What if Jane Austen’s most notorious character, Lady Susan Vernon, paid a special visit to Lady Catherine de Bourgh at her grand estate of Rosings Park? Her arrival inadvertently occurs right after Elizabeth Bennet has rejected Mr. Darcy’s botched proposal, and the saddened gentleman catches the eye of London’s most infamous flirt. The fun begins as Lady Susan plots to sever Darcy from Elizabeth, and claim him for herself. We all know she can’t possibly win his heart, but it is a bit of a giggle to watch her try.
This is a full-length, humorous, Regency novel with a sprinkling of angst. Another feel good read. I hope you enjoy it!

“Barbara Silkstone is beyond clever. She's an engaging writer who, with great skill, manages to make her skewed world ring true. The best thing about her characters is that they are not caricatures; they are real with all their dimensions intact. The best thing about Silkstone is that she manages to exhibit equal measures of talent and imagination.”

This is such a delicious mash-up of characters and stories! Lady Susan Vernon finds her way to Rosings after having been booted from Langford by Mrs. Mainwaring for carrying on an affair with her husband. Sir Lewis de Bourgh was uncle to Lady Susan's late husband, so Lady Catherine feels obligated to allow the widow entry despite her scandalous reputation. She tries to get her two nephews to leave before the black widow arrives, but both are intrigued and eager to meet the lady. Besides, Darcy has written but still hasn't had an opportunity to deliver his letter to Elizabeth.
Naturally, Lady Susan decides to leap on this unexpected opportunity to snare a rich and handsome husband. Darcy's initial lack of interest only strengthens her resolve; Lady Susan does love a challenge. She learns of his interest in Elizabeth Bennet and decides to befriend the young lady in order to further her own scheme. This leaves Elizabeth struggling with lies confided to her by this Wickham-like character. Will she once again think the worst of Mr. Darcy?
This is a fast-paced tale. Darcy, Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam do their best to bring order to the chaos that blows into Rosings following Lady Susan's arrival. By the book's end, Mr. Bingley, Caroline Bingley, Georgiana Darcy, Frederica Vernon, Mr. Mainwaring, and Sir James Martin have all found their way there. Lady Catherine is seriously displeased at all these guests showing up uninvited! Her method of coping with the disruptions to her usually ordered world leaves her vulnerable to Lady Susan's machinations.
It's worth noting that the editing is excellent. I didn't spot a single grammar or spelling error. The writing style is more formal than I'm used to from Ms. Silkstone, but I think this is the first of hers I've read set in the Recency era. It flows nicely and fits the setting. You still can't miss the author's lively sense of the ridiculous, which shines through. A Rosings dinner party where everyone very stealthily tries to observe everyone else is particularly clever.
Lady Susan's character here may be more obvious and not as cunning as Jane Austen's creation, but it works in the context of this plot. Otherwise, characters are generally consistent with canon. (Ms. Silkstone copies Tom Bennett's delightfully idiotic interpretation of Sir James.)
The story is not one to take seriously. As long as you're not a stickler for believable Recency behavior, you should find this as entertaining as I did. Even if you've never read Lady Susan or seen the movie version (curiously titled Love & Friendship), I believe you'd enjoy it, though I would recommend both for maximum appreciation. It's more important to be knowledgeable about the plot of Pride and Prejudice
Lady Susan was even more outrageous in this story than in canon or in the movie, Love and Friendship. You do have to give her credit for being a master of manipulation using half-truths, some outright lies and/or innuendos to her own end.
In this tale she shows up at Rosings the same day that Lady C. has received a letter from the Lady announcing her intention to visit...claiming a distant relationship. Lady Catherine knows the Lady's reputation and (to her credit) attempts to send her two nephews off to save them from any interaction with that "lady".
Meanwhile, as in canon, Darcy has proposed and been rejected by Elizabeth. His response/explanation letter has been written but not delivered to Elizabeth. Now just guess who sneaks into his room looking for any kind of information which might be used? Susan has decided Darcy will do just fine as she needs a rich husband to support her affair with Mainwaring.
You will find yourself just shaking your head as one thing after another happens in this fast paced story of stealth and romance. Caroline Bingley plays a part. Lady's Susan's daughter, Frederica, shows up along with her new friend, Georgiana. AND Mariah Lucas nearly dies. I was surprised that Lady Catherine did not in fact die as she kept gulping down laudanum. Elizabeth has to sort out information she has been given: both by Darcy and by Lady Susan along with her own observations.
This was an interesting tale. I would say knowing Lady Susan's part in JA's work and in the movie had me predisposed to suspect anything she did or said. I enjoyed this story.
I enjoyed Lady Susan's scheming, and the dynamics between her and Lady Catherine's was very funny. Darcy and colonel Fitzwilliam made a great team against both conniving ladies machinations. Of course D&E had their share of misunderstandings, but they het their HEA.
I highly recommend listening to the audiobook version. So much fun.
Darcy can into trouble all on his own with Lizzy Bennet, but then toss in a cunning manipulator like Lady Susan Vernon and Rosings hosts enough madcap mayhem to send Lady Catherine to her bed in need of laudanum.
This mash-up of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice with Lady Susan was entertaining from first to last. Both books were strongly showcased in characters and situations though it restricted the events to scenes at Rosings Park. The comedy and shenanigans was off the hook and I thoroughly enjoyed the tale the author spun as Darcy avoided the machinations of Lady C on behalf of her daughter, Lady Susan, and Miss Bingley while attempting to salvage the disastrous proposal and his chances with Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth, for her part, has to smart under the scathing and wrongful tirade she delivered Darcy while being manipulated by Lady Susan who she suspects of the such.
Each new arrival to the house just adds to the fun of it all and turned it into quite a riot. I had no idea what twist would come next.
Love Austen and want a good time? Give this one a go.
I bought this book because the premise of Lady Susan Vernon arriving at Rosings and meeting Mr Darcy sounds so appealing that I couldn't resist it. The book starts with Lizzy's refusal of Mr Darcy's proposal, and his writing her the letter. I found this part a little tedious, but that may be because I've read "Pride and Prejudice" so many times that I almost have it memorised word by word. And then Lady Susan invites herself into Rosings after being sent off Mrs Mainwaring's house. Obviously, as soon as Lady Susan sees Mr Darcy, she tries to seduce him, using not only her charm but also some evil arts. I really liked this part, though I'd have liked her to cause more "damage" between Darcy and Lizzy because, in the end, it felt a little too "light" and easily solved. That may be me and my love for a good angsty story, though. Anyway, this was fun. I give it 3,5 stars.
In this P&P variation, the Hunsford proposal has just occurred. But for Lady Catherine the problems are just starting as she receives her first uninvited guest and in this case unwanted. For Lady Susan Vernon has invited herself to Rosings Park. An enjoyable story with the usual happier endings, though it would have been fun for Darcy to end up with Lady Susan.
This Pride and Prejudice and Lady Susan variation begins right after Darcy's disastrous Hunsford proposal. He walks away from the parsonage with Lizzy's words ringing in his ears, still reeling at her refusal. At Rosings, a distressed Lady Catherine informs Darcy that she has an unwelcome visitor arriving that day, her distant relation Lady Susan. Knowing that Lady Susan is an infamous flirt and worse, Lady Catherine tells her nephews to leave immediately. To her dismay, Col Fitzwilliam is intrigued by the lady's description, and Darcy is determined to get a letter into Lizzy's hands the next morning.
Lady Susan arrives, and it's just as Lady Catherine feared. She instantly fixates on Darcy, and wedding plans are made in that moment. Luckily Darcy only has eyes for Lizzy, and when he and Lizzy are thrown together after she receives his letter, she begins to warm up to him too. But Lady Susan still has plenty of tricks up her sleeve!
This mashup was just so much fun! I'm ashamed to say I've never read Lady Susan, but you don't need to read Austen's story to follow this plot. Lady Catherine, fountain of wisdom and knowledge that she is, fills us in on Lady Susan's past. I absolutely loved the sparring and maneuvering between the two characters. Devious Lady Susan with her rapier-like wit, and Lady Catherine with all the subtlety of a battleaxe. The author actually had me rooting for Lady Catherine of all people!
This book is equal parts humor, angst, and romance. Lizzy and Darcy get plenty of sweet moments of their own, with one of my favorite Austen characters arriving later to join in. Lizzy gets to see Darcy at his best as he stands up for the women in his care.
Jannie Meisberger did a great job as narrator, her delivery added even more to the humor in the story. Her character voices were well done and easily recognizable. I received a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I hope Barbara Silkstone continues to write these magical little mashups, and that Jannie Meisberger continues to narrate them!
I only recently read "Pride and Prejudice" although I am 60 years old and wish I had read it years ago. That being said, I enjoyed this variation a lot. Even if the listener/reader hadn't read P&P, it was still a great romp through Regency England.
The author, Lady Barbara Silkstone, does the original book justice in this outing. The story picks up where the original ended and answers a lot of questions that readers have at the end of the classic. Will Elizabeth and Darcy ever get together? Will Jane Bennett and her beau be wed? What ever became of Lady Susan?
Lady Susan is a notorious widow, making quick work of any available man she can find. When she arrives unexpectedly at Rosings, Lady Katherine de Bourge is taken aback at her temerity and vows to keep Lady Susan away from her nephews.
There is plenty of fun for lovers of the Regency genre, with misunderstandings, back-stabbing, conniving women, men without a clue, younger siblings and cousins and horrid elderly relatives. One of my favorite things in the Regency genre is the humor caused by the pomposity of the times, the misunderstandings that ensue due to the decorum, and the HEA that always occurs. If you loved Pride and Prejudice, you should enjoy this book. It does nothing to detract from Jane Austen's classic tale and enhances it for those who want to know more.
The narrator did an excellent job and added a lot to my enjoyment of this audiobook.
The review is for the audiobook version of the novel:
It's a book that should appeal to anyone who likes the world of Jane Austen's novels:) It deviates from the original "Pride and Prejudice" plot more than "Darcy, Lizzy and Emma" did, but it still is the Jane Austen characters and places we like so much... There are a lot of intrigues here, the pace is quite fast with the storyline allowing for some real surprises and twists, and there is also an element of humour which adds a little spice to the mix:) I would definitely recommend it to my friends...:)
I loved Ms Meisberger's performance, it's another wonderful interpretation of a book by her...:) I like the way she reads female characters - I think this is her strongest point:) - and the acting skills that she adds to her interpretation. The male characters are also convincing and don't sound pompous or ridiculous as it may happen when a narrator deals with characters of the opposite sex... The pace of Ms Meisberger's reading is good and the emotions ring true. Definitely one of my favourite narrators:)
(I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.)
I'm not ordinarily a reader of Regency romances, but I received this audiobook as a gift (with no obligation to review it). I've read and enjoyed Pride and Prejudice multiple times, so I'm familiar with the plot, characters, and writing style, all of which Barbara Silkstone captures wonderfully. Lady Susan was new to me. Her insertion into the already complicated scene at Rosings, followed by her daughter, the daughter's idiot suitor, and LS's co-conspirator, was a hoot. The happy ending for Lizzie and Darcy came as no surprise, of course. The outcomes for the daughter, the idiot, and Lady Anne were the cherries (not to be confused with red berries) on the cake. The narration was top-notch, too.
EB refused FD, then lady Susan came to Rosings. Lady Susan set her caps on FD. She read his letter to EB and used that to discredit FD in the eyes of EB. She also almost suceeded in overtaking Rosings as Lady C was ill.
Love the story. I was impressed on the turn of the story. Impressed with Lady Susan's quick thinking as well as (ingenuous) deceitful and cunning ways to get what she wants. Above all, love FD's devotion to all. Though it was a short time and because of all the events that happened, FD and EB resolved their differences without leaving Rosings.
This was a fun read that I probably enjoyed more than I should. It is not to be taken too seriously. I was in the mood for something light & this one hit the spot. It had me laughing several times. The notoriously seductive Lady Susan Vernon shows up at Rosings on the heels of Darcy’s disastrous proposal and quickly marks Darcy for her next target. In order to achieve success, she first has to neutralize Elizabeth Bennet, but for a woman that is skilled in the art of manipulation this should be an easy task or does she underestimate the country girl with the fine eyes?!?
This book was a fun, fantastic intertwining of two Austen books and characters. I really enjoyed how they were woven together staying true to Jane's developed characters.
Audiobook Review Narrator:Jannie+Meisberger Love all these Pride & Prejudice variations, so much fun to listen. Janine was absolutely brilliant, always a joy listening to her in her element.
