Beneath the Inconstant Moon

Rate this book
Baltimore, 1844: Genevieve Cawley, the daughter of a flour mill owner, has been in love with Spencer Hayes since the day she first laid eyes on him many years ago. His father happens to own the most successful shipping company in all of Maryland. On the eve of his final departure to the Caribbean before he takes over the company, Ginny and Spencer wed in secret. She awaits his promised return, holding on to the belief that he will be back before the moon wanes twice.
As time passes, and Spencer does not return, Ginny finds herself slowly losing her grip on reality. Everyone else believes Spencer is dead, and when Ginny discovers she is carrying his child, her options are limited. Her parents insist she marry another man for the sake of her baby.
Soon, Ginny finds herself all alone in a place she does not recognize, full of faces she does not know, and a child no one else seems to care for.
But things are not exactly what they seem, and Ginny begins to search for answers, trusting no one.
Why have her parents disowned her?
Who are all these strange people?
Why won't anyone speak her name?
And what happened to the previous mistress no one dare mention?
As her world begins to crumble around her, can Ginny hold onto her sanity, or will it completely fade away beneath the light of the inconstant moon?

I.D. Johnson

ID Johnson wears many hats: mother, wife, editor, tutu maker, and writer, to name a few. Some of her favorite people are the two little girls who often implore that she "watch me!" in the middle of forming finely crafted sentences, that guy who dozes off well before she closes her laptop, and those furry critters at the foot of the bed at night. If she could do anything in the world, she would live in Cinderella's castle and write love stories all day while sipping Dr. Pepper and eating calorie-less Hershey's kisses. For now, she'll stick to her Dallas-area home and spending her days with the characters she's grown to love.

Victorian Romantic Suspense

Ginny focuses her attention on two things: watching the ocean for her love’s return and a tiny bundle.

The Victorian romantic suspense is a perfectly crafted diorama of life from 1846 to 1848. It captures the life of women, with their limited options based upon males. It’s also an entertaining mystery, teasing the reader with secret identities, love in unexpected places, and psychological twists bordering upon the demented.

A haunting tale of heartbreak and healing

Poor Ginny. My heart ached for her again and again. The poor girl loses her husband and is forced to remarry, beginning a miserable life with a man who she doesn't love. Three agonizing years later a miracle occurs and her lost husband returns, and then begins the torturous process of getting her back. A surprise ending to the story leaves the reader wondering what really happened.

A typical love story until the ship starts to flounder and the brand new married owner appears to be washed out to sea living his wife, with no proof of marriage home to face to consequences of being pregnant by herself….I only gave it a 4 star because I really don’t care for series type books but this one was well written, well plotted….and had the sea in it!

Well written book.

This book is different than my normal books.
There was something about the short introduction that caught my interest.
I did enjoy the main characters that had to go through a lot of bad things.
They did finally get it straightened out.
I read it in one setting.

Love drives you crazy

At least that's what happens to the main character in this story. This is a good one! Hard to put down. Liked it so much that I'm going to read the prequel to it, and learn the whole story of what happened to the first mrs. Edwards.

Oh my, sooo good.

This one was a page turner until the end. It was a little intriguing to see where the story was going and if Ginny would escape Mr. Edward’s or not. It’s a roller coaster of a read for sure.

Interesting story!

This was an interesting and sometimes sad, yet introspective story looking back at how different things were merely 200 years ago!

A love story with a difference.
This is a story of power and control, of masters and mistresses and loyalty in a time when women had little say in what happened to them. A sad, but well told story.

Intriguing and gripping up until the ending, which was too rushed and formulaic. Worth it for the gorgeous book cover alone!
