A crime scene cleanup employee discovers a tunnel to a half-built underground city in the basement of a dead man's house. There he meets a woman who introduces him to a powerful new drug with unpredictable properties. As he struggles to cope with an increasingly incomprehensible world and his own human failings, he makes a dangerous enemy and falls in with a cult of children intent on climbing a tower into the sky.
Definitely one of the most unique reads I've had in a long time. The first third of this book was -⭐, but after the kids hit the New Equipment, I was hooked.
I read this book a couple years ago. I had been in a slump for years. Literally every book I picked up for two or three years was put down quickly. My friend recommended this book to me, they hadn’t read it yet but their brother did.
This is my favorite book ever now. I finished it in 24 hours. So introspective and uniquely horrifying all at the same time. I made a couple friends read it and they all loved it as well. We met up to read it and started a book club a year ago because of it.
I know it’s dramatic, but this book actually changed how I approach reading. It made me realize I do have a preferred genre and helped me reconnect with an important part of me. My book club has grown to a large amount of people and we meet up every three weeks for books, and now horror movies in between as well. I never would’ve started this journey if it wasn’t for this book.
He takes you to a whole other world that I think everyone should explore. He is absolutely my favorite author (his second book was also *chef’s kiss* amazing).
No spoilers or extra descriptions from me. Please read this book.
I had to let the book simmer in my mind for a while before I gave my final rating. Just as I was falling asleep, it occured to me just how brilliant the ending was. Endings really make or break a story, no matter how fantastic the overall piece may be. I wasn't too sure at first, but wow! This, on top of how easy it was for me to read without getting distracted. Easy 5 stars. Absolutely loved it! You're making it difficult for me to hold onto my firm love for Frankenstein and The Princess Bride. Three books tied for favorite. We love to see it!
