I am grateful to have won a copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I am donating my copy to the library where I work.
This is an excellent resource for encouraging bilingualism young. Simple phrases are given in each language that are important conversationally and for the season, Autumn, which the book highlights. I would be happy to read more from this author, especially for more seasons!
Autumn/En Otoño follows a pattern on every page. The repetition is comforting and appealing to young children. The book covers common Autumn experiences and makes them all sound fun for children. I like that it started with leaves and encouraged children to play in them. Bi-lingual Spanish books are very helpful in many preschool classes in our area with over fifty percent of the children having Spanish as their first language. The bright colored pictures are appealing too.
I want to thank Susana Madinabeitia Manso, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for board book copy of In Autumn/En Otoño I won in the Giveaway.
Crisp color photographs show an Asian-American little girl enjoying some of the things you might typically find in the fall in this sturdy board book. Leaves, pumpkins, squirrels, apples, the wind...each is accompanied by a declarative sentence and then an "I" sentence followed by a question for the reader designed to elicit an action. Even better, the book is bilingual--written in both English and Spanish. Clearly it is designed for sharing, and young children will giggle, and enjoy the chance to participate, and not only in autumn.
This was a fun children's spanish/english board book. The book reminded me of some of the picture books I read growing up in the 70's. It has a retro feel - in a good way. I enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone raising their children to be bilingual or just wanting to encourage them to be open to the possibility. I have already passed it on to one of my friends who is doing just that.
This is an excellent board book which engages the child with questions about autumn: Can you blow like the wind? Can you climb like a squirrel? Can you fall like a leaf? Pictures are realistic, colorful and appropriate for the season. I received a copy from Goodreads for review which is going to be donated to a local library servicing a growing bilingual community.
I love bilingual books and interactive books, and this book is both! It describes an aspect of fall, then asks the reader if they can behave like the fall item, eg smile like a pumpkin. The real-life photos of the items of the items and the little girl are very engaging. It's the perfect length and perfect repeating structure.
Really cute book that takes common fall things and turns them into actions that little readers can try to emulate - fall like a leaf, smile like a pumpkin, etc.
