Alfie Trotter is no ordinary boy. He can do things other children can’t. He can turn the telly over just by thinking it. He can make lights flicker on and off when he gets angry. He can make objects disappear, never to be seen again. He has no idea why he’s able to do such things. Then, one day, a boy from Alfie’s school notices him doing something amazing (jumping a ridiculous distance on his bike). He tells Alfie that he’s a wizard. Before long, Alfie finds himself enrolling at the Pendred Academy of Magic. Whist there, he learns of a plot by an evil wizard to steal a powerful wand, which is being stored in a safe at the academy. He also finds out that the academy grounds serve as a portal: a gateway to another world. And that’s when the real adventure begins …

Feels Like Magic by Paul Johnson Jovanovic is all about a troublemaker named Alfie Trotter. Alfie is a very gifted boy, he can do things others can't. That is why he goes to the Pendred Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While eavesdropping on his teacher he hears about the something he is not suppose to know, as it is a threat to his safety. He wants to learn what it is even when that means getting in trouble. There is word that the mysterious object is going to be ambushed. The only thing is that he can't tell anyone. Now he knows that he is in too deep to back out. What Alfie is prepared to do to save it is out of this world. Paul Johnson Jovanovic teaches his readers to use their talents for good by showing us through Alfies admirable choices to fight in what he believes in. If you like Harry Potter you will enjoy Feels Like Magic as both stories follow the wonderful story of learning through trial and air.
This book was a cute book, a great alternative for children. I had this book in middle school and while going through my TBR List, decided to pick it up for a good read. Now I admit, as an adult, this might be a huge contributer to my 2 star rating, as this book is for 9-12 year olds, but when reading this book, I couldn't help but feel I was reading a rip off version of Harry Potter from the characters to the plot line, with of course major differences here and there.
As a Harry Potter fan when I was a kid, I couldn't help but keep comparing the two and finding similarities between the two books. Alfie is Harry Potter, prodding his nose into dangerous situations where he ends up saving the school, Melanie is Hermione Granger, trying to keep Alfie out of trouble and being a book nerd, Charlie is the Hagrid who knows a lot and forces himself to stay quiet, Pendred is Hogwarts, it's like a rip off of Harry Potter, which makes sense s it feels like a Harry Potter made for kids, as Harry Potter as a series becomes more open for higher age levels the further you get. I will not be looking into this series, but it is a great book for young children who love magic and reading.
