Storytelling for Virtual Reality serves as a bridge between students of new media and professionals working between the emerging world of VR technology and the art form of classical storytelling. Rather than examining purely the technical, the text focuses on the narrative and how stories can best be structured, created, and then told in virtual immersive spaces. Author John Bucher examines the timeless principles of storytelling and how they are being applied, transformed, and transcended in Virtual Reality. Interviews, conversations, and case studies with both pioneers and innovators in VR storytelling are featured, including industry leaders at LucasFilm, 20th Century Fox, Oculus, Insomniac Games, and Google. This book is pretty neat. The author delivers on what he set out to do, giving us an insightful hands-on look at how immersion is shaping storytelling in various perspectives from various relevant and interesting professionals. A nice read, well passed and very vivid, unlike a lot of boring hyper-theoretical books on the matter. At the same time, it can be a bit superficial, so not the proper read if you want to get into profound definitions or procedures.
A must read for anyone interested in VR narrative design, writing, and creation. Can’t recommend the book enough and has been evaluable to me in my VR work.
Very helpful and interesting. I will be referring to it as I am working on XR projects as a developer and producer. The exercises in the book are going to be extra helpful to me while I add new narratives to my current VR projects.
