Phew! If I don't quit reading these 1100 page tomes I'm not going to finish my reading challenge this year lol! Still these Edge Chronicle books are great. As I've said I love the illustrations and the stories are interesting.
Pheww, I cant believe I finally finished it, it took me almost six years since I purchased this, to actually start reading it, and I still remember the joy and the grin on my face to hold such BEATIFUL book. the cover and the size of it promised too much, and it did deliver,
BUT,
I made a few mistakes, first I should have started the tale with the very beginning , give that this third trilogy in the chronicles though it does take you an a closed circle, and it wont affect the the plot majorly, I still regret not reading it in the proper sequence .
the second mistake was actually purchasing this huge tome. cos once you started you cant stop, it demands to be finished, while if you got it on three different parts you can take a break in-between, silly I know I could stopped after each part but it is how I felt, it had to be tackled page by page, no rest and no putting on hold.
as for the plot, I simply Loved Rook, and Xanth and since it is a combined book of three parts there lots of things going on, and WARRRRRS ,blood and death sacrifices, it is not a book for children, it is scary and twisted and I simply loved it, and if anything, it proves how much war is meaningless. have to admit my favorite parts when we were with Rook or Xanth our protagonists, but whenever the book wandered to the antagonists parts, I feel myself drifting and want to skip the pages, and my eyes did skim a paragraph or two not caring to go back and focus.
all on all a huge magnificent tale, enjoyable and exhilarating. and am defiantly going to pick it from the start, but book by book mind you, no combined adventure again for me ,thank you very much "whispers" unless it has such beautiful edition like this one.
whimsical, incredibly detailed, i felt like i was there. AND it has a map of all the areas!!! Love the characters introduced and the adventures and travesties we encountered. Area's simply apparated into my head because of how the author described and breathed like into not only the scenery but also every individual they introduced. I will be coming back several times to read this story, as i am so invested in the world they announced to us.
This is 3 books in one. I've never read any of the Edge Chronicles series before, but that wasn't an issue with these books. The illustrations were a great addition to the story.
Last of the Sky Pirates A rather a disjointed story where the title character doesn't show up until the last 1/4 of the book. And it's not like the main character was even looking for him the rest of the time...
Vox It was a more cohesive story than the first book. The title character's importance was actually understandable for this book. Still following Rook's adventures; seems to end with a direct set-up for the final book.
Freeloader This was the culmination of the previous stories; it wrapped up the story well without being cloying. While Rook's still ostensibly the main characters, main of the other characters get a spotlight in this book. Probably the most enjoyable of the 3 books, but wouldn't have made much sense without having read Vox first.
This trilogy is one of my favourite books. The plot is written beautifully. This book is truly exciting and involving. It just flows simply and perfectly from page to page and chapter to chapter. It has just the right level of complexity for its age group. The charming illustrations are fantastic too. They are the perfect complement to the text. Your children will love this book. The characters are larger than life and are created in such a way to make it easy for your kids to identify with them and live the stories through their eyes. This is an extremely creative book full of wonderful people, places, settings and creatures. The good guys are true heroes and the baddies are dark and ruthless. This book is shear perfection, from beginning to end. Enjoy!
A totally wonderful kids fantasy book; not bad for an adult. Story of a young boy Rook, orphaned at age 4 and raised by librarians. He becomes a library knight and has adventure after adventure. It's one of those books that will keep you reading by flashlight after all other lights are out.
Good read, along with beautiful illustrations. Pretty different, and definitely one of the best books you'll read. Loose yourself in another world, and follow the story of Rook; fly with him through the sky, and venture through the Deepwoods... Amazing.
I don't think I could pick a favourite out of the three. They all suffer from the same flaw which is a very slow start. But if you persevere through that it does turn out to be a very fun read.
