The Habsburg-Valois wars and the French wars of religion

Rate this book
Blaise de Monluc and his 'Commentaries' are well known in France, hardly at all in England. He helped to establish the legend, a century before d'Artagnan and Cyrano de Bergerac, of the dashing Gascon cavalier whose sword brings him fame and honour. He has another reputation of the bloody avenger of the Religious Wars. The Longmans Military Memoirs Series under the General Editorship of Brigadier Peter Young DSO, MC. Are authentic contemporary first hand accounts of historic campaigns by memoirists who either have long been out of print or have never been published. Edited by experts in their periods concerned and have been selected both for their value as contributions to military history and for their appeal to the general reader by their human qualities and the lively picture they give of the warfare and military manners of the past.

Surprised to find this on one of those free ebook sites, not Gutenberg but something similar. The formatting of the ebook was so terrible I had to give up, but it is an interesting work. A memoir from a french soldier that became a sort of infantry handbook during the age of arquebus combat. The siege of the mill of auriole in particular is fascinating. I only knew this existed because of Yuval Harari's case study of the siege in his book on Special Operations in the Age of Chivalry, 1100-1550. Kind of a shame he's riding that Paleolithic, agriculture-was-bad-for-us horse.
