In a writing career spanning over two decades he produced twenty-two collections of short stories, one novel, five collections of radio plays, three collections of essays, two collections of reminiscences and many scripts for films. He was tried for obscenity half a dozen times, thrice before and thrice after independence. Not always was he acquitted. Some of Manto's greatest work was produced in the last seven years of his life, a time of great financial and emotional hardship for him. He died a few months short of his forty-third birthday, in January 1955, in Lahore.

An apt title for this book would be "Rajo Aur Miss Fariya.... aur anya kahaniya".
That's because this single story is around 60 pages, while rest of the 14 stories are ten pages or lesser.
Moreover, Rajo aur Miss Fariya is not included in general in any of his usual collections. Not even in this great collection -
Stories I loved:
Taki Katib - For its excellent usage of Urdu. "Muhaavra thik istemaal kiya na Manto sahib?"
Karz ki Peete Thhe - For the love of Ghalib and his ghazals in a story. Reminded of my favorite book -
Other stories which were (weird and) good:
Thanda Ghosht
Walid Sahib
Alla Ditta
Badshahat ka Khatma
A decent collection overall.
That's because this single story is around 60 pages, while rest of the 14 stories are ten pages or lesser.

सआदत हसन मंटो की कुछ चुनी हुई कहानियों का संकलन।
ये कहना था मंटो का जो पिछले कुछ वर्ष पूर्व इसी नाम की एक फ़िल्म आने से चर्चा में हैं - कम से कम आम जनता के बीच। साहित्यिक मंडलियों में तो मंटो सदा से ही चर्चित रहे हैं। उनके उपर्युक्त कथन से इस पुस्तक को पढ़ने से पहले ही एक अच्छी ख़ासी पृष्ठभूमि तैयार हो जाती है पाठकों के मन में। इसलिए मन पहले से तैयार था पर कहानियाँ और वाक़िये फिर भी आपको झकझोर ही देते हैं।
कुछ कहानियों पर संक्षिप्त टिप्पणियाँ :
ठंडा गोश्त
शायद मंटो की सबसे चर्चित कहानियों में से एक। मंटो ने बहुत अंतरंग भाषा का उपयोग कर कहानी के पात्रों ईश्वर सिंह और कुलवंत कौर के बीच हुई 'गतिविधियों' को उघाड़ा है। एक हिस्सा नीचे उद्धृत कर रहा हूँ:
पर यह मात्र पाठकों में उत्तेजना उत्पन्न करने का एक माध्यम नहीं है। एक सीधा सम्बन्ध कहानी के अंत में हुए खुलासे से है। लेखक ने पात्रों के आपसी सम्बंधों का अतिरेक विवरण देकर अंत में खुलने वाले भेद के लिए वैषम्य पृष्ठभूमि प्रस्तुत की है। अधिक कुछ नहीं लिखूँगा।
तकी कातिब
एक पिता द्वारा अपने पुत्र के लिए जवानी में किए गए त्याग से उत्पन्न कुंठा और उसके मनोवैज्ञानिक प्रभावों का रोचक विवरण। वैसे मुझे लगा था कि इसका अंत कुछ अलग ही होगा - एक दिन सुनने में आएगा कि बीती रात तकी ने अपने पिता की हत्या कर दी।
वालिद साहब
इस कहानी का भी बड़ा रोचक और अप्रत्याशित अंत है। पर मुझे अच्छा लगा यह शब्दों का खेल - "नसीर ने सिगरेट की गर्दन ऐश ट्रे में दबाई"।
इश्क़ ए हक़ीक़ी
एक और कहानी जिसका अंत आकस्मिक और अप्रत्याशित था। अंत में हुए खुलासे से पाठक विभिन्न भावों की लहरों में गोते लगाने लगता है। भय मिश्रित उत्सुकता इस बात से उत्पन्न होती है कि कहीं ये कहानी किसी वास्तविक घटना पर आधारित तो नहीं?
राजो और मिस फ़रिया
यह सबसे लम्बी कहानी है। लेखक ने इसके माध्यम से सामाजिक व्यवस्थाओं पर बहुत व्यंग्य कसे हैं। मुझे लगा कि लेखक ने इस कहानी के मुख्य पात्र में स्वयं को ढूँढा है शायद? एक और मज़ेदार बात यह कि इस कहानी के कुछ हिस्से उन्होंने एक दूसरी कहानी 'फातो' में जैसे के तैसे उपयोग किए हैं!
अल्ला दित्ता
यह शायद इस संकलन की सबसे विवादास्पद कहानी थी। कहानी को पढ़ना बड़ा कठिन है, कई बार तो दुबारा से पढ़ना पड़ा यह पक्का करने के लिए कि मैं जो समझ रहा हूँ वो सही समझ रहा हूँ कि नहीं?

ईशर सिंह अपनी घनी काली मूँछों में मुस्कुराया, “होने दे आज ज़ुल्म?” और ये कह कर उसने मज़ीद ज़ुल्म ढाने शुरू किए। कुलवंत कौर का बालाई होंट दाँतों तले किचकिचाया। कान की लवों को काटा, उभरे हुए सीने को भंभोड़ा, उभरे हुए कूल्हों पर आवाज़ पैदा करने वाले चाँटे मारे। गालों के मुँह भर भर के बोसे लिये। चूस चूस कर उसका सारा सीना थूकों से लथेड़ दिया।
कुलवंत कौर तेज़ आंच पर चढ़ी हुई हांडी की तरह उबलने लगी। लेकिन ईशर सिंह उन तमाम हीलों के बावजूद ख़ुद में हरारत पैदा न कर सका। जितने गुर और जितने दाव उसे याद थे। सब के सब उसने पिट जाने वाले पहलवान की तरह इस्तेमाल करदिए, पर कोई कारगर न हुआ। कुलवंत कौर ने जिसके बदन के सारे तार तन कर ख़ुदबख़ुद बज रहे थे। ग़ैर ज़रूरी छेड़छाड़ से तंग आकर कहा, “ईशर सय्यां, काफ़ी फेंट चुका है, अब पत्ता फेंक!”

People who don't know who Manto is, need to get their hands on one of his short story collections.

The first story I ever read by Manto was Thanda Gosht (Cold Meat) I hid from my mother because I was reading it on her phone and reading Manto was a big No-No.
Manto is known for his Obscenity. Which in retrospect is just him talking about real people with real problems. Stories from the time of the India-Pakistan partition were obscene. The women of both religions were treated as a tool for revenge. If I start delving into the realities, I would be called names too.
Thanda Gosht is about a man who comes back home after doing his partition-related "work" which is mainly just looting and killing people. But when he reveals that he was with a woman, his wife takes an action that no one anticipated. Only to find out the dark truth behind what actually happened between her husband and the woman. Now, I am not one to give spoilers so I will let you read it. I will tell you this story gave me the chills. No wonder it is still relevant.
Another story in this collection is that of a wife waiting for her husband who has gone fishing in the storm. She knows he may or may not come back. She thinks to herself that maybe the job is not worth the meager income they get from it. But in the neighbor's house, she finds something unexpected and takes a decision without thinking of the repercussions or consulting her husband.
Another story (this one is definitely way ahead of its time and I am not surprised that it got the hate) is about a man falling in love with a girl. It's a sweet love story until the end is revealed which is well, weird but since I have seen such a storyline multiple times I was unaffected. However, it would have been repulsive back in the day.
I can't talk about all the stories in this books cause I might give something away but I would highly recommend you to read Manto (especially in Hindi or Urdu, we know how translations don't usually do justice to the original)
If you are interested in Manto's life you should watch the Bollywood movie, called Manto (2018) based on his life, his love for writing, his love for Bombay, his friendships and his life post partition and how he met his end.
I hope this review gets more people interested in Manto's writing.

I can’t ignore the fact that I never heard about this great Indian writer before I watched movie “Manto” on Netflix. Writers like Manto and Premchand bring the aroma and essence of India through their stories.i can’t resist emotions playing while reading their work sometimes in form of smile and sometimes as sadness.
Manto was known for saying truth and showing our society through his short stories. This book is a collection of such short stories which including his famous work “Thanda Gosht” - Great portrayal of evil during Hindu- Muslim riots at the time of partition.
Few other stories which I loved -
Taki Katib - About a selfish father who is insecure for his son
Walid Saheb - About the extra marital affair
Isq-e-hakiki - About the reality of what we call Love
Bhangan - About social indifferences
Allah Ditta - About illegal affair
Rajo and Miss Fariya - About love and social differences
Many of us may found these stories biased, sexual or imaginative but in true they are just the portrayal of our society and ours.

I had never personally been a big fan of fiction but over the period of time i have learnt the importance of the old classics for they have captured the time it had been written in.
Manto, recently released bollywood film featuring nawazuddin did captivate my interest but not as much as to actually read him but when you are student of history and passionate connoiseur of raw and morbid literature, you can't miss manto.
The beauty isnt just the morbidity but the cruel truth that he displays with immense purity.
His writings blaze of harsh life he had been through and harsher life he witnessed aroumd himself.
Obviously english translated version would not be as much fun as one might experience it reading either in urdu or hindi.
