Donut Hole Mystery #40

Kiwi Lime Surprise Murder

Rate this book
When Heather Shepherd and the crew from Donut Delights start their Key West escape, the last thing they expect to find is a dead body by the pool.
But that's exactly what happens - one of the waiters at their hotel has been murdered and in a totally 'Florida' way. Heather is drawn to the case, immediately, and embarks on another sleuthin' adventure. Equipped with a desire for truth, her best friend's help and a couple Kiwi Lime Surprise Donuts for good luck, Heather decides that this case is hers. But things in Key West aren't always what they seem, and Heather has to solve this one without any help from the police, while Florida's weird and wonderful characters hover in her peripherals, tempting her with truth and lies.
Heather has to figure this one out before the week ends and she has to fly back to Hillside, or an exotic murderer will remain on the loose.

I enjoyed this book until the very end, and then it got ruined by the over arching story line that I don't like. I will say though, I don't ever want to be anywhere around Heather as people keep turning up dead.

I do like the twist that she took her assistants to Florida to relax, and though they got to relax she was caught up in yet another murder investigation. I personally don't think that it was helping the story that she was actively investigating given that she knows that a PI needs to be brought in to the investigation by the local police. I would have preferred it to be rather by accident.

It was an interesting book though, and i did enjoy the linking of a past murder to the present, however I feel like it could have been executed a little better.

Everybody needs a vacation every so often and Heather Shepherd surprises her baking assistants with a vacation after all their hard work baking donuts. Off they went from Hillside, Texas to sunny Key West, Florida to swim, sail, eat a lot, have lots of fun, and maybe think of some new kinds of donuts to bake.

Florida is one steamy state but Heather and her assistants are used to the heat in Texas but Florida’s weather seems to be worse. So one night Heather leaves her hotel room to get a breath of steamy air when what does she find but a dead body. No matter where she goes there’s always a murder that she needs to investigate.

This victim is a woman lying beside a pool with blue-gray jelly blobs next to her. The woman, Daphne Wilder, is a waitress from the hotel and it looks like the murder weapon of choice was jellyfish. She went into anaphylactic shock after being stung several times. But how did these potentially deadly jellyfish get to the pool? Obvious someone wanted Daphne dead. But who and why?

Key West police Detective Smith is sure that he and his department can solve this murder without Heather and her her assistant Amy Givens’ help but Heather and Amy aren’t so sure about that. Heather has been working with the Hillside Police Department for quite some time helping to solve murders there and she knows that she can help Detective Smith. After all, Heather is really good at finding bad guys. She’s also a witness of sorts in this murder because she’s noticed a dangerous looking strange man hanging around the hotel.

Even though the detective doesn’t want Heather’s help that isn’t going to stop her from investigating just the same. She’s already discovered where the jellyfish came from and has even found a suspect or two. Nothing will stop Heather until she finds out who the killer is.

“Kiwi Lime Surprise Murder” is the 40th book in author Susan Gillard’s Donut Hole Cozy Mystery Series and of course it’s another winner. Like all the previous installments it’s chock full of fun and likable characters. The story line is short and sweet and easy to follow. Another good book to hunker down with on a snowy cold winter’s day and read about Florida, a good murder mystery, and a new yummy donut.

Heather rewards her employees with a vacation in Florida. Doubling up with views of the pool, and a kitchen to whip up new recipes of donuts. Typical hot weather for Florida, and the air conditioner wasn’t working that night. Heather taking a chair outside to the balcony. A noise, and then a car speeding away, looking to see what was going on. Heather finds a body, and a case to solve.Good short story, with a delicious sounding donut in the mix.

Heather takes Amy and the gang to Key West for a much needed vacation but as she is trying to cool off she finds a murdered employee outside her door. Without Ryan and his help can Heather and Amy find the killer and enjoy their vacation before heading home.

Love this series. Gets better all the time and still want to find those donuts that are in the book.

Topically Tasty

I love all the Donut Hole Cozy Mysteries. I'm collecting more and more as I go.
The only reason that I gave this one is there are a lot of typos and missing words. Very rare in Susan's books. Still an enjoyable, funny read.
Highly recommended!

Normally I don't give this series anything under 4 stars but I felt like I had to because of the grammatical errors period I also noticed too that there was some word placement issues and it wasn't really confusing but as I started to read the book it was driving me crazy. The mystery with Heather and Amy taken place and Key West Florida was amazing. I had no issue with that but I felt like this book may have been rushed a little bit and the proper editing was not done. If that would have been worked out, I could have given this book a 5 star. But the mystery in itself was amazing and that's why I gave this book a 3-star.

Key West, the perfect place to take your hard
working employees to for a surprise break!!!
Heather Shepherd, owner of Donut Delights and
certified investigator decides to treat her staff to
a surprise vacation in Key West.
Sun, sand, surf and fun is what Heather wants
her staff to experience after all the many hours
worked.
What she doesn't expect is a dead woman by their
hotel pool with Man of War bites........
Of course, Heather with Amy is off to investigate
even though she is not in her own state.
Some quirky, zany support characters make for a
interesting suspect list.
The featured donut is the Kiwi Lime Surprise which
the crew found easy to make in the kitchen of the
rental unit.
Meantime back home, Dave, the dog and Cupcake, the
cat are missing Heather. Cupcake has ripped up part
of a friends chair!!!
This is book #40 in the Donut Hole Cozy Mysteries
series. It can be read as a stand alone.

Heather and her assistants are in the Florida Keys for a well deserved break, but murder finds Heather even on vacation.

After 40 books in this series, the books remain entertaining. Susan Gillard has developed a very likeable heroine in Heather Shepherd. She continues to keep the story lines fresh and to develop her characters in each book. All in all the Donut Hole mysteries are very enjoyable.

Although I was given an Advanced Reader Copy of this book, my review is voluntary and the opinions my own.

Kiwi Lime Surprise Murder is the 40th installment in Susan Gillard’s Donut Hole Cozy Mystery series and is a quick, easy, fun, and clean read, but is in need of proof reading rather than reliance on spell check. Heather has taken her loyal employees to Key West to thank them for all their hard work. When the air conditioner stops working in Amy and Heather’s room, Heather has trouble sleeping and steps outside hoping for a cool breeze. She doesn’t get her wish but she hears noises and finds the body Heather finds is Daphne Wilder, a waitress at the hotel, and the murder weapon is quite unique. Amy encourages her to investigate but Heather is out of her comfort zone without Ryan to help her and doesn’t want to step on the feet of the local authorities but her sleuthing gene wins and she can’t resist the urge to investigate Daphne’s death.

Florida can be hot.

I loved the Florida story. It just shows how humid it can get. I also loved the fact that Heather treated her employees so well. I sure wish I had a boss so awesome. Thank you for such an awesome plot. Keep up writing these great stories.

What would you do if you were Heather and found a dead woman by the pool of the hotel where you are staying? You took your hard working employees on a surprise vacation to Key West Florida to have some fun and get some sun.
Well, since this is Heather and her bestie Amy of course they are going to investigate, although she does not have Ryan or the backing of the police.
Some interesting suspects and characters make this a good book for a cold winter day.

Heather takes her employees to Key West for a week as a reward for all the hard work they have put into The Donut Shop in the past year. While they are there for fun, it doesn't stop Heather from finding a murder case to solve! The way this person dies is certainly different from the other murders in the past and keeps her on her toes. Or should I say bed???

This one was a little different from the rest. Heather takes all her employees on a week long vacation
in Florida. While there they have a murder in their hotel , almost outside their door. Heather can't help herself, she has to try and solve it but this time she doesn't have Ryan feeding her some to the information she needs. Can she solve it without Ryan's help and before they have to head home.

Please stop rushing your books and take the time to have someone proofread them. They are great reads it's just the missed words and the misspellings that could be prevented!!!!
