With trouble at home, Noel decides to take off for the weekend. With nothing more than his backpack, Noel hikes up into the mountains and comes across two grizzly bears. But they are no ordinary grizzlies--the bears shift into gorgeous men. But Noel has eyes for only one of them and gives into his desires when Bobby Ray seduces him right there on the path. Noel is enchanted with Bobby Ray, until he realizes this isn't some fantasy and he's stepped into some strange world fraught with danger. Bobby Ray claims Noel on the spot and takes him home. But life on the mountain isn't easy, and keeping Noel safe proves challenging, especially when it's Noel's brother who tries to kill Bobby Ray. Worse yet, there's a nomad on the loose, and tension rises between the bears and wolves. But Bobby Ray is determined to prove to Noel that their love for one another can pull them through anything standing in their way.
[Siren The Lynn Hagen ManLove Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, shape-shifters, M/M, HEA]
Lynn Hagen loves writing about the somewhat flawed, but lovable. She also loves a hero who can see past all the rough edges to find the shining diamond of a beautiful heart.
You can find her on any given day curled up with her laptop and a cup of hot java, letting the next set of characters tell their story.
This began as non consensual then became drug induced consensual. Human Noel was not told nor given a choice by Shifter Bear Bobby Ray. Bobby Ray found Noel in the woods, determined that he was his mate, and suddenly bit him. Noel went into heat. Bobby Ray then had sex with him. (In Book 1, Clint at least took Dane home to have sex.) Poor Noel got pregnant immediately and went out of heat. In fact, Dane was quite proud that Noel got knocked up the first time.
Noel was working in a clinic and had aspirations to become a physician before his brother stole his college fund. Like Dane in Book 1, Noel lost all personal drive to return to civilization. He become very complacent and docile.
Bobby Ray and Noel had a very boring relationship. The sex was very rushed compared to Book 1.
Like Book 1, the majority of the plot centered around a crazy family member and this time it was Noel's sadistic brother. And just like Clint, Noel had to make a life or death decision.
The book ended abruptly and, unlike Book 1, didn't include Noel's labor and delivery.
Rating: 2 stars I really can’t explain why I like this series other than it’s mindless entertainment. I thought overall the story was okay. I thought some of the brother’s reactions were a bit over the top and the whole get off my land scenario got a bit annoying. What really upset me though was the scene at the end where Noel said he didn’t want to have sex and Bobby Ray pretty much ignored his wishes and strong armed him to have it anyway. That bothered me. A lot. It was like he didn’t care whether or not Noel was in the mood, he had to have his own way and that just wasn’t right. I don’t care if someone is your mate, you should respect their wishes. (I’m lowering my rating as I write this because it bothers more the more I think about it.) Hopefully the next one in the series is better.
I know it could be dicey at the beginning of these with consent issues... but I'm more lenient with shifter mating.. I actually have an issue AT THE END of this one surrounding consent. Pressuring a pregnant mate into sex was not cool. And it is all in the presentation. So perhaps they 'do this' a lot but that's NOT how its given to us.
So, Noel runs a few times... for different reasons. That.... is annoying. Like, once ok.. but to keep him doing the same thing is a lack of originality in the same story! Am I being harsh? Yes I am, I am feeling mean at the moment so that is going to be the cornerstone of my review. But I could totally do much harsher if I felt up to it.
I kind of want to reach the point where one of the other shifter groups start their series... Please, we all KNOW its gonna go that way.. its like, irresistible to just give it up at the one group.. I can hear EXPANSION EXPANSION EXPANSION like a drum in my head. If so, I think the first book of 'A' spin off series will let me know if it will be worth it or if they all do mating the same way... bite first explain later, knock up mate immediately caveman style... Did I mention I was feeling a little mean?
The second book in the Grizzly Ridge is meant to have many moments of levity, but surprisingly it was actually more violent than Book One. If you ever watched the TV series OUTSIDERS you'll have an idea of what I mean. The life on the mountains can be festive & fun or cruel & dangerous. But town life can be just as unhappy. Grizzly Ridge Humans have their own share of domestic / family issues. It's not a thriving community financially since the oil strike by the Rising ancestors dried up.
Criminal activity and behaviors that hit larger cities are present in smaller communities including the presence of guns, gambling problems, and easy money through theft and robbery. The tendency of big brothers to smack around younger brothers is once again visited.
The propensity of Grizzly Bear shifters to lose control of their Human side once their mate is scented and go in immediately for claiming bite, has been demonstrated, yet the Rising brothers are surprised when it happens. Lynn Hagen comes up with different locations for the Bear brothers to find their mates. This time it's in the woods.
Despite how upset Noel is about his big brother, he doesn't want him hurt. In spite of how many times Noel is hurt by his own flesh and blood. He has a tendency to run away to escape when things get too crazy or stressful. A hike, a walk in the woods, a stroll in the mountains. Unfortunately those acts aren't as innocent as they seem. Lost on a hike Noel is told by a Human / Grizzly Bear that they are "mates". Trying to go warn / talk to someone - sneaking out to do it. Attempting to help his mate. All seem so innocuous, but they each have dire consequences.
This book brings you more into the lives of the Rising brothers and the culture of the mountain shifters (townspeople & shifters). And it ain't all pretty. Sure there are babbling brooks, bunnies, and gorgeous foliage, but there are also killer Mountain Lions, a rogue Wolf shifter, Snow Leopards, Wolves, and of course Bears. Then there is the small town hospitality, but in it's underbelly there is complacency regarding the domestic abuse between brothers.
These first two books highlight and contrast horrible & great relationships between brothers. How family is supposed to be accepting of each others foibles / idiosyncray, not malicious, vicious, & abusive. Brotherly love is a definite theme. And there is another mpreg & a cute Bear cub from the first brother & his mate named King. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Bobby Ray gets his mate, Noel, and it was an enjoyable read, however, there were some frustrating moments as well. Noel had a selfish, abusive brother who undoubtedly becomes a threat to Bobby Ray, his brothers, and especially to Noel. I found Noel aggravating every time he kept trying to sneak away for one reason or another. It was cute when he so boldly bopped Bobby Ray on the head (while in his angry bear form), and scolded him. That was so precious. I do wish that all of the animal packs on the mountain got along, since they all share a common threat in the form of evil humans, rogues, nomads, etc. I love the witty banter between Bobby Ray and Noel, and even the brothers. The story was excellent, and was a captivating bed time escape. :)
Bobby Ray benar-benar orangnya easy going, koplak malah...! Sedangkan Noel orangnya ceroboh banget, bikin keputusan bodoh yg hampir berakibat fatal. 1 kali masih dimaafkan tp ini bikin berkali-kali, parah! Anehnya Bobby Ray selalu maafin, heran.
Le pongo 4 solo porque me gustó ver qué Bobby Ray tuvo su final feliz. Desde el primer libro me encantó este personaje y solo quería verlo sonreír más.
Again nice short read....I liked Bobby Ray and by the end Noel had grown in me...still I think the animosity with the other shifters is annoying and doesn't make since...it seems like in both books they should work together on the threats instead of always talking about going to war with each other... But I'm still invested off to book 3
