An ordinary day in the life of Scott Keen suddenly turns tactical as the laws of physics are rewritten to force the world to adhere to an apocalyptic change in the very nature of existence. Those who manage to survive the first day of the new world must survive in the wake of a new reality, life lived as a turn-based tactical role playing game. Feel the horror, and revel in the humor, as battles take place one turn at a time. Can one man survive a world gone tactical? Will he ever understand the need for background music and strange announcer voices? It's your turn... to find out!
An awesome Tactical LitRPG that delivers a fresh approach
Generally speaking, this is much like most of Scottie's books. MC works hard, gets his ass best regularly, and becomes pretty awesome. I expect it, I like it, and it's something I always enjoy in his books.
What makes this one unique is the combat system. It's a system we're all familiar with from games, but not one one ever encountered in a book. It was refreshing and I really enjoyed the horror twist to his usual writing.
I've read all books in the Scott universe and have enjoyed every. Single. One I love this book in particular for its trademark unique humor and very well thought out character interactions and fight scenes both of which are far to rare lately especially the ladder I can't wait to read the next book by Scottie Fitch. Literally any new entry in any of the many series is something I look forward too
In the beginning I bought this book because a few people on facebook recommended it and I kept this book in my library for months without touching it. The moment I started it I was interested. Plot: The Earth has changed due to an unknown incident into a tactical RPG. If those of you are familiar with the Fallout and Wasteland series you know basically the rules. Meaning turn based fighting. This is a survival story. Scott has to fight for everything while trying to learn the new rules of his apocalyptic world filled with evolving monsters and cut scenes. Characters: The main character is Scott. A down on his luck average guy who just got dumped by his girlfriend and the universe seems to want to screw over.
The fights, while they drag on for a paragraph too long are decent, the characters are relatable and fun, and there is a mystery hanging in the air on how this happened. I am looking forward to the next book.
Tactical, turn-based, survival horror dating sim. Oh and LitRPG. (Meaning the literary usage of game like stats and mechanics within the story to progress the plotline and/or serve as the foundation of the setting.) Looking forward to more of this insanity (hey if the main character can use the word to describe himself and the situation of the world who am I to try to describe it any other way). It's too bad though about the Siren/mermaid, seems like a nice enough gal, other than the whole wanting to drown the guy. And the creepy not-sure-if-its-innuendo-or-literal/gonna-eat-you "I want you inside me" statements. Probably just a difference in cultures though right? Right? Ok maybe not, but less creepy than the Raider's "Mama" sounds, especially taking that mad clown of hers into consideration.
who would have thought that i could like a setting like this. The beginning really reads like a typical zombie apocalypse. Suddenly the world changes and the MC sees himself attacked by zombies. Interesting is that a) it is litrpg so the MC gains levels, b) it is turn based. That is a novum - cannot remember to have read a turn based combat description before. Later on the MC finds other humans and even a few allies. Not bad - really not bad. Lots of combat, some cool loot, the sentient enemies are interesting too. Good description of entitled humans - annoying like in real life.
MC has a tremendously large chip on his shoulder and the whole book is seemingly written to give him opportunitues where everyone (often the police) is being ludicrously stupid or bull headed so he can wave his big cock around and solve the problem in a macho way. At one point he essentially does solve a problem by waving his big cock around in I assume accidental irony.
I really enjoyed the story and diverse characters. Each one, for good or bad, has their own motivations and conflicts. The strategy-based combat system is very nice. Keeps battles fresh and interesting with every new encounter.
I cannot wait for the follow-up to this first volume!
This book is based on turn based mechanics and significant proportion of combat. Turn based in games is slow and unsurprisingly slow in this book. I also hate combat in these books and enjoy the character, skill, and town development more. I thought the book was written well but it just has too much of what I don’t enjoy.
Great world building, author is pretty entertaining. Sex scene ruins the book, along with all of the drama at the end. Just kill everyone and be done with it, ending of the book felt half assed.
The genre is fast becoming saturated, so the turn-by-turn nature of things was a welcome change. I can't say I was overly impressed, but equally there was nothing off-putting.
Scott keen is probably the single greatest MC in a litrpg book. The turn based system took a little time to get used to but Scottie Futch crafts the battles in a masterful and entertaining way. And like usual with his books there were a lot of laughs to be had. 5/5 loli robot girls, would ride again.
