Variously described as #1, #2, or #3 in this series; the other “contenders” for the premiere outing of Lennox Kemp are basically out of print and largely impossible to find, so let’s just say this is the first of this series you can read…
Lennox Kemp is a disbarred lawyer currently working as an investigator for McCready’s Detective Agency. On a slow and boring morning a Mrs. Moss shows up at his desk, saying that her husband is missing and she wants Kemp to find him. Her story is a bit “off” and she has no money but she offers a large and beautiful emerald in a gold setting as a retainer. It’s most unusual, but Kemp takes on the case in an effort to shake his sense of ennui; things begin going in strange directions quite quickly, and then Mr. Moss pops up and the couple act as if there never was anything there. Kemp returns the retainer, but he knows there’s more to the story, and curiosity, they say…
It isn’t long before his personal investigation of things leads to both unusual developments as well as a number of people who really don’t want him looking into this. It’s a bit of an oddball plot, and it’s got a few thin patches, but it does hold one’s interest, I look forward to my next visit with Kemp.

Nice mystery. Two murders, not nearly as violent-seeming as stuff written today.
