Into The No-Zone

Rate this book
What price for peace on Wrath? The blood-curdling sequel to science-fiction epic The Sign of One.

Hiding out in a Gemini stronghold, Kyle is finding out that being a hero is a bit of a let-down. The rebels may have struck a blow against the Slayer army, but victory is far from won and Wrath is as hostile as ever. Kyle finds himself caught between his ident brother Colm, who he saved from certain death, and his friend Sky, who is desperate to follow up a trail that may or may not lead to her lost sister.

When the Slayers offer a peace deal with a sting in its tail, the rebels are split into factions – with Kyle at its centre. There’s no choice but to run – and this time the path leads deep into Reaper territory, into the No-Zone.

A year has never felt so long! I read the first book, put it down and started counting off the days for this book to come out. And I wasn't disappointed. It pulled me, rushed me through it, and spat me out all in one day. Kyle is once again hilarious and clueless, although he can still kick butt is he needs to. Sky is exactly as I remember her; strong and bad-ass.

My one problem with this book is that I HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR TO READ THE NEXT ONE!! I need to read The Long Forever now! What happens next?! 2018 can't come quick enough!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Into the No-Zone is a good sequel. Fans of The Sign of One will be glad to return to the dump planet of Wrath and see what trouble Kyle, Colm and Sky get themselves into! Things are not easy on this planet for most people, especially not our protagonists, which makes it action-packed and full of peril and intrigue.

It's a typical dystopian, with the occasional info dump, but having re-read The Sign of One just before picking this up I thoroughly enjoyed getting to explore some other aspects of the society that we didn't get to see much of in first book. We also get answers to some of the questions left hanging but there's still a lot left unresolved. Everything ended on a very exciting note that has me eager to read on in the series.

Honestly, it took me a little while to get into this story, but once the adventure really started I was hooked back in. Recommended for fans of action-filled, adventurous YA dystopian novels.

Great 2nd book in the trilogy! The plot is always moving and changing and even though there are "still" moments they are all relevant to the story! Character development is great and the emotion descriptions are fantastic and add an extra depth which I love. Looking forward to diving into the next one.

Into the No-Zone continues the story/journey of our hero, Kyle, and his friends as they struggle and sacrifice for freedom, acceptance, healing, and peace on the world of Wrath. Into the No-Zone is the sequel to The Sign of One and the second book of a trilogy. As such, it moved the storyline along but also felt like a bridge or set-up to something bigger in the third book. I hope I am not wrong and won't be disappointed as I eagerly wait for the third book.

As was true of The Sign of One, I think this book/series would also be a brilliant book to use in schools to foster great discussions in English class, especially among boys and reluctant readers. This part of the trilogy provides great discussion material including: What is an acceptable cost/price for peace? What is the value of an individual versus the value of a society? How is "what is best" determined and who gets to decide? and the morality of taking advantage of a seemingly more primitive society. Additionally, there are two big themes in this story that resonated with me, stereotypes and sacrifice. With regards to stereotypes, the Reapers and Kyle's interaction with them (along with twins themselves) provide great material for discussing: What are stereotypes? How are they created, fostered, spread? Are they based in truth? Should they be believed? How do they help and/or hurt a society? and Do they promote understanding, fear, and/or curiosity about a group? With regards to sacrifice, the story abounds with examples of it. Almost every major character struggles with at least one of the following: making a sacrifice themselves, the cost and fear associated with sacrifices, and accepting/suffering the choices and consequences of other people's sacrifices.

The action and pacing of this story continued to be well done. There was quite a bit of action in both the beginning and the end of the story. The middle was slower but used well to deepen and develop already known characters, introduce new ones, and expand the reader's sense of the Wrath world. New characters and societies were introduced in this book and I enjoyed learning about the Reapers. They were very interesting. There were some very touching and emotional scenes in this book. I liked that both Kyle and Sky continued to show sensitive and vulnerable sides of themselves, along with their kick-ass sides too.

I thought this book had more of a cliff-hanger ending than the first book did (bad, mean Eugene - to leave that ending and make us wait for a year) and it left quite a few loose ends that will need to be answered in the last book of the trilogy. As was true of The Sign of One, this would also make a brilliant movie. Come on producers... look this way... great movie sitting right here.
