Don wants to pursue a career in Voice Acting and has been training himself. He's even developed some feminine character voices. What not even his closest friends or Dad know is: the latest feminine voice is destined for higher purpose. Opportunity and one strange chance change his life forever. Not all things in the night go 'bump'. Sometimes you find a voice of light, when you change your dial!
Once again, headed for 5 stars, then she runs out of gas in the home stretch ... damn, and the first 80% was SO great !
I hate writing these reviews for Snowfall's books but they all have the same fault (at least to this old lady's sensibility) ... she either gets bored with the story or runs out of gas or something. But 3 transgender books with amazing first 80%s will keep me coming back again & again in the hope that someday she'll finally hit her masterpiece. Even with only 80% at a 5 star level her books are sooo worth the read. Come on, we're routing for you Alecia !
Yes, this story had its difficult and challenging moments, but its characters were ones I wanted to read about. Many people weren't pleased as Don became Dawn and in changing she helped to teach many others to become better people. All three of Alecia Snowfall's books so far have been really good reads.
I normally don’t write reviews, but with this book, I had to. To put it simply, I had a LOT of trouble putting this book down, I literally had to force myself to stop to sleep and eat... And I confess, it’s the first time a book has recommended an anime to me *grin*
This is another excellent book I have read all three of her books and this is one of the best. I found myself drawn into the book I highly recommend this book
I very much enjoyed this story. It was well written and kept me turning the electronic pages. I wish real justice was just as swift and sure. I also wish that schools were funded better so that they can deal with bullies and keep the students safe from the most common threat many of them face.
I remember one out queer person at my high school. Bravest person I ever saw. Challenged gender stereotypes with their clothing. He was also beat up frequently by the jocks. The school never did anything about it. The girls tried to intervene and protect them with varying degrees of success. This was the early 90s. I got the message loud and clear. Everyone hated us and turned a blind eye. I never got to know them, I was too scared that my secret would be discovered. I also had my parents abusing me for being trans… I had my own share of bullying. People sensed that something was off with me no matter how hard I tried to hide it. It’s hard pretending to be a boy, it’s like they’re speaking full blown Scottish dialect with an accent so thick it’s incomprehensible. It sounds like you should understand it but nothing makes sense to you. That doesn’t even cover the pain of never being allowed to be yourself. Or the pain of dysphoria or the horror of testosterone poisoning for trans femmes or estrogen poisoning for trans mascs.
I think this story would have been even better had the author explored the internal side of the protagonist more given how complex the internal landscape is for us, unlearning our defenses and the AGAB societal programming. The sheer joy of finally getting to be yourself fully and completely. That joy because even larger with the support of family and friends. There’s a reason 1 out of every 2 trans kids contemplate suicide in unsupportive families. Too many carry through. Please, if you have a trans child, love them unconditionally, accept them, and support them fully. They desperately need it. This is an incredibly difficult condition to have and the kids desperately need their family’s love and support.
Trans people are always trans, from birth. No one decides to become trans. They do decide when to come out usually because hiding becomes intolerable. Given the complexity of embryonic and fetal development and all the ways it goes wrong, it amazes me how many people can’t grasp the concept that the brain develops as one sex and the body as the another. It’s no more contagious than asthma or diabetes is. You can’t make a kid be trans if they aren’t. No one would choose this if they could.
Maybe someday people will understand it and not let religion and bigotry muck everything up. Being trans is hard, the world is making it that much harder. I’m amazed so many of us manage to survive to adulthood. By all rights I know I shouldn’t have.
One final thought about the psychologist in the story. I find her very suspect. Psychosis involving gender are quite rare, but over half of the trans kids she’s treated had that instead?! Not buying. There’s a great deal of gate keeping going on with her and if you don’t fit her perfect idea of how a trans person should look or act then she tells you no you have a psychosis?! That’s some serious BS there. The thing that needs to happen is meet the patient where they are at and understand how long they they’ve dealt with this and/or how serious and determined they are. We are now in WPATH Standards of Care 8. It is an informed consent model a harm reduction model and I can count on one hand the number of countries where that’s followed.
Sonny Crockett becomes Dawn with all the troubles it entails. He gets a job cleaning at a radio station . He makes extra money doing voices for some commercials. When a night personal leaves them in the lurch Sonny becomes Dawn and works his shift. She becomes one of their best personalities. She must deal with attacks, but with her friends she wins through. Even the last attack that all most kills her. It is so nice to read a book where the transgendered person has friends and help to stand with her. Please read this and really enjoy the story.
Great story. I loved how Ren was automatically protective of Dawn! It would have been nice to have fallowed all through High School and College. My only complaints are that it feels wrong to me that Americans use British slang. If I could I would hire Ms Snow a better proof reader. I saw a lot of little typos, like in when on was the word that should have been used. A couple of word order issues, like "Singray Corvette" should always be written "Corvette Stingray"
I have read this book again after a couple of years and Dawn's story is just a wonderful, being an older transgender woman I can relate to many of the problems she goes though in her head. Also it is a sad fact that transgender people have to deal with all the hate and discrimination how Dawn and the people close to her is simply wonderful Dream Sweet and enjoy this book
Unlimited Kindle borrow. Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. A high school boy develops many feminine talents. The book has many lifetime-suggested life lessons. The MC treatment of two friends was extremely harsh and was a downfall as it could have resulted in suicide or one of them 'going postal'. Lots of the creative character dialogs, and internal dialogs are fun as well. A long story of life and struggles of one who rises above the hate ...
I loved everything about this story. It felt so real. Most stories carry you through the moments, this one allows you to live the moments. I was able to visualize everything in this story. This is normally only something I do with my favorite books or authors. Alicia has now become one of them.
Wow , the best I have read yet hope to see more books from Alecia Stone
Very well written and believable. I have no doubt his book will help many find their way in life.. Great story, Really liked the ending because it didn't leave an unfinished story
I recently reviewed another of Alecia's books and complained about the editing. No such problem here. This time the editing matches the story which produces a lovely read. As with Frills there is lots of happy times mixed in with some very dark times. This book is well worth a read.
What a superb story of transition. Very sensitively written. Lovely characters. So much detail about running a small radio station and handling harassment and violence. A very happy ending.
I like the way Alecia built her charactes, especially Dawn, the main character. I gave 4 stars because of some minor grammar and word usage errors. It actually should be 4.5.
2nd book I've read and very much enjoyed by this author. I'm thinking she is easily in the top 5 of the transgender storytellers. I'm looking forward to reading much more of Alecia Snowfall's excellent writing.
This is the 2nd story I've had the pleasure, frills was the first I've read frills a few times hope above all hope she continues to post I'll be following hopefully she'll do more. Thank you .
I've read this book quite a few times since I bought it not long after it first came out. It is a fun story. Yes it is a bit of a fairy tail and life is way more harsh but to be honest, sometimes it is nice to have a super happy ending.
I was so excited when I saw that Alecia Snowfall had released a new book! I couldn't stop reading. The characters were captivating and nuanced, the plot was well done, the ending was happy, and the dark parts where sufficiently countered with comedy, wit, and love.
