A girl with her whole life ahead of her. A terrible accident. An inspiring story of triumph over trauma.
Aged 15, Jordan was a happy-go-lucky girl; having fun with friends and loving life. In one fateful moment, everything changed. A car accident left her paralysed from the chest down and shocked her into deep depression. She was on the brink of giving up. But gradually Jordan realised there is hope beyond utter devastation, and life beyond disability.
Painstakingly re-learning how to apply her beloved make-up, Jordan began to rebuild her sense of self and empowerment. Her body may have been broken but her spirit was not. She is now a successful beauty blogger and her journey of positivity inspires millions around the world.
MY BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE is the incredible true story of how one young woman overcame immense challenges, of inner strength that lies beneath outer beauty, of how to believe in yourself and find the light when it feels like all hope is gone.
This book came recommeded to me, I hadn't heard of Jordan Bone before. At the age of 15, she was involoved in a car accident and suffered life-changing injuries. Her memoir tells of her journey to where she is now, and she is by no means back to how she was before. Her world was turned upside down after the accident, and the way she has coped and adpated is an inspiration to anyone. She is so positive.
Jordan has a blog and youtube videos, so, by reading her story, I was interested to check some of these out where she demonstrates how she does various things-I won't say what so as not to give anything away.
I enjoyed reading this-it was incredibly uplifting, to say how for her things would never be the same again. I liked how she used the chapter themes to tie in with her life now. It was a bit repetitive at times, but a very good read. She reminded me a bit of Katie Piper-and with her youtube videos-vlogs, I think she would be a good TV presenter. Perhaps she does this now? I don't know, but, I can imagine this for her in the future. She seems a lovely lady and her story is well worth reading.
I've been following Jordan on YouTube since Ashton Kutcher posted about her "My Beautiful Struggle" video and I watched it and found myself welling up watching it. I've been an avid fan since then and felt like a proud mother when she announced she was releasing a book.
I devoured this in a few hours, and probably could have read it faster if it wasn't for general life interruptions. Reading the details of the car crash and how she has come out the other side and come to terms with her disability was truly inspirational.
I think the prologue by her mum had me in tears before I even got to Jordan's part, and it was heartbreaking reading her Mum's words. I would have liked to have seen something about Mike (her fiancé) experiences but he comes across as quite shy when he does feature on her YouTube channel.
The only thing I did miss from the book were photos, but I can completely understand why Jordan maybe didn't want to include before and after shots or any time she was in hospital. Plus she does share a lot of photos on her Instagram, plus her videos on YouTube. So if you know where to look, you'll find them easily enough.
Definitely a must read book, whether you watch Jordan's channel, or have you just picked up this book blindly.
This an inspiring book about a young teenage girl, Jordan Bone, who at the age of 15 was involved in an horrific car crash that changed her life.
This book tells Jordan's story, how she realised that her injuries were so serious that she was lucky to be alive. We read how despite being a quadriplegic, Jordan's strength, courage and her positive outlook enabled her to overcome the situation she found herself in. She refused to let her disability prevent her doing the one thing she enjoyed above all others - applying her make up. Despite her hands being stuck in a fixed position after the accident, Jordan has been able to teach herself how to hold a make up brush, mascara wand and apply foundation, eye make up and lipstick.
This remarkable lady then set up a blog showing people how to apply makeup and to encourage others to stay positive and not to give up on whatever their predicament. Twelve years on, Jordan is enjoying the fruits of her labour. She has thousands of followers on You Tube, has been on TV and is engaged to Mike who is completely devoted to her.
Despite being a little repetitive in parts, this is a lovely book which shows that in the face of adversity, you can succeed. Jordan Bone is definitely living proof of this.
I started watching Jordan on Youtube after her Video 'My Beautiful Struggle'. At that point, I was bored with 'perfect' YouTubers who would all be the same and I enjoyed Jordan's uniqueness. When I saw that she had also written a book I bought it immediately (but didn't read it until now). When it comes to biographies or personal stories in general, I always think the only right rating is five stars. This is someone else's life and we can't give a negative rating just because we don't like what happened. But even if this would be a fictional book, I would still give it five stars. It was very real, very honest and in the end, I was inspired to really live my life. The beauty aspect was great because it is a big part of Jordan and her story, just not what interests me too much. But the talk about Make-up application is little and didn't bother me. I can only recommend her book!
Truly inspiring Incredible story, told in such a lovely way. I think she shares an important message about disability - which is that it is possible to still have an incredible life, to go after your dreams and ultimately be yourself (speaking as person with a physical disability) this is what makes her story all the more inspirational. She's a beauty blogger who happens to have a disability and isn't afraid to talk about it and share what it's really like, instead of an inspiring person with a disability, the distinction is what makes her truly inspirational in my eyes because she's opening up paths for others like her and paving the way for people to truly understand life with a disability, well-done.
Inspiring and vivacious.... these are just a few words to sum up what I think about this lady. A perfect read for someone who is struggling in their life who needs uplifting, going through a dark time, needing motivated, wanting to be inspired, this is the book to read. This book has helped me in so many ways. We all have our struggles, challenges, why me moments. Life is hard! But Jordan's positivity is just beautiful and magical. 'If you believe, you will achieve! Because if you don't believe in yourself, who will?' 'Life is too short to be unhappy' Jordan Bone. Thank you Jordan. My Beautiful Struggle will hold a special place in my heart.
Very much a spin off from Jordan's you tube channel but no less effective and relevant. Written in a simple relaxed manner which could only be achieved by a non-writer the story of Jordan's progress since her accident is moving and, at times, inspirational (I did get a little tired of being reminded she was being inspirational rather than just letting her experience and fortitude do the inspiring) I loved her enthusiasm for make up but sort of skipped the mechanics of it as I'm not big on make up usage
My Beautiful Struggle by Jordan Bone was such an eye opening book for me. She is such a brave and inspirational person to have been through so much and come out so strong and so determined. I started watching her videos a while ago and when I found out she’d written a book I had to buy it and read it. She speaks so passionately about staying positive when things are hard and she is living proof that no matter what, nothing can define you. it’s important to fight for what you believe in!! Such an inspiration.
This book is as incredible as it's author...what a woman! I am truly amazed at her strength and determination to not give up, to keep fighting no matter what the set back. I feel empowered and inspired by this book. Jordan talks about her struggles and how we all have our own battles but if she can work through things then so can we. Thank you Jordan, this book was a real achievement, well done xxx
A truly wonderful story which is so well wrote. You feel like your part of the book and it's very inspiring. I hope to try and keep going looking forward :)
This is the kind of book I wish I'd had in my teens and 20s. Although I was born with my quadriplegia and Jordan got her condition in an accident, I think the struggle to define ourselves as women in conjunction with our physical circumstances would be a universal thing for all disabled women to understand. Definitely get this book if you know women struggling with their disabilities or the heavy expectations of womanhood in general. It's worth the read.
Such a great book, and so easy to read. I just loved her positive attitude about life, and wish more people would take a positive approach to life's challenges.
