Published in 2014, The Storied life of A. J. Fikry is Gabrielle Zevin’s eighth novel since 2005 and her third book for adult readers. The publishers were Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, who will publish her next project as well. There are many poetic and literary ways to describe this very popular and successful piece of literature, which was written for those who adore books, stories and bookstores. This ‘’book about books’’ as it is often called, has more than one theme as most books do, but of course, the narrative evolves and revolves around the main character A. J. Fikry. A. J. Fikry is a classically compelling anti-hero who’s transformation will appeal to any book lover and reader who witnesses it. The story is about a 39 year old, independent bookstore owner in Alice Island, a fictional little town off the coast of Massachusetts. It’s been two years since his wife passed away; his bookstore has had one of the worst years ever financially and to top it off, his prized possession, a rare first edition of Edgar A. Poe’s poetry collection, Tamerlane, has been stolen. We could describe him as a bit lonely and snobbish when it comes to books, maybe even intellectually vain, old fashioned and to be honest; there are easier people to get along with.
This alone is not the basis for much of a story but his life is about to change, and he will discover that, as we lose things and learn to deal with that loss, other things take their place… if we let them. So when a mysterious package finds its way to his bookstore, our story begins and Mr. Fikry gets a chance of another life.

I'd seen the movie version and found it endearing. A friend who'd read the book, told me the book was much better, nothing new. She lent it to me and I found it equally as endearing. Now I have to go back and see the movie again to see where they deviate from each other.
When asked how I'm doing, I most often reply that "there's always room for improvement" and this book reinforces that idea. One never knows what awaits around the corner and one will never find out if one doesn't take the chance to take the path less travelled or the courage to break away from our daily routines.
If you like to read books about books, bookstores, and bibliophiles, read this novel. It’s a wonderful read, much like The Book List. I don’t want to spoil the ending for you, but I’m thankful the author wrote beyond sadness and allowed my imagination to jump into newness and hope.
Character development of A.J., his family, friends and fellow book lovers was thought provoking! Couldn’t put it down!!! The book suggestions connecting to life were a perfect segue way to each section!!! Hope to read Zevin again soon!
It’s truly a gem. A lovely story for readers, writers, dreamers and those who love to wander the isles of bookstores. It shall remain part of my permanent collection.
