Finding True Magic: Transpersonal Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy/NLP

Rate this book
Finding True Magic is the primary training text for the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP Certification Program offered by the Institute for Therapeutic Learning. Finding True Magic and the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP trainings are appropriate for laypeople seeking personal growth, as well as for therapists and other professionals intent on advancing their therapeutic skills. In fact, about 50 per cent of ITL students take the training primarily for personal development. This book explores the possibilities for recognizing and freeing ourselves from a destructive process of perceiving, thinking, and acting that can be viewed as a pernicious worldwide epidemic. Unlike other diseases, which we strive to isolate and cure, this insidious fever has a characteristic that makes us blind to its we come to identify its symptoms as our very own true self. We lovingly speak of this disease as our ego, our sense of limited separate selfhood. Jack Elias calls it "egoic-minding," because it is a process, not a thing. Egoic-minding is a fragmented, biased way of perceiving and thinking. It can be viewed as a sort of destructive hypnotic trance that causes us to experience each other as strangers, as different, as threats. The delirium of this trance causes us to do violence to each other and to our world, without ever recognizing that it (our egoic thought process) is the true enemy. By synthesizing insights and techniques of Eastern and Western philosophy and psychology, Finding True Magic explores various ways to disperse the feverish trance of egoic-minding, heal the trauma it causes, and wake us up to the sacred magic of our true Self. This true inner Self is the wellspring of our capacity for cooperation, community-building, and the celebration of life. Everyone has the right to the make use of the essential insights and dynamics of healing communication, without resorting to the long-term expense of a professional intermediary. The model of such therapeutic relationships has changed in recent years, due to the financial burdens it places on our medical system. Financial considerations aside, however, therapy and therapists should change simply because there is a more effective approach to healing and personal growth. That approach, which is the subject of this book, relies on the inherent goodness of our shared Being, a resource that is surprisingly easy to contact in the space between egoic thoughts. Most of us do not experience that space in the normal course of our thinking, however. We may be surprised to hear such a thing, given our experience of the seemingly impenetrable stream of our thoughts. But this space is quite real. It is the space of Silence, Healing Power, and Insight. We have all experienced this silence on occasion, perhaps through prayer, or in a tender moment of love or awe. Most of us have not been taught, and have remained unaware that this silent Presence is always so close and available. Holistic mind/body therapeutic techniques, such as those presented here, derive transformative power when they help us to tap into this willing Presence, also called Grace.

There is no book that covers the topics of both Neuro Linguistic Programming or Hypnotherapy which comes near the thoroughness as well as the quality of this one. If Transpersonal Hypnotherapy is your specific interest, then this (I believe) will be the most helpful book you've ever read (and re-read!). The content is by no means limited to Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP though. It brings forth great insight, based on Jack Elias's three decades of experience and study, on both Hypnosis and NLP. Furthermore, it provides the sort of guidance for effective, perceptive, and mutualistic therapeutic intervention which is much-needed in today's society of DSMs and insurance codes. Elias sees patients/clients as people who are fundamentally of the very same nature as the therapist. You will find much more than a guide on how to practice and implement tools/techniques with clients, you will find new personal insights and ways of responding (joyfully) with the world. The Buddhist teachings found in this book are non-secular in nature and are truly universal understandings that the greatest spiritual teachers have conveyed to the world for centuries. I would also highly recommend the audio programs as, if this book catches you like it did me, the training materials found on Jack Elias' website: www.findingtruemagic.com. I was certified in Hypnotherapy and NLP prior to reading this book, but when I did I knew I had found what I had been looking for all along during my studies. I happened to meet Jack on an NLP forum and was further impressed by our correspondence. Within months, I was studying with him in person and my approach and efficacy in working with people will never be the same (and neither will my outlook on life).

If you have an interest in personal growth, and tools for said, this is one of the most powerful books you can own. It integrates a deep and compelling spiritual perspective with practical application of self-hypnosis and NLP. Spending time with it again during covid quarantine. Powerful self-discovery/self-rememberance tool. Also a great philosophy read.

Excellent overview of the history of hypnosis, as well as the definitive text on Transpersonal Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy NLP, as taught by Jack Elias, CHT at the Institute for Therapeutic Learning and at other accredited schools and universities. The author, a master hypnotherapist since 1988, shares his own hypnosis scripts in this brilliant book that looks deeply into the "true magic" that gives hypnosis and hypnotherapy their reputation for near-miraculous positive results. Superb index! Great resources at the author's site, FindingTrueMagic.com.

I’d give this book 3.5 stars! I think the content is deserving of 5 stars. I love the notion that we are all hypnotized and in a trance state because of our conditioning. It makes such sense that the language we use to speak and think then reinforces whatever trance state we’re in.

He says hypnotization is more about becoming “un-hypnotized” (for a lack of better words) and waking up. It’s about becoming aware of ourselves, patterns, and limiting beliefs. It’s also about allowing ourselves and things to be just as they are.

His spin on hypnosis, calling it transpersonal, I also love. Recognizing and honoring the light with in as well as some greater power. Very fascinating stuff!

The thing I was bummed out about was the editing and organization of the content. All of the information is interwoven with hypnotherapy scripts, and for someone wanting a clear overview, I would have preferred the information have all been together in the beginning and the scripts afterwards.

There is also lots of bolding and italicizing and the formatting feels off. This book is used as a text book in conjunction to his online training (which I did not take), so it may be perfectly organized to be used in that fashion as opposed to being read by a non-student.

Interesting read if you dig for the kernels of wisdom!

Fantastic book on Hypnosis and relating it to the five Skhandas of Buddhism. I've had a session with the author Jack and he is a remarkable man to say the least. Modern energy healing is Theatrics (this is a great realization and tool for healing. Read it form the context of his book )! I saw the thematic framework that he presented in the book implemented into his session and I must say that it was highly effective for me. Jack practices serious Vajrayana esoteric Buddhism (Tibetan from seeing his tapestries) which allows him to illustrate away more deeply on hypnotism, the illusion of Maya, and using hypnosis as a therapeutic agent to relieve suffering in the world. He has more resources on his website if this work inspires you
