I wanted to read something light and fluffy and I realised pretty quickly that this was quite the opposite of what I had been looking for. This is my first Anna Jacobs novel and I wonder if all her novels have a lot of sexual assault incidences in them? This is certainly not my cup of tea and it made me sick to my stomach although the story itself is nice enough. It reminded me a bit of Gone with the Wind (GWTW) when Scarlett was struggling to restore Tara to its former glory. The shooting of a man scene was probably inspired by a similar scene in GWTW, Dinny could be Melanie and Liza, Scarlett. But the problem is that Liza was no Scarlett. She called out for Benedict after shooting the man whereas Scarlett didn't bat an eyelid. She was as cool as a cucumber if you please. I rolled my eyes every time Liza called out for Benedict, jumping into his arms at every given opportunity. And yet we are reminded that Liza is very brave for living alone in Australia. She had Benedict's protection though who lived a stone's throw away. Scarlett had to rely only on herself. The men in this novel are either bullies or lechers or both. Only Benedict and Fergal are nice enough but they were still pretty patronizing. I don't think I'll be continuing this series.

I'm a big fan of Anna Jacobs but, sad to say, I found this novel a bit too depressing. The heroine, Liza, seemed to have one bad thing after another thrown at her. Of course, all of it is an opportunity for showing her strength of character. This was the first in Anna's 'Settlers' series and there is another one to follow but I have to be honest and say I shan't be reading it as I know, from the first one, that there's still the threat of her remaining bullying brother hanging over poor Liza's head. Sorry, Anna!

Riveting story from this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down - Liza was a great heroine and I felt that all the characters were brought to life very well. This was a very interesting read to see how the Settlers settling into Australia in that period of time. I am now reading the sequel to this book and cannot put it down either.

sad tale

This book has the usual Anna Jacobs story line,rape and the Irish portrayed in not a great way.The story itself didn’t need the seedy story line,as emigrating to Australia in the 1800’s had enough scope for a good story.
