A little dry but, otherwise, a good introduction to the period. The only criticism is that some information and theories are only very sketchily presented. A couple of generations after this, Akhenaten and his two immediate successors (which includes Tutankhamun) were "deleted" from official histories, so a lot of the information is given is speculation and theory - it would be more helpful to the novice to be told that "current evidence suggests that [such and such] is the most likely of these explanations", rather than being presented with two or three options and no indication which is most likely.

However, all that that does is make you want to find out more, so it doesn't really detract too much. What does detract somewhat more (to current tastes) is that all of the photgraphs and illustrations are black and white and some are none too clear. In a (budget) book published over 20 years ago this is again sonewhat forgivable.

If you are interested in Ancient Egypt, and the Amarna period in particular, it is worth an hour or two of your time (all it will take to read it).
