Sam Wylde #2

Nobody Gets Hurt

Rate this book
‘Tell Mum I miss her.’

Bodyguard Sam Wylde has had her British licence revoked. She is now operating in Europe, running security on a swanky motor yacht during the Historic Grand Prix race. And at the same time she trawls for news of her ex-husband and daughter.

In fact, the owner of the boat is bankrupt and the bank wants the multi-million dollar vessel back. Sam is in the middle of a very dangerous situation that is rapidly escalating out of control.

Nobody Gets Hurt continues the action-packed pace of Safe From Harm as Sam Wylde has to fight enemies on all sides, as well as try to find her daughter. It’s about the loss of loved ones and the urge for revenge, something that both Sam and her partnerKonrad have in common. Although, despite that bond, they will find themselves on opposite sides when it comes to the final showdown.

Nobody Gets Hurt. If only that were true.

This is the second in the Sam Wylde series, but the first for me. The title is rather ironic, as things go to hell in a handcart in this fast paced, action packed, thrill ride of a story. Sam is a close protection officer who no longer has the option of working in Britain, so is based in Europe. In her past, she was in the military in Iraq. She is tracking her ex-husband, Konrad, and her daughter, whom she hope to connect with. She is running security on a luxury yacht during the historic Grand Prix race. However, things are not as they seem, as financial bankruptcy looms. This leads to Sam operating as a driver on a trip to visit a banker where they are unexpectedly joined by the son of Mrs Irwin. However, almost immediately things begin to fall apart and spiral out of control as Sam finds herself surrounded by enemies and wondering who she can trust in a tale of loss and revenge. It all leads to a tense finale that challenges Sam to the limit. This is for those who like entertaining action based thrillers. Many thanks to Simon and Schuster for an ARC.

Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster UK for this arc.

My various kindles keep dying on me and while I've gotten new kindles, I haven't got them very well organized and as a result, this read slipped through the cracks on me. Apologies for taking so long to read and post this review.

This was a fun and fast paced read for me. Sam is a PPO (personal protection operator... not to be confused with a BG / bodyguard) for hire, meaning she can't be too picky who she works for/with if the money's right. So it's no real surprise she finds herself up to her armpits in alligators. And stinking rich alligators at that. Sam, being the "kick-ass" and resourceful gal she is takes on all comers and comes out on top. I kept hearing Glenn Frey's The Heat Is On" in my head while reading this one. There are a couple (or three) different story lines going on is this book, just to keep the pace at breakneck.

This started off with so much promise. The cover does say "R J Bailey has created a serial hero to rival Jack Reacher" That's fighting talk to my ears! Well, Sam Wylde certainly has a lot of Reacher's talents but for me she... yes, she...lacked his charisma.

I liked the plot line with its twists & action scenes but the parts...* spoiler alert coming up* ...
where Sam realises she had been drugged left me annoyed, frustrated & also, I have to say disappointed because I neither liked nor believed in how Sam was portrayed in this part. Why? Well, Sam, along with another PPO named Konrad are looking after a rich woman & her son Myles. Sam wakes up to find herself naked, no memory of the previous nights events & the woman & Konrad have vanished. Sam doesn't know if she was raped while drugged, & guess what? It just so happens that rich kid Myles has been accused of rape in the past...resulting in a big thing being made of her wearing only a towel in the presence of a rapist & I didn't like the atmosphere created in this episode. Things weren't helped when it's stressed that the makeshift outfit she adapts lacks knickers, oh & then it rips which sees her boobs hanging out. What exactly did this add to the story? Nothing that's what! It all came over cheap, tacky & rather pathetic to me & what's more did not fit in with the persona of Sam that had been established up to this point, well not to my mind.

This, however, seemed merely a blip as I still found it an action packed entertaining enough tale. I liked hearing Jess' story in the form of her diary & it moved along nicely until the final chapter. Now here comes another * spoiler* but I have to say that Henri's death took things into absurd territory. His body falls from a plane, landing near Sam & co. Really?! Too unbelievable for me I'm afraid....

Overall a good read but let down by one or two moments which either lacked credibility or were rather ridiculous.

Fast-moving thriller

Sam Wylde has lost her licence to operate. As a result, she has to take any jobs she can. She needs the money not only to keep body and soul together but also to finance the search for her daughter, Jess.

Although the opening episode has nothing to do with the rest of the book and what follows, it perfectly sets the scene as to the world in which Sam operates and how she operates. It’s a world which is fast-paced and in which it’s always a good idea to constantly assess who you can trust. It changes from day to day.

This novel is the second in the Sam Wylde series. Whilst it would be better to have read “Safe From Harm” first, I hadn’t, but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment. In fact, I devoured the book in just a couple of sittings.

Sam sets out to safely transport a wealthy client across France with the help of Konrad, of whom we know very little. Her task is complicated from the very start by the inclusion of a second client without her knowledge and then gets even more convoluted as the story unfolds. The reader may be confused by the Irish prologue but bear with it as everything will become clear.

It is unusual to find a female character as the main protagonist. Apart from that this thriller is very much like any other. That’s not at all a criticism as this genre invariably follows a similar path – it’s how it gets there which determines whether the story is a good one or not – and this one is a good one. The dialogue is sharp and to the point. The characters are well fleshed out and believable and the action is non-stop. What’s not to like?

Here’s to the next in the series. Go get ‘em Sam!

Thank you to the publishers for providing an ARC of the book through NetGalley.

The more I read about Sam Wylde, the more I love her.

I loved this book. In the aftermath of book one, Sam has been searching incessantly for her daughter, which remains a major point of the book. I found Jess much more interesting in this book than the previous, especially as there were chapters written from her point of view, letting us know what she's doing while Sam is working her protection. I thought that Sam's protection storyline was also pretty interesting, and I didn't see the plot twist coming at all. I'm also starting to really like Freddie. When there was the possibility that she died, I felt like the books had lost something.

Sam Wylde is a Close Protection Officer who provides security for the rich and the powerful. She needs the money to search for her ex-husband and daughter so she takes up the job to be Ms. Irwins's driver and the plot thickens...
This is an action packed thriller where things start going wrong for Sam from the get-go till she is suspicious about everyone.
Sam realises that the only person she can trust is herself and she depends on her own intelligence to get through to the end of the story.
On the whole a fast paced, action thriller where the twists are aplenty..

Nobody gets hurt by rj Bailey.
Sam Wylde is a Close Protection Officer to the rich and powerful.
In a world dominated by men, being a woman has been an advantage. And she is the best in the business at what she does. But has she taken on a case too dangerous to survive?
This was a really good read with good characters. I liked Sam. She was my favourite character. Really enjoyed this book. 5*. Netgalley and Simon and schuster UK fiction.

Sam Wylde is a close protection officer. She served in Iraq in the military and has medic experience. She has personal problems which she has to put away in a box in her mind when she is on a job. Sam has taken this job so she has the money to look for her daughter who was taken by her ex-husband. She is to be the driver for Mrs Irwin with another to do the actual protection part. Mrs Irwin has shown up with her son who was not expected. They are driving across Europe to see the banker for Mrs. Irwin. Things start going wrong from the time they pick up the car. Sam does not know who to trust. Great read that moves along fast and has surprises you did not see coming.

A very easy read. One of the quotes in the front cover is from established author Tony Parsons who refers to the lead character as a female Jack Reacher. This is a very lazy comparison; just because she’s no nonsense and knows her way around a fight and justice, she must be like Jack Reacher. I actually think that does a disservice to Sam Wylde who, for me, is a very compelling character in her own right.

The comparison to Jack Reacher makes more sense in the context that the last few Reacher stories have been a paint by numbers version of action story telling. The same applies here. We don’t believe for one moment that this story will end in any way other than it does.

Some of the intrigue and the mystery is lost and not built upon so this book and story is just ok. However, it’s a very easy book to read and it did grab my attention, where I would like to read the next.

Sometimes we need characters like Wylde, or Reacher, or even Eddie Chase form the Wilde and Chase series. After all, who doesn’t like a good action hero!

A bodyguard gets involved in complex web of double crosses.

The first chapter was really good but then the plot went in about ten different direction and the character interactions varied from page to page, so it ended up being a bit of a mess.

A fairly easy read, with some clever twists in the plot. The main character, Sam, seemed well-developed and believable. Would be interested to read more by this author.

Thoroughly competent, well-written thriller. Sufficiently engaging for me to want to read the final book in the trilogy. (Which needs to be read in order.)

Nobody Gets Hurt by R J Bailey
The second book in “The Sam Wylde Thriller” series. I highly recommend reading “Safe from Harm” the first in the series. I do not know and to my knowledge am not related to R.J.Bailey, but I would sure like to meet Sam. I do realize she is a fictious character but could be based on a person, perhaps even the author. Make no bones about it, there are some tough women in this world who I can admire for their capabilities, every bit equal to their male counterparts. The character, Sam, is a veteran and in my mind anyone who served in the armed forces deserves great respect. It is her role in civilian life that creates the plot, a fast-moving plot with all the reality if not normality of civilian life. A mother, a wife twice and currently a divorced widow, with a young daughter. Offering her services as a personal body guard by any other name is still a body guard and she relies on her military training and experience as well as that of her former fellow combatant. Without giving away any of the story I can only state this is five-star read, happening in the UK but sans the overuse of the Brit slang which at times leaves me bewildered. There is a significant dose of humor, but that may depend on the readers’ viewpoint.
