Haskins' seminal sixties classics, which include the groundbreaking Cowboy Kate , are landmarks in the history of photography, as revered today as they were when first published forty years ago. In Cowboy Kate , a lyrical tale of the triumph of youth played out by cowgirls of the old west, Haskins reinvented the genre of the nude with stunningly well-executed photographs, a cinematic approach, and a subtly engaging narrative. Often copied but rarely equaled, Haskins has an exceptional ability to photograph women with a sensitivity that has won him accolades from men and women alike. The "Director's Cut" is revised to include new and previously unpublished photographs.
I learned that this book works. At first I just thought that this book was cheesy and corny, but pretty to look at. However,my boyfriend Jon had a very different opinion. WOW! Thanks for the recommendation Julia.
@Brian, you are entitled to your opinion but Cowboy Kate is considered one of the most influential photobooks of the 60's and remains an inspiration to generations of photographers, designers and musicians. It's place in photo history was cemented by being included in the ICP NY show in 2005 on the history of the photobook and by winning the Prix Nadar in the year it was published....and BTW Sam did the book design, the art direction, the photography, set construction as well co-conceiving the story with his wife Alida. Don't make the mistake of thinking that whimsical fun cannot co-exist with serious creative photography. Photographic genius can be produced with a smile.
