term? What would he do with Laura in bed? How would Dick and Rummy react to having their entire war plan dismantled? It's a book to be read and shared and read again. However, fair warning: There are somewhat graphical sex scenes between JC and Laura. Icing on the cake, in my opinion.
