After the success of her first two books, Heather Holleman received many requests to write a Bible study. And as a college English instructor, she wanted to make sure it really taught and didn’t simply inform. So she surveyed several women about what their dream study would look like, then got to work.
The result is Included with Christ, a narrative-driven study where you can bring your life before Scripture in the context of community. Together women will discern their personal shadow narratives—ways they are living outside of their identity in Christ—and then rewrite those narratives according to biblical truth.
This in-depth, 8-week study in Ephesians willequip women with six “signature stories” of God’s work in their lives—helping them combat exclusion, loneliness, weakness, decay, emptiness, and silence.
Designed to facilitate honest sharing and help you internalize biblical truth, Included in Christ will provide community and connectedness as well as spiritual nourishment. It will also guide you in how to share your story and the hope of Christ with someone who doesn’t yet know Him.

This Bible study is broken down into 8 weeks. Each day contains scripture to be read and instructions on what to focus on when reading. There is then 1-2 pages of information from the author about the verses/chapters being read that day. At the end of each day, there is a statement to think about, as well as questions, along with a space to write answers. This is the first time I have read a Bible study book that is this large and focused (I usually just read daily devotionals and do Bible journaling.) I was a bit intimated at first by the size of the book but I really enjoyed both the author's writing and the set up of the book. I liked the questions that go along with each day as writing has always helped me retain information and it makes you think about the chapters you have just read.
The author focuses on some specific themes and words found in Ephesians such as included and chosen, in fact I think the word included was focused on during the very first chapter. The author also includes stories and her own experiences to help readers understand and focus on the topics presented. Overall I really enjoyed the set up of this 8-week Bible Study or Ephesians, as well as the author's writing. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
Thank you to the publisher, Moody Publishing, for sending me a review copy of this book.
Heather Holleman says that Ephesians is a paradigm-shifting book – one that answers the most fundamental questions about our lives. In her new Bible study Included In Christ: Living A New Story From Ephesians, she reveals how Ephesians teaches us who we are, where we belong, and how to live included in Christ.
Heather Holleman is not your typical Bible study teacher and Included In Christ is not your typical 8-week Bible study. Heather is interested in helping you to find creative ways to dig into Scripture and to uncover the great truths found within Ephesians, so that your life will be transformed by this overarching theme:
We are included in Christ, and this changes everything about how we experience God and ourselves in relation to Him.
This beautifully designed book is filled with weekly lessons that revolve around 7 key words, along with 5 days of workbook-style lessons with personal questions, journaling space, charts and exercises to help you apply Scripture to your life.
What makes the Included In Christ study so unique, however, is Heather’s inclusion of Shadow Narratives and Savior Stories – writing exercises that help you identify the places in your life where you’ve gotten stuck in a story that was part of your life before Christ, and embrace the transformation you’re experiencing as you live out your new life in Christ.
Included In Christ is a highly personal, creative Bible Study that speaks to the heart. I highly recommend this study to you!

Ephesians is living the salvation story together. We are included in Christ, together with one another, - chosen, seated, strengthened, renewed, filled, and proclaiming-and now we see our Savior Stories as the we participate in each other's lives.
We can easily be stuck in living our life's for Christ when we live in our Shadow narrative. In the shadow narrative is where you find isolation, despair, the denying of the truth of the word, delighting in sin, narcissism, and a disconnect from Jesus. The Savior narrative is where you find hope, healing connection, redemption and truth. Heather Holleman is a fantastic communicator that she builds a foundation of the two narratives. The Savior and the Shadow. With these two narratives, she poses questions that cause you to think where you are at within your walk (or where you are stuck) with Christ and brings truth and grace in harmony. Where so many times, one is pitted against the other.
The key words that are expounded in the book of Ephesians are included, chosen, seated, filled renewed, strengthened and proclaiming. Each of these key words build our faith as we come to understand and apply them in our own narratives in community. Using her own experience and other salvation stories, we can see the bible come alive for us as well. I highly recommend this one.
A Special Thank You to Moody Publishers and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
The Book of Ephesians from the Bible is perhaps one of my favorite books. There is so much wisdom to be gleaned and it is a surprisingly short book at that. Yet don't be confused that just because it is short, doesn't mean that there isn't much to learn. In fact, Paul probably used so many concise specific topics that not only applied to the people living in Ephesus, but also is very relevant to us in our current modern day age. Ephesians is a letter from Paul that you can understand best by thinking about seven operative or most important words in this short study. These words happen to be vivid verbs. The seven words in the 8 week study of Ephesians surely change you. It represents deeply transformation material. The hope is that after you finish this study people will begin to wonder and ask if you are a different person.
To complete this study you will need, a Bible ( one that you love the most will benefit you the best and everyone has their preferred choice), something to write on and with. Even though this study comprises eight weeks, five days each, keep your own pace and what works best for you. God may be calling you to spend time on something in this book that might be relevant to what He wants to teach you and what you are going through. I guess what anyone needs in completing any Bible Study is an open mind and a willing heart. This book can be used in an individual, couple or even a small group study through the book of Ephesians.
Each chapter in this book will ask you to think carefully about the crucial verb in each section and to picture a scene in our mind about this verb, such as 'how does a person understanding this verb live?' You first begin to answer the question bu first identifying their opposites or contrasts to enhance how we make sense of our new identity in Christ. You will begin with a shadow narrative about the particular verb you are studying. How that applies to your life, what are you doing or should be doing and then using your five senses see if you can develop a short story about how He is currently writing about this verb in your life. These can be positive or negative and can be things you want to share or just keep to yourself. By the end of the study you will quickly identify ways your Shadow Narratives prevent you from fully embracing and fully inhabiting God's Word and you will have new stories to tell, your Savior story, to truly learn from the Scripture.
I received Included in Christ by Heather Holleman compliments of Moody Publishers and Side Door Communications. Each of this daily and weekly studies are to help you understand how you can become a new creation in Christ and embrace that and learn to let go of the old you, the former person who is trying to keep you from all Christ has in store for you. Think of it like spring cleaning for your soul and its about time to learn to let go of that excess baggage we've been carrying and lighten our loads and embrace the joy that comes from having a Christ centered life. These are perfect for small group studies or even a couple's study that will enrich your relationships in ways you never dreamed possible. I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion.
I may have mentioned this before already, but I absolutely ADORE Moody Bible Studies for Women! Whenever a new title in this amazing series is released, I am anxious to give it a try—and I’ve never been disappointed. The newest study I’ve been enjoying is entitled “Included in Christ: Living a New Story from Ephesians” by Heather Holleman. This 8-week Bible study takes students of the Word on a journey verse-by-verse through the book of Ephesians, and unpacks what it really means to answer the questions: “Who are we? Where do we belong? How do we live included in Christ?”.
A main focal point of this unique study is the practice of overcoming what Heather calls our “Shadow Narratives” with something far better: our “Savior Stories”. This concept is woven into each and every lesson, to varying depths and in many different ways. At the same time, through the series of lessons readers delve into several unique but equally important words: Included, Chosen, Seated, Strengthened, Renewed, Filled (with the Holy Spirit), and Proclaiming (our Savior Stories).
Each lesson (or week) is divided into five sections, one section to be completed each day. So what does a typical day’s study look like? Well, it usually starts with reading a passage from Ephesians, often with a pen in hand to underline or highlight key words (usually verbs). Next comes a reading from the text, which contains personal stories and insights from the author, featured Savior Stories from real women, and often cross-referenced verses from Scripture. Finally, this is followed by a series of questions, exercises, and writing prompts designed to help you think and apply the truths to your life, and to continue the Savior Story you are writing, both on paper and with your life.
In the end, “Included in Christ” is one of my favorite additions to the Moody Bible Studies for Women series. It is not a light and fluffy daily reading, but rather a text that doesn’t hesitate to dive deep into the book of Ephesians and ask (and answer) some tough questions. Although this is the first book I’ve read by Heather Holleman, it definitely won’t be my last! If you are looking for an in-depth Bible study, don’t miss this new addition to the Moody Bible Studies for Women.
I received this book courtesy of Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Included In Christ: Living A New Story From Ephesians is an 8-week Bible study of Ephesians by Heather Holleman. During the course of this study, Heather guides us through the book of Ephesians, one chapter at a time, while learning to write our own Savior Stories and use them to replace the Shadow Narratives that we so often tell about our lives.
What exactly are Savior Stories and Shadow Narratives? A Shadow Narrative is "a story that you tell yourself over and over again that keeps you in the darkness of exclusion and loneliness, weariness, and toxic patterns of jealousy, comparison, and despair." To contrast, a Savior Story (also called a Signature Story) is "a classic story that best represents who you are." Heather also describes Savior Stories as "healing stories, hopeful stories, and harmonizing stories about your life."
Now, you're probably reading this and trying to figure out what all of this has to do with the book of Ephesians. Here's the simple answer: verbs. Heather has broken down the book of Ephesians into seven main verbs that are studied one at a time and applied to our own stories as she helps us learn to tell "the right story" about our life.
This Bible study is so much more than just reviewing the book of Ephesians and it's various hidden implications. It's also a journey of personal discovery as you learn exactly what it means to be Included, Chosen, Seated, Strengthened, Renewed, Filled, and Proclaiming within your Savior Story - the story that no one but you can take hold of and claim.
Written by Heather Holleman, a teacher of composition and advanced writing at Penn State, this study is not just for those people who "like to write". As long as you're willing to follow her simple suggestions and seek out honest answers to her heart-felt questions, this book will help you discover the real you hidden beneath the Shadow Narrative of the everyday hustle. Now is the time to rewrite the story you tell others - and yourself - about your life and God's place in it. This is the tool to help you begin that journey. 5/5 stars.
*Disclaimer: I received a complimentary print copy of this book from Moody Publishers for the purpose of this honest review. All opinions are my own.*
Included in Christ by Heather Holleman is intended to be an 8-week study of Ephesians, working through the book five days each week. During the study, you will read through the book of Ephesians many times, which you would expect. What you might not expect in an 8-week long study of Ephesians is 8-weeks of mostly self-exploration, creating things dubbed a "Signature Story/Savior Story" and your "Shadow Narrative." This is why it is important to consider subtitles when scoping out a new book. This book's subtitle is "Living a New Story from Ephesians." Now not that this subtitle screams, "Whoa!," but it should at least mutter "Hmmmm…." when you see it. A quick read-through of the introduction will explain just how psychology- and therapy-rooted this "Bible study" is. Not that psychology or therapy is a bad thing! On the contrary! However, when I think of a Bible study, the first thing I think of is NOT psychotherapy.
Holleman explains how she "collects" verbs that "transform her soul" and that she uses a method of study that is focused on both words and pictures. The student of this study will construct a Shadow Narrative about "the dominant stories that keep you wounded." Holleman is a writing professor and studied "the psychology of emotion for five years to earn her Ph.D., studying shame and guilt." She encourages the student of this study to learn about "the power of writing, sharing words in community, and revising our stories with a new lens." She explains about all the benefits of "positive psychology and cognitive restructuring."
I am a Bible student, learning how to study the one, true meaning of a Scriptural passage by learning about the author's original intent with his original words, written in their original language. Holleman's type of "speak" doesn't do much for me. For a deeper dive into the book of Ephesians, in a similar format, minus the psychotherapy, check out Kay Arthur's Free From Bondage God's Way.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Moody Publishers. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.
Moody Publishers graciously sent me this book free of charge and I am offering an honest review.
Included in Christ is a daily, 8-week bible study on the book of Ephesians. Written by Heather Holleman, it takes the reader on a journey of self-exploration while examining in-depth truths of this Pauline epistle. I jumped at the chance to read this study as I have been drawn to Ephesians quite often the last few months, and I hoped it would give me the opportunity to take a deeper look at this book, with so many well-known scriptures. The author guides you through the book of Ephesians will ease and skill. Not only will the reader finish the book with a renewed love for the Bible overall, they will also see themselves as being a part of the story.
One of the most important features of this book is that it reads like a personal journey rather than a traditional bible study. Each day, there are questions that help the reader relate and apply what they have read to their everyday life. The tone of the book is conversational in an unassuming and endearing way, making this study the perfect companion for readers at all levels and stages of bible study. Heather combines her insight as both a student of the word and a writer, producing a result that will be a touchstone for both new and seasoned Christians alike.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I felt it had a special pull for writers such as myself. I was inspired specifically by the featured Savior Stories, as well as Heather's own personal walk through Ephesians. I would highly recommend this study to anyone! I am glad to say that I too have a Savior Story!
A free paperback copy was given to me from Moody for this honest review. Included in Christ by Heather Holleman is an 8 week study of Ephesians. This paperback book is the same in size, lay-out, organization of the weeks and days, and type-font as the previous reviewed study. The differences is the print is black and teal. I do not see maps. The translation used is the NIV. Some Scripture translations are NASB and the NLT. At the starting page for each week, a beautiful quote is given on a two page graphic lay-out. Week 3/Day 4, Ephesians 2:1-10. A stirring quote is given, “Seated people adore instead of obsess over appearance.” Holleman goes on to talk about how she has tried to “hide my imperfections.” Instead, “We radiate the beauty of Christ as we adore Him from our seats in the heavenly realms.” Page 92. I noticed this study of Ephesians prompted further Scripture readings than the Acts study. The final chapter is on sharing the message of the Gospel that’s been read.
Everyone longs to fit somewhere. We want to feel loved and like we belong. Heather Holleman gives us a picture of being "Included in Christ" and the words that describe the gift of being a part of His family: we are chosen, seated, strengthened, renewed, filled, and proclaiming. All these are verbs found in the book of Ephesians- a book rich with reminders of the gospel and the blessings of being Jesus'. As one who loves literature and writing, this study on Ephesians takes you on a journey through that book of the Bible exploring these verbs and the truths that help us when we are discouraged as well as on the good days while providing opportunities to reflect on our Savior Stories- stories that remind us of the gospel at work in our lives. I highly recommend this Bible Study as a great way to reflect on truth and to live in light of Who we are and What we are given in Christ.
Heather Holleman leads us to dive in into the Ephesians like no other Bible Study… She provided the workbook with a journaling space to write down reflections, thoughts, questions and to road map the advances in traveling through the Ephesians… Being a composition teacher and an advanced writing instructor, Heather combines the experience in reading, reflecting and creating your own Ephesians in every person who is brave enough to take on this course.
I love her writing style, and the design of the workbook is a nice size to carry and write in. Great for the personal development and with the Small Groups of Bible Study.
She points out that all, the Jews and the Gentiles are both included in Christ and His Kingdom.
In this thought provoking, scripture driven study of Ephesians, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've clung to Jesus like never before. Heather has a talent for writing stories each of her readers can relate to on such a personal level while also diving into scripture and really applying it to our lives. I am excited to see how God challenges and provokes my faith as I go through this study with a group of women. I definitely recommend you dive into Ephesians with Heather and learn about how YOU are included in Christ!
This Bible study of Ephesians by Heather Holleman has been transformative for me. Since I started it, I've found myself thinking of the verbs she highlights several times a day. It has made an incredible difference in my life to know that I am included in Christ, seated with Him, and now proclaim Him. This has been especially precious to me through a difficult season of life right now. It has helped me distinguish when I'm living in what Heather calls "shadow narratives" rather than my identity in Christ.
I could go on and on! I can't recommend this Bible study enough!
Wow. Loved this study. I am already sharing with others what I have learned from this study. I should mention that I love Ephesians, and I have done a couple of studies on Ephesians already, but nothing like this one. Definitely a good study for women. Now I am reading her book Seated.
Used this for Ladies Bible Study class. Might be better suited for a class of new believers—those who haven’t yet formulated their Savior Story yet. I teach a class consisting of ladies who are seasoned believers. We all had to glean what we could from this one.
This is an awesome Bible study. The author is so thorough. I absolutely love the breakdown of the book: by seven unique and important words/phrases. I love how deep and meaningful each day's study can be. I left this Bible study feeling like I actually learned something of value. It is definitely more than a standard "milk and cookies" Bible study. I will definitely recommend this to my fellow Bible-studying friends. And, I am picking up a copy in June so I can write notes, and go deeper into this study. SO GOOD!
"Included in Christ" is an 8-week Bible study of Ephesians (with 5 days of study per week). Each week focused on one of seven verbs found in Ephesians: included, chosen, seated, strengthened, renewed, filled, proclaiming. For example, "proclaiming" talked about the words you use and about evangelism.
The overall theme is that we believe Shadow Narratives containing lies that make use feel excluded, weak, empty, etc. When we learn the truth and live like someone who is Chosen, Included, etc., then we start to live our Savior Stories. She shared Savior Stories that were written by people she knows, and she asked questions to help you identify your Shadow Narratives and rewrite them into Savior Stories. The last week focused on how to write out and share your Savior Story.
The author suggested visualizing meaningful symbols to help remember these verbs and how they affect our lives. This study can be done on your own or as a group study were you share your answers. Some answers involve revealing your fears and feelings, so it might work best for groups that are comfortable with each other. Overall, I'd recommend this Bible study.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
