This is the first novel in a series of Cookie Club Cozy Mystery Novels.
After losing her husband, Beatrice thought her days of adventure were over, but then she meets a handsome debonair man who turns out to be a conman and murdered days later. Armed with her two quirky best friends and a sarcastic handsome police detective, Beatrice must solve the murder mystery before the crime gets too close for comfort!
Case of the Strawberry Cream Stabbing is the first of these cozy mysteries new releases.
There are absolutely no sex, gore, curse words or cliffhangers in these murder mystery books. This is an easy read about a retired school teacher and amateur sleuth who lives in a retirement community filled with colorful personalities.
If you like cats and wise-cracking parrots, you'll enjoy these cozy mysteries for kindle. Although this book is part of a cozy mystery series, it can be read as a standalone book.
Love mysteries and this was a fun, easy read. The mc is older, retired and likes solving mysteries. Her friends are warm and funny. The detective in this story is an interesting character. This is a great start to this series.
This is definitely a cozy mystery. I really enjoyed the fact that it was a more mature woman doing the investigation. And that in the course of the book she must have used her baking to bribe people into helping her along with the investigating at least 4 times. (including the recipes would be good). And that she was helped by her best friend a scatty woman in trying to prove the innocence of her other best friend who is a manizer (new word there). This was well written and kept you involved wanting to find out who had done it. I liked that the detective involved in the case was a past acquaintance of Beatrice in an unlikely way. And that there is room for this relationship to grow and develop. This reminds me in a way of Jessica Fletcher and murder she wrote in how it's written. The relationships between the characters are there ready to be developed further so I can't wait to read the next instalment I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Loved the characters in this story. They were women who were experiencing life to the fullest in their sixties . Good mystery and a little romance making it. A fun read.
I really enjoyed this mystery. It was fast paced and fun. I didn't mind that it was short. It gave us everything we needed to have a fun mystery. I liked the MC. It was nice to have one that was an older person. We don't see many of those. She was also very likable. Yet again the mystery was good. I didn't know who did it. I will have to check out the rest of the series. I just hope it stays this good.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it. The storyline kept me engaged and entertained. It was well written and I liked Beatrice. I'mean looking forward to reading more of this series. *I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my honest review.*
A perfectly good -read:decent- mystery ruined by a God-awful, heinous, horrid protagonist. For the life of me, could not stand Beatrice. She is what people are talking about when they complain about Boomers. She's basically a stereotype. She was so horrible that it was distracting.
Here's why: 1) She brags that, as a teacher, she was so great as 'shaming her students into submission.' 2) She goes into people's hotel rooms unannounced and uninvited demanding answers and outraged when they don't want to tell her their marriage and parenting history. 3) She calls the police rude when they tell her that walking around a crime scene is tampering with evidence. 4) She nonstop criticizes her 'friends' for being stupid and slutty. 5) She gets angry that her friend didn't tell her that she was dating the victim, but hadn't told anyone that she was either. 6) Apparently, any woman that isn't her who flirts is a flaunting whore. Meanwhile she turned a conversation into a date. Actually thought to herself it was date, when the guy didn't even know.
And let's talk about the guy. The cop. Gawd. He started off not liking her at all, then threatening to arrest her -both for good reason- then all of a sudden, he wants to date her????? There was no transition there. None. Just jumped.
One of the best books I have read about what the world considers to be an elderly retired school teacher. Not only is she a very astute detective but she is also a wonderful cook!
This book was a highly enjoyable light read. The widow Beatrice is a mature and adventurous woman who is helped by her crazy best friend to solve "the mystery". The books title holds true to its theme of desserts as Beatrice uses her skills at baking to bribe people into helping her with the investigation.
This book is well written, and there is a fare amount of intrigue as we hang onto the edge of our seat in preparation of things to come. I rate this book 4 1/2 intriguing stars.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked the premise of this book. The main character is a slightly older woman who enjoys her leisure time, loves baking and solving mysteries. Liked how all the aspects of her life seemed to knit together. She also has two friends who in turn manage to help her or make her life much harder. Can recommend.
This book had a lot of promise but didn't deliver. Sophie wasn't just ditzy - she shouldn't be allowed to live alone. The emotions were so dramatic as to be ridiculous.
Very enjoyable cozy murder mystery revolving around one of my favorite subjects, baking (and eating). Take 3 old friends, add one secret admirer and a cat named Sylvester. Mix thoroughly and add one murder to see what happens. You'll be glad you did!
Cover/Title: I love murder mysteries that have something to do with food. It makes me smile. Of course, that may have something to do with my husband. I love when he asks what I am reading and I give him a title like this. The look on his face is priceless and I can't help but grin sweetly at him. He actually told me once that he wasn't going to eat any dessert I made for him ever again. LOL!
Characters: I like how doggedly determined Beatrice is to help her friend. Her other friends are kinda ditsy though.
Plot: Beatrice goes all out for her date and is quite peeved when he stands her up. With her friends in tow, she is off to give him a piece of her mind. Unfortunately, she never gets the chance. It seems that somebody else had a problem with her wayward date. She is off to solve the mystery.
Overall: The characters are ok. The book is perfect for when you want a quick little cozy mystery. Will I read more of the series? I probably won't go out of my way to grab one but if it fits a Goodreads challenge, I know I can't go wrong with something by this author.
This cozy mystery reminded me of the Golden Girls with a twist of mystery; three 60+-year-old ladies (one retired school teacher, another a bit of a ditz, and the last one a sex-crazed siren). Beatrice, Sophie, and Stella get themselves in hot water when con-man (and lady's man) David ends up dead at the local church baked good auction. With so many ladies fooled by this con-man, the girls try to discover whodunnit before one of them is arrested for the crime.
Not the greatest cozy mystery that I have read, but it was witty, entertaining, and could be read in one evening.

Beatrice, former teacher and current bakery owner and caterer, is stood up by the local retirement community ladies man. After finding him as auctioneer at a church charity auction she determines to tell him off, but before she can she finds her best friend standing over his bloodied body. Her friend, Stella, also had a relationship with the man and is arrested. Beatrice determines to find the real killer. This plot was pretty simplistic and the grammar needed a good editor. Her other friend was supposed to be kind of flaky but to me was a major emergency waiting to happen. Probably will not read more in this series.
While the characters in this book seemed oddly familiar to those of a popular tv show and the book follows the rules of a cozy mystery to a T, I did enjoy this book. Beatrice was a likable character. I loved Sylvester, the cat story line and the actual mystery was interesting as well. I thought the way she went about with her baked goods was ingenious to getting to people and her army of past students a valuable asset. I'll be reading the next to see where the story line with her daughter goes.
Several things annoyed me about this book. The biggest one, which almost made me throw it away, was the MC's horrible attitude towards her friends. No wonder her daughter wanted nothing to do with her! The attitude was somewhat balanced with claims of emotional attachment later, but I certainly wouldn't read more of the series if I hadn't already acquired a bunch free. The mystery itself was mediocre and the writing was worse. Friends seem to be cardboard extremes provided only in a bad attempt at humor.
Three very different women who are best friends get caught up in a local murder. Can two friends save the third from a lifetime in prison? This was a good mystery with some funny moments and more mysterious when a cat disappears as well. Now I can't wait to see what happens in book two which I have sitting here waiting for me. I just need another cup of coffee and it will be time for a new adventure.
The first book in this series is a good beginning. Spoiler? The motive was never mentioned, or was too vague to be understood. Some of Sophie’s activities are too sad to fit with the other moods of the book. Finally, author needs a better proofreader who understands grammar. The characterization is good; the romance is what we need, and the animals are an excellent part of the story. I look forward to reading more in the series.
Beatrice has a knack for figuring who had killed a man in the church. It is fun to follow her. Jessica Lansbery also has a play on names.. It was fun to see how she use a the names of women sleuths. Very good book and I am starting Me. Manager's second book in this new series.
Beatrice is an older main character. I like she is a retired teacher and now owns a bakery. Her date stands her up, but his murdered later on. I did not think she was a good friend to het friends. The plot is simple, and it is a quick read. Ihaoown to have another one in this series, so I will read it and see how it compares to the first.
First book by this Author for me, I enjoyed reading this book, Three friends, one who is charged with murder. Beatrice must find the killer to help her friend.
Not what l thought it would be like. It was really go. Beatrice is/was not the typical character you would read about. Her and her friends are hilarious. Definitely will read the next book in this series.
Thought I would try these as there was a definite play on the Murder, She Wrote Series and the main character / amateur sleuth is a Mrs Fletcher .. groaning aside, these are three quite funny and compelling Novella's .. We follow Beatrice as gets herself into all sorts of scrapes with her two friends solving neighbourhood crimes. I really enjoyed the Series ..
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of this book. It's like a Golden Girls mystery. The story was well written, and most of the characters were well rounded. There were some bits and pieces that had too much detail, or not enough, but it was a fun read.
The book started off a little for me, so I put it down and came back to it two days later. Then I really got into. I like that the characters are older and shows how lonely it can be, but also how friends can really become family. With a mystery thrown in!
The Cookie Club is an enjoyable series, and Strawberry Cream Stabbing does not disappoint. Beatrice is a great character and her cohorts, Stella and Sophie, are colorful and fun. A quick, easy, read for leisure time.
Beatrice’s date was a no show, because he had been murder, how did a friend of her’s get accused of it. A delightful story, good characters and desserts.Given audio which I enjoyed the narration of. for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Good story although a person could figure out the mystery half way through. Three friends that are all a bit weird. Going to check out book 2. Glad they found the cat.
I liked the story okay, although the ditzy friend seemed like someone who shouldn't be living alone for her own safety. Some grammar problems that bothered me. It would probably not read the rest of the series.
