This story is about Izzy, who decided to follow her grandfather to the place called Family Togetherness Home. Izzy had a grandfather who loved to serve the Lord and the community who were having a hard time. Izzy saw a girl sitting on the floor in the corner by herself and Izzy’s grandfather asked Izzy to give a girl some gourmet chowder. However, this girl did not have a happy face. The next day Izzy asked her mom if she could give her small clothes to Izzy. Izzy’s mom agreed, and she was so happy that she hugged Izzy. When Izzy arrived at the place, she handed a girl the bag but the girl did not seem to be that happy, which made Izzy surprised and confused. Izzy expressed her feelings to her grandfather and he told Izzy that the best way to know a person’s name is to ask them. Izzy went to the girl and introduced herself and found out that the girl's name was Susan. Izzy and Susan start playing hopscotch and they have so much fun and become good friends.
The overall theme of The Braids Girl is to not just give material to someone. Instead it is better to know the person well and make time for them. It also taught the importance of getting out of our comfort zone and giving what we have to someone who has less.
When I read this book, it changed my perspective and reminded me of my friends experiences with her Dad. One of my friends shared with me about her childhood life and it was kind of sad. Since she was a child, her Dad would buy her everything she ever wanted but he didn’t give his time to spend with her. Not getting the opportunity to spend time with her Dad allow her to understand the meaningless of the material that her Dad brought her.
I would definitely recommend this book because it would help kids to understand the benefit of reaching the community. The book will also encourage the kids to leave their comfort zone and introduce themselves to someone who is different from their own. This book also taught how to make friends easily and prove the importance of being open to our friends and to make deeper relationships. I also believe that this book will allow the children to understand the benefits of sharing and how it could change their friendship and life.

A young girl wants to give to the poor, but can't seem to make the "braids girl" at the shelter smile with her presents. With direction from her grandfather, she learns that being a friend is the most special gift you can give.

I used this book to read to 3rd graders on using context clues to figure out hard words as well as to teach character development and teach on friendship. I wasn't able to finish the story and told the class we would finish it tomorrow, unfortunately we ran out of time that day as well and I had students asking me to finish it! Great read and great morals.

The story is nice but I don't think it is the most touching story that I have read. The wordings and language used are suitable for those below 12 years old, it is easy to understand but not suitable for teenagers like me.
