Think space is complicated?
You're right.
Think all aliens are evil?
They're not ... but it only takes one. Dark Landing hums, a cocoon of harmony in the cold vacuum of space. The only excitement occurs at the Saturday night poker games. That's the way Drew Cutter likes it. Chief of Security in charge of the farthest trading post from any planet, Earth or alien-he's living his dream. (So, he wrestles with an overwhelming fear of space ... he's dealing.) Drew thinks he's met the consummate bluffer when Letty Taleen arrives on the station.

Head of the largest conglomerate in the known universe, Letty Taleen receives a message from her father, missing for several weeks, ordering her to travel to Dark Landing. Within days of her arrival, the station sustains an airlock explosion, an inexplicable security breach, and a grisly murder.

Drew and Letty must solve the smaller mysteries to reveal a bigger threat.

Robin Praytor spent her corporate days drafting legal documents and creating training materials. To distract from the deadlines and to-do lists that kept her awake at night, she invented complex and quirky stories that demanded written versions. Thus, her debut novel, TRANSMUTED (a KindleScout winner), finally saw daylight, to be followed by MASS PRIMARY, the second book in the Dark Landing science fiction series.

Managing Editor of Post-To-Print Publishers, Robin splits her time between her publishing duties and writing. Post-To-Print Publishers released their first book, FROM A CAT'S VIEW, at the end of 2018, and FROM A CAT'S VIEW VOL. II in October 2019. Each anthology volume contains 18 mixed-genre stories written by the cats who lived them (with the assistance of some very talented authors).

A Michigan native, Robin now lives in Phoenix, Arizona, with her patient and long-suffering husband. She is a card-carrying geek and Comicon aficionado, with a penchant for science fiction and the paranormal.

Alien infiltration mystery (spoilers)

This is the first part of an alien infiltration mystery. Dark Landing is a remote space port of about 5000. It is run by a security officer, a doctor, and a technical administrator. We will follow the security officer as he meets the young woman in charge of one of the biggest conglomerates in the multi world alliance and together they investigate the death of the man who raised her as they uncover an alien penetration. This book doesn't really resolve, although this episode does. The girl doesn't end up with the guy, their relationship left nebulous, the alien invasion is stopped, but not conquered. No real heroes in this book. Just flawed people doing the best they can with what they have. Both our hero and heroine are left at the end of this book in crisis as to who they are and how their lives should play out. It was interesting with good world building, but none of the characters felt exceptional me. I liked them OK, but never became deeply invested in them.

This book for me was a good read. A murder mystery in space; at a space station. Then it turned in to an alien invasion but we never learned much at all about the invaders. Most things were believable as science fiction, except that a man could go disconnect the mechanism that held open a worm hole. The book did not end right for me because the issue of the aliens was never addressed except to close the wormhole. There was no clear explanation of how that completely stopped the invasion. So while I liked the book it left me with a few questions about what next. I guess the what next will be in the next book.

The world of Dark Landing is well-defined, and not so complex that you can't understand what the author is talking about. The characters are quirky and funny. You wouldn't expect the "hero" of a sci-fi story to have a fear of space, but this one does and makes it all the more endearing. Side characters are engaging, as well. But, what's up with that pigeon? The plot has its highs and lows, but for the most part flows along at a steady pace.

This is totally worth your time. There's a new universe to explore here, kind of like Babylon 5 or The Expanse. A good combination of far-future tech and realistic space concerns. Characters that you care about, moving through a plot that's complex and not ridiculous. A little space combat, rendered more realistic than video-gamey. I was happy to discover this book and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Well worth the read

That was my final conclusion. There were a couple of times I considered putting it down, because I thought there was some unseemly 'telegraphing' of coming events, but each time I was wrong. And the denouement was a total and complete surprise! I am eagerly awaiting book two.

Great sci fi thriller

Transmuted straddles the line of horror sci fi with a nightmare invasion force and a high body count. But the characters are fascinating and flawed, the story is compelling, and the worldbuilding is believable. I'm looking forward to book 2 and Preston's dilemma.

Clever

I can't remember any story where what seemed like the main character rides off into the sunset. So to speak.
Lots of potential for world building. I'm interested to see how things turn out.
Dialogue is not particularly clever although it's passable.
Future uncertain.

Enjoyable Space Sci Fi

I found this an enjoyable story. Enough that I'm writing a review. Most I don't! Please read. It is worth it.

This is the fist book from Robin Praytor, published via Amazon Kindle Scout. Drew Cutter is head of security on Dark Landing, the furthest outpost in the known universe. he is happy with his lot, but that is about to change. His well run station is about to be plunged into a war with a new alien race and the distraction that is Letty Taleen. This is a good first book and the series has potential, with some good characters. The slight disappoint is with the direction the lead character took in the final third of the book.

Transmuted (Dark Landing Series) by Robin Praytor is a great who-done-it sci-fi. It had so many twists and turns I never saw coming. Great story and wonderful characters. Sneaky plot perfect for a mystery! Loved it!

The love story (If you could call it that) was not the greatest. It added nothing and could have been cut and had no impact on the story. Otherwise, a super enjoyable read, with some neat twists and turns.

Darn good space opera. Mystery with enough action for the ones than need the pew pew. I especially liked all the flawed characters and sometimes ambiguous morals on small matters.

Excellent first novel!

The author clearly knows how to break out a compelling detective novel; using a space station as a backdrop keeps it fresh. The characters have enough depth to be instantly likable, and the universe is simultaneously surprising and familiar. The next book in this series is sure to be a page-turner!
