Left Behind

Rate this book
Left Behind is an action/horror story, set against the backdrop of a fictional but easily relatable modern world. Told from the perspective of the group's would-be leader, it focuses on the personal story of several friends and neighbours in a city stricken by an apocalyptic plague, turning living people into walking corpses.

The characters are savvier than the average horror movie cast, and use this genre-awareness to make plenty of commentary on Apocalyptic Fiction as their story progresses from cautious ignorance of the rising pandemic, to a desperate bid to escape their doomed city.

Alexandria Sorsby was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and put themselves on a diet of movies, television and video games, before being squeezed through a filter of music festivals. They list their favourite authors as Sir Terry Pratchett and Jim Butcher, with influences from all over sci-fi and fantasy.

Left Behind was the product of a several years of re-drafts and re-writes passed back and forth amongst friends and family. They considered publishing it on Amazon to be like kicking out a friend whose been sleeping on your sofa for years and telling them to get a job. It was never intended to become a series, but when The Suburban Dead spawned two sequels and still has plans for future stories, it was as if the sofa-surfer really turned their life around.

A fourth Suburban Dead novel and the first in a new fantasy series are in the works, and will probably be done before George R.R. Martin's next release.

Left Behind (The Suburban Dead #1)

This horror/zombie story takes place in a fictional city/country, closely resembling the UK. It’s about a group of survivors, who of course, are taken by surprise by the out-break of a zombie plague. They will face a number of challenges to overcome throughout the story. It’s not just zombies they have to worry about.

I found the characters to be very likeable, down-to-earth people. They are very easy to relate to, so I wasn’t keen for them to be eaten/turned by zombies…or get themselves killed by other hazards awaiting them within the city.

The story is told from the main character’s point of view. He is just an ordinary guy trying to keep people safe, whilst also dealing with his own personal issues. He also has a sense of humour which makes him easy to warm to.

The pace of the novel was quite good and ticked along nicely. There was plenty of time to get to know the characters as well as be immersed in the action sections of the book.

I really, really, enjoyed this debut novel. It was easy to read and entertaining. The author has done a great job on his first book and I will look forward to reading the any future instalments of this series.

I LOVED this book. It has all the elements that make a brilliant Zompoc novel. Tension, a good build up (but not too long) to the Zombie apocalypse and terrifying zombies.

Some of these zombies were not like anything I have come across in other Zompoc novels so it was great to read something different. There was a part in the book which I found terrifying....it took me two days to actually get past that part as I did not have the courage to read it at night (I do the bulk of my reading at nighttime).

I throughly recommend this book. I hope that you enjoy it too.

I really enjoyed this book. There were a few surprises with the zombies. Waiting to see how that comes about. And of course, the ending was shit. So I hope that ends differently than it appears. Already starting on book 2.

Fantastic.

I thought it was going to be a bit slow at the beginning and I'm so happy I persevered because, after a few pages, I could not put it down, it was that good. I loved all the characters and there are a few although the main man Kelly, seems to be a run-of-the-mill average guy who doesn't stand out at all and he is much more than that, he is very nice, kind-hearted, brave and feels responsible for everyone around him. He puts himself into situations that luckily he gets out of and lives to tell the tale. Following the gang is not for the faint-hearted there is a lot going on and some of it is near the knuckle but it makes for great unputdownable reading that I totally and highly recommend. I'm starting on Emergency, Book Two.

Zombie related books and movies have been around, read it, seen it. But this book with today's COVID spread, it's just way beyond creepy. The closest I've had to reading an Edgar Allen Poe book when I was ten. It starts spreading quickly, the fight for survival is on. And it is literally a fight, against other survivors, the walking mutating dead, only to have to kill those you love. I can't explain enough how this story is so well written it gets into those small parts of the readers brain. The part that makes you dream, or flinch when a noise surprises you, that makes you think about what you would do in this situation. Just shudders and chill bumps

Left Behind does a great job of putting you in the beginning times of an apocalyptic misadventure. The author brings forwards the every day Joes fears and weaknesses through out the novel. As I read on, I wasn't sure how it would end, because you know, when you start an apocalypse it can't really end until the world ends right? But this book ends perfectly. With it being listed as a #1 I am excited to see where the author takes the story.

Left Behind left me wanting to read more by Sorsby. Characters were relatable and sympathetic. Knowing that everyone has to serve in their national service made the fact that the majority of the characters could shoot even a little more believable. The trials they go through are realistic. I even enjoyed the variety of zeds they came across. I really found myself hoping that certain people were found and that the main core made it to a safe zone. Overall this book was a really good read.

Awesome read!

When I started reading this...it sounded very much like the pandemic we are all going through. Kinda scary how real this seemed at that moment. Despite a few grammatical errors, I give 5 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I am so looking forward to more from this author. Thanks for the chills. If this genre is up your alley, you have to read this story. This author has a way of drawing you further into the story.

Great zombie story, characters were likeable and relatable. The writer took normal people and put them in a zombie book, obviously they had to step up to the circumstances and this made for a great read.

Just too slow.

I tried a couple of times to finish this book and unfortunately for me it was, as I said in the title, just too slow. I became bored.

A zombie book that isn’t a Walking Dead clone or survivalists wet dream. Great read with believable characters and situations.
