What if you could foresee death? Mirela can prophesy the death of whomever she sees. At thirteen, Ela foretold the death of her best friend, only to watch it happen before her very eyes. Ela, now twenty-one, spends her days locked away in her apartment, avoiding the public and the gift she considers a curse. Until he appears. Luka Conway is handsome. Charming. And magical. After Ela predicts yet another death, Luka leads her to an underground city hidden beneath Atlanta, populated by empaths, telepaths, and seers. Luka is a Shade, a soldier fighting a secret war against the Wraiths, a deadly group of sorcerers who wish to take over the world. Ela is given no choice; she must prove herself a Shade, and use her powers for the light, or she will be put to death. Resolved to her fate, Ela trains as a warrior, determined to put her curse to good use. Then Talon Michaels appears. He's just as dashing as Luka, and even more dangerous. A Wraith, Talon warns Ela that the Shades aren't all what they appear. Who can Ela trust, if anyone? Should her powers be used for good...or evil? Which should she choose?

The main character is Mirela, or as she prefers to be called Ella or Ela. She left the safety of her home and parents after having a dream, on her thirteenth birthday, of her best friend’s death. It came true! She can’t live with the knowledge that she caused her friend’s death and could do nothing about it and doesn’t want to endanger anyone else she knows. So she runs away.
Years later the story shows her living as a shut in, still having nightmares about people’s deaths, so avoiding go out in public. That is until she sees the death of the young boy who lives opposite her apartment. She feels she has to try and save him and this forces her out of her apartment. She receives a couple of strange communications along the way and also meets Luka, a Shade.
It seems magic is real and she is taken into a new underground world, called Hollow Grounds, on the premise that she will be able to learn how to control her curse, as she calls it. This new world is filled with others with an assortment of magical powers, but hers is highly sought after! There is a war ongoing, between Shades and an opposing force called Wraiths (not quite like on Star Trek).
She must decide if she is going to stay under the control of the Shades, or follow a Wraith called Talon, who appears to her one night. Each side says they are trying to save the world from the other side’s evil intentions to control the world. But who should she believe? It seems trying to leave one group will be treated as treason and the punishment is death.
I loved this opening book in the Hollow Grounds series. Coming into her powers at the ‘magical’ age of thirteen, considered in many cultures to mark the beginning of adulthood, was a good way to bring her curse to the front of her story. She soon learns there is more to her power than she ever knew. There is some background and memories of her previous family life and they embellish her story and make her real. Luka is a very likeable character as well and the mysterious Talon has a certain pull to him, drawing you in.
The book is fast paced and keeps your attention the whole way through, without any parts confusing you or dragging. I read this is one sitting and then even went on to read the next in the series, Stolen Magic, straight afterwards. I would highly recommend this to all readers, especially if you like a bit of fantasy mixed in with magic.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author, but have also gone ahead and bought the book as well. J.A. Culican is one of my favourite authors and every series they write just gets better and better. Such variety of characters and situations, but they all pull you in. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I genuinely loved this book. I think it's a wonderful start to a potentially great new YA series. This novel starts out with a flashback of Mirela's childhood trauma that has driven her to assume a position of complete isolation from others. She believes she is cursed, so she stays distant to protect those around her.
When she meets Luka, everything changes. She discovers the world of Hollows Ground: a world filled with people that all possess their own magical abilities. I found it an enjoyable experience to discover hidden agendas and secret family members along with Ela, and how can you not fall in love with Luka...dimples and all? One of my favorite things about this book, it's written from the perspective of a NA (new adult), but this book contains only light romantic glances...no over-erotic scenes. There. I said it.
That being said...another point I'll add to this review...this story felt a little bit rushed. There is a lot that happens in a very short span of time in this book, and I really feel a bit more could be added to the character development. That being said, this is a wonderful YA novel (no heated scenes at all) that will appeal to the young reader and older reading audience alike. It is high on fantasy, and intersperses elements of real life with the magic that makes up Hollows Ground. I honestly enjoyed reading this book, and can't wait to read Book 2 in this series!
Note to author...how about releasing a novella or two down the line with flashbacks on Ela and/or Lukas past? Just a thought :)
It's about time I got around to reading this. Culican sure does know how to write a captivating read. I blew through this one in no time, and now...the wait for book two.
Ela is a 21-year-old precognition with the ability to foresee the deaths of those she encounters. Having learned of what she could do at a young age, she ran from her family and all she knew to live a life of solitude, but that didn't keep the visions away. Nor did it stop powerful beings from finding her, and using her for their own gain.
With the intention to save an innocent young boy, Ela is instead captured and taken to Hollows Ground, where she is forced to fight for the Shades...or die. Though she has every reason to distrust the magical beings that have taken her hostage, she nevertheless develops a budding loyalty to the Shades and is willing to kill Wraiths for them. That is, until she meets a Wraith, and everything she had begun to trust fell through the cracks of her thinly-built loyalty. Who is she meant to fight for? Who can she trust? And will she even live long enough to find out?
So many questions! And the rapid pace of this book, while pleasantly brief, was just a bit TOO FAST for me to keep up with. I wanted some more build-up to the feelings of Ela and Luka. Honestly, everything about their dynamics gave me mental whiplash, and I just couldn't force myself to be moved by the final events of this short story. I expected more from Ela. But I am anticipating seeing how the conclusion of Second Sight plays itself out in book 2.
Second Sight is the first book by J.A. Culican I have read and I wasn't disappointed!
Mirela (Ela) is a young girl when she first learns of her magic - the ability to see death. The first death she sees is that of her best friend and she is unable to prevent it. She decides she should leave her family and live in solitude to protect them and everyone else from her "curse".
After years of living alone, with very little contact with people, Ela finds herself out in the world trying to save the life of a little boy whose death she has seen. She is unable to prevent the death but instead meets Luka. Luka also has magic and is an empath. He immediately senses Ela's magic and takes her to an underground city called Hollows Ground. Hollows Ground is home to the Shades, a group of magic-wielders trying to save innocents from a group of evil magic-wielders called the Wraiths.
Ela trains with Luka and is able to gain some control of her "gift". But she soon realises that not all is as it seems with the Shades and she begins to question who she can trust and who to believe. Will Ela make the right choice before it's too late?
I really enjoyed the story it is well written and fast paced. The intrigue and mystery around the two groups and their intentions is enough to keep you reading.
Second Sight is the first book in what is bound to be a fantastic YA fantasy series and I can't wait to read the next book which is due for release in 2018!

What if you could see peoples death before it happened? What kind of person would you be? Would you try to stop them or would you walk away? That was a decision Ela had to make when she was a child. She saw her best friend’s death and there was nothing she can do save her. So, she ran away… that’s what most people do when they’re scared. Fast forward and Ela is an adult with very limited contact with the outside world. She sees the death of a child and decides she’s going to risk her sanity and save him… only it was too late.
As if things wasn’t interesting enough, we meet Luca, who is just as special as Ela, but different. He’s an empath trying to help save the world… but is he fighting for the right side? He believes he’s doing the right thing, fighting along side the Shades against the Wraithes. Can you tell who is on the side of truth and who is lying? That is the question Ela has to answer when she meets Talon, a Wraith… with a twist!
This book was amazing! You can easily read 17 chapters in one night before you realize whay time it is! I was fascinated from chapter 1. You watch as Ela navigated her way through am unfamiliar world as she figures out who she can trust. The last couple of pages were devastating and I loved it. I found myself wanting revenge and I can’t wait to read the next installment!

This was a great book. I was instantly hooked. The author did a great job describing the world in which the story takes place. I like the main character in the book because it describes how Ela became who she was from the beginning. How she didn’t accept who she was and why she didn’t. I like how she grew into her character, but wished she believed in herself and her gut more. I connected with her and Luka because it wasn’t the instant connection like a lot of books have, but it was something that came over time. Something that they grew into as they came to appreciate one another. It was nice to not have the instant love connection right of the bat. I liked the story-line because it shows that not everything is as it seems and sometimes you need to follow your heart and gut over everything else even when everyone else is telling you that you are on the right path. This was a page turner for me and I can’t wait to see what this story holds. When someone holds as much power as Ela does, I can’t wait to see if she will use her powers for good… to help save people or for vengeance.

This is a young adult novel centered on a young woman named Mirela (Ela) who has a precognition ability which, after experiencing a trauma, causes her to isolate herself for many years. During her first foray from this self-imposed isolation she encounters Luka, who takes her to a hidden city where everyone has a magical ability of some sort.
I thought this book was ok, but not great. There are some interesting plot points and secondary characters, and the hidden city and its components are intriguing, however ultimately I found myself wishing those things had been expanded on as they were more interesting than the main characters. Unfortunately, I also found most of the book highly predictable, and not in a good way.
If you are looking for romance - there is little to none of that in this first book, which I think was good because I wasn't feeling chemistry between the leads as I read and it makes sense following Ela's isolation. I am curious about what is going to happen in the next book - Talon is one of the more interesting secondary characters and it appears there will be more of him.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This young person found out about a magical gift on her thirteenth birthday after a party about her best friend dying in a vivid dream. It turned out to be real. Her friend died the next day exactly as she was it in the dream. She was so afraid for her loved ones that she ran away right then and never socialized for years later until she met Luka who introduced her to other people who had different magic. She met several people, learned self defense, learned to start controlling her magic. She started to help those who she felt were being wronged. In doing so she even found her mother and some gypsies and helped free from possible death from the group that was using people who had magic to win wars yet kill them if they questioned the leaders and advisers. What a mess to deal with! The book is well done. Full of adventure and twists. There are little hints here and there to lead you through the end. Then it stopped! She's looking for revenge in the next book coming out in 2018. We gotta wait! Oh no! I can't wait for the next book of adventure and actions!
Mirela is a young Gypsy who discovers she has the ability to predict the death of people close to her. Upon the death of her best friend, she runs away from her family and never returns home.
Fast-forward several years... Mirela lives isolated and on her own. She tries to limit her exposure to other people as much as possible. When she realizes a child is going to die, she tries to get to the scene in time to save him, but is unsuccessful. In the process, her ability is discovered by Luka, who kidnaps her and takes her to a community of people with paranormal abilities.
This was a really fast-paced story that I finished very quickly. I enjoyed the storyline, but didn't really care for the characters nor the pacing of the story. All of the characters were so dramatic, quick to anger, and not very "real" to me. Even the adults seemed rather juvenile. I had hard time investing myself in the story and it didn't really make me care enough about it to want to read more.
This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won’t be my last. Mirela can see how and when people are going to die so she’s sequestered herself to keep from seeing death. One day, when she foresees the death of a neighbor child, she can’t take it anymore and decides it’s time to try and stop a death. After failing in her quest, she meets Luka who takes her to a place where magic is commonplace. But, not everything is as it seems and Mirela must make a deadly choice. I was very impressed with the world building and how well-written this book was. I didn’t really connect very well with a couple of the characters, but since I feel this was set-up book for a series, I didn’t mind that much. And, the end was very interesting and dramatic! I can’t say too much about that or I’ll give something away! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, and this author has a new fan! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Mirela is a normal pre-teen, then on her 13th birthday, she has a vision of her best friend's death. When her friend actually dies, in the exact same way that her vision foretold, she can't handle her curse & runs away.
After being a recluse, afraid to interact with people and see their deaths, Ela ventures out one day after a chance encounter with her 3 year old neighbor. As she rushes to try to stop his death, she finds that she is too late. But, she is met by a handsome young man who seems to know what she is going through & offers to take her to a place where she will be safe and appreciated.
This is a wonderful book, full of great characters, magic, the budding of young love and hundreds of other emotions. You'll cry, you'll rant & rave against the unfairness of life, you'll have hope that things can get better.
I love J.A. Culican's writing style and this book does not disappoint. The only drawback: I have to wait for the next book!
The premise for this book intrigued me, and the first few chapters drew me right in and didn't let go.
Ela has a gift that she considers a curse - she can tell when someone close to her is going to die. After watching a close friend die as a young girl despite her attempts to prevent it, she withdraws from society, becoming a veritable recluse. However, when she forces herself to spring into action again, she meets Luka, a "Shade" who belongs to a hidden community of magic that is embroiled in a vicous war with the Wraiths. Threatened, literally, with death if she doesn't prove herself, Ela begins her training, all the while wondering just who and what it is she's fighting for.
There are many twists an turns in this book, taking me in unexpected directions. I love it when a book does that.
An intense story of magic, what’s right and what’s wrong, who are the good guys, who are the bad guys. Again Ms Culican pulls out all the stops and writes a fantastic story for us to revel in. I read nonstop in one sitting. It all begins when Ela dreams about her best friend dying before it happened. It scared her so badly she became a recluse. She finally pulls herself out of it to try and stop another death she sees coming. That’s when she meets Luka. I fell in love with Luka right away. He was so caring and empathetic. He helped Ela become strong and self confident, to use her talent of Second Sight to save those lives that could be saved. But then she starts to have doubts about what side she should be fighting for. The outcome of her decision is yet to be determined in the next book of the series. This is a book I feel very confident about recommending to any age group.
ONE INCREDIBLE READ!!! Holy crap! Man, talk about tripping. Culican really brought it with this page turning dynamo. A rollercoaster ride of emotions and events that pull you in and rock you to the core. All the drama, heartache, fear, uncertainty, danger and suspense bring this read roaring to life brilliantly. An intense storyline and strong plot bring it all together and keeps you riveted on every word while on a razors edge. Culican weaves a world around you until nothing else exists. Twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and bumps here and there make one thrilling experience. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really captures this bad boy perfectly. Remarkable job Culican, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.

This book was okay. For me it's the sort of book read between heavier reads. It's a happy little read. I would probably read the next in the series even. That being said it was predictable in spots - you know where it's headed when she meets the leader and he immediately tells her that he needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. I wasn't attached to any of the characters. Most were background props for setting the stage.
I'm okay with this book being just okay. I enjoyed the afternoon I spent with it and now I'm back to the last Harry Potter and the death of president Garfield
Second Sight has good potential to become part of a great series. As a book, it felt a little rushed and in need of more story to fill in the gaps. Visions of death make Ela feel cursed and isolated until she meets Luka. Luka introduces her to a secret world of magical people and the war they wage. With a death sentence hanging over her if she fails, Ela trains to control her powers and become a warrior for the shade. A little romance and plenty of action flavor the story as Ela must decide who's really the good guys and who's not. Book two should prove interesting. My voluntary review is based upon an advanced reviewer's copy.

Gripping YA story, though the story skimmed over points or information that would have helped develop the characters and scenes more, and allow us to fully understand the magic side of things, it has great potential to be an awesome series. I love the concept and ideas of it, betrayal and loyalties tested, friendships and family killed or saved, the magic side of things are different i would have liked more depth to this side of things though hoping book 2 will shed that more for us. Though its flaws i will be looking forward to reading book 2 to find out what happens next.
This is a great book and I immediately started reading the second book. Yes there is a lot of character building which some people may find slow but I love the attention to detail and apricate the care and effort put in by the author to draw people in to her created world. Yes there is very little heat which some people may miss but it is a YA Fantasy novel so I wouldn't expect much. I am sure if the storey warrants it this will be rectified down the line. Book 2 is even better than the first with a lot more action so please persevere if for any reason you find the first book har dgoing although I don't think that this will be the case.
It took a minute for this book to grab me. Ela, the main character, was such a negative Nelly the first half of the book that I nearly stopped reading. This is definitely a battle of good versus evil. The thing is both sides are good and evil...or are they.....I am certain that this question will be explored in future books in the series. I also have a feeling that a character that was killed in this book will reappear in the future . His death just felt ......misplaced. It is worth the read if you are patient . I will read book 2 in the series. It will be my test. J
This was a good read, the concept of the story was great and I liked the characters, there were some great twists and revelations you don't see coming that kept you reading. I did feel that there wasn't a lot of depth to the characters and the surroundings weren't very descriptive which meant I didn't really connect with the book i was reading. As this is the first book I am sure things will continue to develop and more is explained so we can connect or whether characters and the work they live in.
I was given an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have read many books by this author and, this was as enjoyable as the others.
Second Sight (Hollows Ground Book 1) is different in the way it starts and the poor girl feeling that her gift is a curse. You really have to feel for her. I can't imagine what it might feel like to tough someone and know how and when they will die. Such a burden.
Is there help or a chance to learn to control these visions??
Grab this story for yourself and find out.
Well done once again J. A. Culican, I can't wait for more.
What if you could foresee death? Mirela can prophesy the death of whomever she sees... A gift... Or a weapon for the right people...or the wrong people... Who can she trust?
The pain Ela experiences breaks my heart. I feel for her - I truly do.
A war is going on but which side do you trust? Do you believe?
A highly engrossing, quick read.
Full of magic, Shades, Wraiths, pain, secrets, Gypsies, romance, loss, action, adventure and war.
Wow. I’m late on parade with this. My head is still spinning at all the action and adrenaline. This was one of the best action fantasy thrillers I have read. Ela thought she had a curse of second sight as she failed to act on her first vision. Years later she is is made aware that it’s actually a gift. I followed her enthralling journey of discovery with eager anticipation. I don’t do spoilers so I’ll just say this is such a page turner and I going to read the sequel Stolen Magic , right now . Highly recommend this to all fantasy fans.
This book is worth reading, it has suspense , action and more. Mirela has turned 13 and come into her powers. All she can see is death. Then one day she tries to save a little boy and Luka finds her. He brings her to his Group the Shades. She is told that the Wraiths are bad. She hears and see things and does not know who to believe. What will she do? Should she help the Shades and Luka? Should she run and hide again? Should she believe what Talon tells her? I received a free copy for my honest review.
An interesting YA read, it had an novel plot with the heroines discovery of her magic when she turns 13 and her ability to foresee death. It has plenty of interesting characters that develop well as the book progresses.
I gave this book 3.5 stars as I enjoyed the read, and feel that this series will get stronger as it continues and the plot lines and characters continue to develop.
I received an ARC of this book and have left an honest and independent review.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I found this book a pretty good read for the younger teen/young adults. A great story about a girl gifted with foresight (death) who ran away for 8 years only to come face to face with learning to control it. Its adventurous, entertaining, sad, has some romantic scenes which are appropriate and not overboard. Would be nice to see how the next book in the series ends
JA Culican is someone who's been on my "must read asap" list for a while now, and Second Sight did not disappoint at all. Mirela's curse-like "gift" is well portrayed and I love that, just as in real life, there often are no easy answers, no clear "good" or "bad" / "right" or "wrong" in choosing your friends, your lover's or your causes. Neatly done. Added with great characters and, as usual with this author, great writing and the result is another superb JA Culican book.
Second Sight is the first book to what I am sure is going to be a must read series for all Fantasy lovers. This story is fast paced and on the darker side which I absolutely Love!! J.A. Culican is quickly becoming a one-click Author for me!! I look forward to more of this series and from this Author. I requested an advanced review copy and voluntarily left this review.
This is book one in new series. Good fantasy with heroine who have precognition about death. Incredible story with insane imagery. Adventure, action, and plenty of magical elements to keep the reader wanting more. I am curious about what is going to happen in the next book. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
No one probably cares what "stuff" I share in my reviews. No one probably cares that I find very few books to be entertaining. I'm a voracious reader and I share my love of reading to all who will listen. This is a great book. I can't wait for the next one. Please read it, you will not be disappointed unless you are looking for more than entertainment.
