From Devious Maid s star Roselyn Sanchez and Witches of East End star Eric Winter comes a story about the joys of dance!
It is El Carnaval Latino and Sebi is really excited. She loves the colorful clothes, the lively music but most of all she loves the dance. Her mother says she is a bit too young to take dance lessons. But when a beautiful Cotorra bird flies by and invites her and her friend, Keeke to follow, they are led on an exciting adventure to an enchanted land where the dancing fun has just begun!
Sebi loves to move to the beats of the Carnival music. She wants to join in the parade, but her mom thinks she's too young. She and her friend KeeKee are guided by a parrot into the animal kingdom who teach her and KeeKee different dance moves on a bilingual journey through the Land of the Cha Cha Cha.
Sebi, KeeKee, and the readers learn different dance styles/names and different Spanish words throughout their journey. It is a fun book, perfect for Spanish intro, cultural exploration, and introduction to different dance styles.
A fun trip to the land of Cha, Cha, Cha. Would be fun to pair with some basic dance instruction - I'm not sure the limited directions in the text are enough to really get a sense of the dances. The vibe is fun, the illustrations are bright and colorful, and there are mini-histories of each dance in the back matter.
This is one of our library's new acquisitions; the cover and art and title caught my attention. We took it home without even opening it and the whole family loved it! T wanted it at snack time, dinner time, after dinner, and then again as a bed time story!
V's Review
Sebi, a young girl watching El Carnaval Latino with her family and a friend, learns various Latin dances.
When Sebi and her friend Keeke watch the costumed adult dancers, they express a desire to learn to dance. Sebi's mother tells her that she can take lessons when she is older, but a lovely green bird beckons the children to the "Land of Cha Cha Cha," where they learn several dances from talking animals. When they hear Sebi's mother calling, they return and show off their new dance moves.
I loved this book for several reasons. First and foremost, the vibrant colors and fluid lines made the illustrations seem to truly dance. Second, the story was a fun way for children to learn about different Latin dances. And finally, the authors incorporated Spanish words in such a way that even someone who cannot speak Spanish, like myself, can understand and introduce at least a few words to her/his child.
