THE SPY GATE LIARS. Dr. Watson receives an urgent telegram telling him that Sherlock Holmes in lying in a hotel room in eastern France and near death. He immediately rushes to aid his dear friend, only to find that what began as a doctor’s house call has turned into yet another adventure as Sherlock Holmes races to keep an unknown ruthless murderer from dispatching yet another former German army officer. The events that led to this Channel-hopping spy and murder mystery began in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. But the evil that was done back then has continued until the present day and vengeance will be had. The story is a tribute to the original story in the Canon, The Reigate Squires (known as The Reigate Puzzle in America).
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are called upon to travel to Germany to investigate the murders a Germany military unit. A murder takes place in the hotel they are staying in of a military officer. Holmes and Watson race back to England where another officer lives. They are unsuccessful in persuading him and his son of the risk. They are both killed two days later. Holmes and Watson return and learn the truth leading to uncovering the killer. I would recommend this series and author to 👍 fans of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson and readers of mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 😀😯👒👑🏰
Craig Copland offers his take on Conan Doyle's "Reigate Squires," and serves up an appetizing pastiche with some memorable characters. When a series of German officers are murdered in France, Holmes is tasked by the French police with solving the crimes. His investigation leads him to the trail of one of the most dangerous assassins in the world. Cop;land has crafted a great villain; sadly, we are unlikely to encounter the protagonist again. For Holmes fans, it's worth a read. The only drawback is that this is more a novella than a novel, but that's merte carping on my part.
I'll never get tired of saying this: Mr. Copland books are simply fantastic.
Faithful to the original style and to the heart of the characters, he manages to take an old story and make it new, and exciting and somehow... better.
I enjoyed this story. I found the nods to the original stories interesting. However, the end was quite unsatisfying. It felt unfinished in a way. Although, I did really appreciate the backstory/history that the author went through.
Great book. Copland doesn’t pad his stories with unnecessary dialogue or nonessential characters. This was really a great read. The last few chapters ties up the mystery in an unsuspecting way.
THE SPY GATE LIARS by Craig Copland. The Reigate Squires / Puzzle was the original title. Watson off to eastern France, after he receives a telegram. German officiers are being murdered. Channel hopping from 1870 with helping the French police. The worst assassins man has known. A chilling retale of the events, well done by Craig.. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
