A (literary) feast for the senses! I'm sure it helped that I was reading a physical copy of this book that was published over 80 years ago, so it had that wonderful old-book smell and feel. But the text itself was a delight and a comfort. Wonderful descriptions of life on a homestead in the forested far-north of Michigan in the late 19th century. Reading these pages I could hear the sounds of the forest, smell the pork frying in a cast-iron skillet, feel the dirt under my fingers, and see the changing faces of Lake Michigan. This isn't a linear narrative to be rushed through, it's a collection of snapshots of frontier life to be slowly experienced and savored. I'll be going back to bookmark some of my favorite descriptive passages to enjoy later when I can't physically go immerse myself in nature, but still want to feel the healing power of being surrounded by nature in a simpler time when we were so much closer to the Earth.
