Dash of Darcy and Companions Collection #5

Not an Heiress: A Sequel to Discovering Mr. Darcy

Rate this book
She's not an heiress. He's not a parson. But each is exactly what the other desires.

Richard Fitzwilliam has always planned on marrying for money. What second son of an earl would not? How else was he supposed to keep to a standard of living with which he had grown accustomed? Besides, love in marriage was a happy coincidence for those not born to a title or money, was it not?

Mary Bennet has always longed for a quiet, home of her own -- preferably a parsonage. She has studied and prepared herself accordingly -- pouring over her books of sermons. She is determined to be well-versed on how best to aid ladies, young and old alike, with whatever guidance they seek.

However, when Richard meets Mary, all previous notions are turned on end. Will prudence and propriety prevail or will lessons be learned that no book can teach? And what is a poor second son to do when the one luxury he cannot do without is not an heiress?

Not an Heiress is the sequel to Discovering Mr. Darcy and part of Leenie Brown's Dash of Darcy Companions collection of Pride and Prejudice inspired novellas. If you like well-written, fast-paced, sweet and flirty regency romps, then you will love this story of compromise and the discovery that true happiness is not always found in lofty goals but in having your true love at your side.

So, pour a cup of tea, grab your copy of Not an Heiress, and escape into a world of sweet romantic indulgence today.

Leenie Brown has always been a girl with an active imagination, which, while growing up, was both an asset, providing many hours of fun as she played out stories, and a liability, when her older sister and aunt would tell her frightening tales.  At one time, they had her convinced Dracula lived in the trunk at the end of the bed she slept in when visiting her grandparents!

Although it has been years since she cowered in her bed in her grandparents’ basement, she still has an imagination which occasionally runs away with her, and she feeds it now as she did then ─ by reading!

Her heroes, when growing up, were authors, and the worlds they painted with words were (and still are) her favourite playgrounds!   Now, as an adult, she spends much of her time in the Regency world, playing with the characters from her favourite Jane Austen novels and those of her own creation.

When she is not traipsing down a trail in an attempt to keep up with her imagination, Leenie resides in the beautiful province of Nova Scotia with her two sons and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley, and Edmund with a healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tilney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).

I do enjoy a Pride and Prejudice sequel that brings a romance for Colonel Fitzwilliam and Mary Bennet so it was an easy choice for me to pick up this quick, light matchmaking romance for this pair.

Not an Heiress begins with Lady Catherine conspiring with Thomas Bennet to set up a match between her nephew and his oldest unmarried daughter. The plan is kept vague, but it unfolds quickly once she has the two people visiting her Rosings estate at the same time.

Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam fell for the quiet, serious Bennet sister while spending time with her. He loves that she wants to help people, but that is also why she wants to marry a man of the church. While he, on the other hand, must find an heiress to support his dream of making change through political reform. The pair of them agonize over not being what the other wants and trying to settle for other choices. That is until Lady C takes a hand...

Not an Heiress was light and entertaining. One is left in little doubt and matters advanced quickly. I saw that it was a companion story in the Dash of Darcy series, but didn't realize it was so strongly connected. I would definitely recommend to others to take these stories in order to get the best effect since it was obvious this one was following up on previous stories. That said, I had no trouble following along and enjoying what I got.

All in all, it was the light, quick read I was looking for in a P&P sequel variation and can recommend it to others who want something of the same.

“Poor the man who has earned millions and millions of rupees but has never tasted the meaning of true love.” Avijeet Das

This short story is a sequel to ‘Discovering Mr. Darcy’ and does OK as a stand-alone; however, it will leave the reader asking questions if they have not read the previous book. I don’t think enough explanation was given to make a smooth transition from one book to the other. Just a bit more time was needed to fill the reader in on a few things that happened in the previous book. Several things were explained but someone might be in the dark on what was going on and why certain things were what they were.

This is basically Mary’s story in finding a love match. She was asked to stay with Lady Catherine at Rosings and M/M Darcy and M/M Bingley were on their way with their children for a house party. Our dear Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam was also there and more people would arrive in a few days [M/M Bennet and L&L Fitzwilliam]. This very different Lady Catherine continued the same activities that she perpetrated in the previous book. Many things that happened in that book were referenced by the characters in this story. That’s why I suggest reading the previous book. One item, in particular, Lady Catherine’s character was OOC [out of character] and she certainly showed herself in the last book. That behavior would need to be explained.

I love having a HEA for our dear Mary. This was a cute story as her situation changed drastically from the last book. Man, this was so cool. I loved it.

Rating: PG-13: implied sex; not explained; however, you knew what they were doing, had done, or were going to do.

This is part of Leenie Brown’s Dash of Darcy and Companions series.

Book 1: Finally Mrs. Darcy: stand-alone [5-years after P&P]
Book 2: Waking to Mr. Darcy: stand-alone
Book 3: Duo bundle of Books 1 & 2
Book 4: A Very Mary Christmas: a sequel to book 2
Book 5: Discovering Mr. Darcy: stand-alone
Book 6: Not an Heiress: a sequel to book 5

This is a delightful story centering on the relationship that emerges between Mary Bennet and Colonel Fitzwilliam. You'll enjoy counting the number of times the phrase "not an heiress" pops up throughout the pages, so the name definitely fits. As the second son of an Earl, everyone knows the good Colonel must marry an heiress. You may correctly assume "not an heiress" applies to Mary. Meanwhile, she believes she is destined to be the wife of a parson, and Colonel Fitzwilliam certainly isn't a man of the cloth.

Elizabeth and Darcy have secondary but significant roles, as does Mr. Bennet. Lady Catherine gets an unusual characterization here. She's still manipulative and haughty, but she doesn't have a malevolent streak. She sincerely wants the people she cares about to be happy, and she employs high-handed methods in full expectation of those results.

Great story!

This story ended at 88% on my Kindle and then we have an excerpt of another story.

In this story which is a sequel (and there are hints that the story of Darcy and Elizabeth evolved differently in that previous book) Lady Catherine is surprisingly in charge of arranging her nephew's life...that is the Colonel, Richard Fitzwilliam. And she does it all ahead of time bringing her plans to Mr. Bennet's attention and getting his approval.

Richard wants to run for a seat in parliament but for that he needs financial backing and so continues to look for an heiress. He acknowledges to himself (and others eventually) that he is comparing all the ladies he meets to Mary. Lady Catherine arranges a compromise (as she apparently did for Darcy and Elizabeth) but both Richard and Mary must decide if being forced to wed because of this situation either of them will resent their spouse in the future...especially as for Richard as this means he can't have a say in government where he hoped to make a difference to those he sees in needs. And even though Mary keeps reassuring him that she will not change her mind after she accepts his offer Richard knows she wants what she thinks is most important to him.

This story's Lady Catherine is OOC. She does not put her plans for Anne first. In fact, she sees that the future for Rosings does not lie with Anne.

There is an epilogue in which we are introduced to some offspring of various family members. This was a sweet story but predictable. I did like descriptions of how the children's personalities were handled at the end.

This is a re-read, again, of a Pride and Prejudice sequel where Colonel Fitzwilliam needs an heiress to enter politics. Mary Bennet wants to marry a parson so that she can help the poor. Lady Catherine has her scheme to playout. Can it bring happiness to two of the people she cares about.
Was there anything to dislike - only that it was too short.
A well-written story about my two favourite characters from P&P

The library.

Lady Catherine is at it again, playing matchmaker.

A very fun story to read. By the end Mary is reading fewer sermons. :)

This was a great continuation of Discovering Mr. Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Novella and I loved seeing how Lady Catherine arranged things to get Mary and Richard together. Elizabeth and Darcy's son Alexander was also really cute and I loved the few scenes he was in. I look forward to reading more of Leenie Browns books in the future and hope she has some more with a Lady Catherine like this.

technically somewhere between 3 and 4 stars but I do love that the author consistently writes pretty fun stories for Mary.

much more OOC than most of her other Mary stories that i've read but I love that she has it that Mary's always been Richard's draw, that she's first choice for him, that he would choose her over ambition.

This is a short story, part of the “Dash of Darcy and Companions” Collection. It follows after “Discovering Mr Darcy” and has Mary and the Colonel as main characters. Lady Catherine invites Mary to stay with her after Lizzy and Darcy marry (and also Anne and her love), to " introduce her to prospective gentlemen and find her a husband" but she has already found the perfect match for Mary, although not obvious.
Mary is quite unaware that her deepest secrets and dreams are known by Lady Catherine, and so Lady C becomes an unexpected ally to Mary's happiness.
Colonel Fitwilliam has been trying to find an heiress to marry but he has such a perfect model in his mind (a quite unexpected one) that none of the ladies he is acquainted with meet his expectations, so he keeps on searching in vain, but Lady C knows better and invites him to Rosings, while Mary is present.
Lady C is at it again, trying to fix Mary and Colonel Fitzwilliam’s future as well as she thinks is right, and she manages a compromise similar to Lizzy's and Darcy's in his bedroom, but this time in the library, with unexpectedly naughty consequences (sexy times but nothing explicit). Who thought that quiet Mary would be such a passionate woman and quite the right match for the Colonel?

Anyway, short and very very sweet. Some naughty times but not explicit. I really loved this story; I love stories that pair the Colonel with Mary. I think she deserves better than to stay at home or marry Mr Collins for sure.
I won’t spoil it anymore. Just to say, if you like Mary to marry a nice, sweet and handsome gentleman, and if you like the Colonel finding a match that’s so good for him and “not an heiress” this is the story for you! 5 stars, highly recommended!!!

This is one of my absolute favourite Mary Bennet stories - I have been rereading it at least once a month for six years so cannot understand why I have never reviewed it. Better late than never, I suppose.

The book is not absolutely perfect from my perspective. It is a novella and I feel it would have benefited greatly from being expanded to a full length novel, meaning things would not have to move so fast and Mary and the Colonel may not have behaved in what was a somewhat inappropriate way for the Regency period. I also don't care for the epilogue - it seems not to fit with the rest of the story and emphasises the fact that the story does not have time to grow. It just ends too soon.

But neither of these issues are really important in the final analysis. The story benefits from Ms Brown's trademark gentle wit and is quite charming. Whatever the circumstances you get a real sense of the love between Mary and Richard and it also reveals a reason for him to need to marry an heiress that doesn't make him look something of a fortune hunter (sorry, that is and always has been my opinion on the original. Just MHO, obviously, put the pitchforks down).

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, it always leaves me with a smile on my face

I read this novella as a standalone, but I think it might have been better to read it in order with the series, since a lot of the relationship building between Mary and Richard was done in the previous book.

This book felt a little bit modern masquerading as Regency fiction. I don't mind a softer Lady Catherine playing matchmaker, but I struggle to suspend my disbelief enough to think that she would purposely manufacture such a compromising situation for anyone she genuinely cared about.

Also, while it was nice to see that Richard was *ahem* passionate about his engagement to Mary, and I can even see how the scene in the library might have ended the way that it did, I don't see any well-bred gentleman thinking an intimate encounter next to a footpath was a wise idea.

This was a short, low angst Pride and Prejudice variation that exists solely to give Mary and Richard their happily ever after. It was a pleasant enough way to spend a couple of hours on a cold winter's evening.

I truly enjoy variations of Pride and Prejudice. This one was exceptional.
It's the story of Col. Fitzwilliam and Mary. While they love each other, as Mary is not an heiress, neither think that a marriage will work as Fitzwilliam has goals for himself. Thank goodness for Lady Catherine. When she comes up with a plan to ensure a match, she does not allow anything to stop her! She will make you smile.
I highly recommend this sweet and adorable book.
I received an ARC of this book. The choice to read and review was all mine.

Who Needs an Heiress?

I love this version of Lady Catherine. She is so scheming and naughty but so loving at the same time. It is such a great sequel to Discovering Mr. Darcy. Tlhe story of Mary and Colonel Fitzwilliam is so good and sweet.

You should read Discovering Mr. Darcy first to understand the depths Lady Catherine will go to to aid her relative in seeking love matches.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Mary Bennet find love then you should check this one out. It’s a cute story about Mary and Col. Fitzwilliam as they try to fight their attraction and act according to what they think the other wants. Lady Catherine is scheming in a good way. Elizabeth, Darcy, Bingley and Jane all make an appearance. These Dash of Darcy novellas are a great way to spend the afternoon with my favorite characters.

I find I love a slightly naughty Mary, and Fitzwilliam is very close to canon with a lovely touch of mischief added. Again I really adore this LCdB, she has become my favourite out of all the variations I’ve read.

My Rating: 3.5*

As the title states, this is a sequel to 'Discovering Mr. Darcy' and it is strongly recommended you read it first to truly enjoy the machinations of Lady Catherine de Bourgh!

Now that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are happily married, Lady Catherine has set her sights on Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam and Mary Bennet! Surprisingly, she has a co-conspirator, but one who hates to leave his own library...Mr. Bennet.

"A sparkle of amusement shone in Mr. Bennet's eyes. She had hoped his wish to be amused by the folly of others might assist her in her scheme, and it appeared it would." (quote from the book)

This is a short but sweet story about Mary and Richard fighting against their own inclinations. I found the pace of the story just a bit too fast, but it is a novella.

"In her opinion, poetry did nothing to secure the mind in the realities of propriety. In fact, lately, it had done the exact opposite." (quote from the book)

We definitely get to see a new side to Mary that doesn't involve sermons! And we get to see a softer side to the Colonel.

Mary and the Colonel!

I am a fan of secondary character stories and Leenie Brown creates some of the best. This is a fast and wonderful romance for the Colonel and the oft overlooked Mary. It must be said that I just love this Lady Catherine. LOL Bravo Leenie, great book!
