Don Coldsmith was an American author of primarily Western fiction. A past president of Western Writers of America, Coldsmith wrote more than 40 books, as well as and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. His “Spanish Bit Saga,” a series of related novels, helped to re-define the Western novel by adopting the point of view of the Native Americans, rather than the European immigrants.
One of my favorite books in this series. It encompasses an actual historical event as seen from an outsider. It also addresses much of the friction between European and Native American cultures. Whether it is religion, lifestyle, personal choice, or philosophy, Native American couldn't grasp the European mind, government, or religion, nor did they want to. The Europeans only set out to dominate the continent, not only it's native population, but also any European rivals. How remarkable native nations didn't kill every European they were in contact with, but shared knowledge and skills enabling settlers to thrive. That's gratitude for you.
Very good "Western" story. It's actually not like your normal American Western tale. Lots of nicely developed characters and a nice continuing storyline. Recommended
