3☆ A story of inheritance

I'm not to sure where to start, i didn't dislike 'The Inheritance' but I also wasn't bowled over by it.

The concept of the story is a great idea, however it just lacked the finesse.

Ashley's father passes away. He leaves her their house on one condition... James moves in with her for one year.

Ashley's father gave James he's business. Instead of Ashley.
James is a pastry chef and more suited to the job.
Ashley was angered by this and fell out with her father.
So when they are forced to live together it makes matters a whole lot worse.

Ashley grated on me. Ok I understand James is the last person she wanted to live with but her attitude and constant whining drove me crazy.

Instead of trying to make the best of a bad situation she just couldn't.

All the while this tension and anger is going on, Ashley and James have a romantic connection, a spark. Or should I say in my eyes, a love hate relationship.

Overall I feel this story has got the potential to be really good. I like the concept of the story. It just lacked character and enchantment. I think this could have a lot to do with how I felt about Ashley the main character.

Would I recommend this book....i would say give it a try.
What is one person's taste isn't always another's, vice versa.

Upon reading the description I was excited to dive into a cute book that I could thoroughly enjoy, however, I was really disappointed with this one.

The story is based around Ashley who is 24 and returning home from college and anticipating that she will be taking over Morgan & Hall, her fathers company. Over dinner Ashley finds out that Jamie, who is one of her fathers best employees will instead be taking over which causes Ashley to storm out. Fast forward 3 years and Ashley's father passes away, the will her father left states that in order for her to have a share in the company and to keep the apartment her and Jamie will not only have to work together, but also live together for an entire year.

I wanted to like this book, I really did and I got through more than 50% of the book before I really started skimming through the rest. Ashley is the most annoying character I could probably ever think of. I could have understood a spoiled girl but she's like this THE WHOLE BOOK. All Ashley does is whine and complain and never takes responsibility for anything. Jamie was not so bad at first but as the book continued on he became just as annoying.

I must also point out that if Jamie really had 110 degree fever he would be a lot worse than just suffering a little cold.

Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for my copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Bitter and sweet is balance.

Will Ashley and Jaime ever find the balance they need to work out the relationship her father expected them to have?

Ashley Morgan set aside her dreams, her passion for books (because duh?! Who doesn't love books right?) and work for one of those publishers where celebrity writers are invited to give talks. Instead, she studied Economics which is one of the tedious discipline in her university to take over the family business, the biggest, most important sweet-producing factory in the city — Morgan and Hall. At least that's what she knew. But the night she went to dinner with his father for the important announcement, she didn't expect the unexpected. While Jamie Standley was his father's trusted right hand and business partner, she didn't doubt herself. She never anticipated that her father will choose Jamie over him as a successor. Anyway, it is a family business and he has nothing to do with them.

She was overwhelmed and mostly felt betrayal thinking that Jamie went behind her back, pulling poor tricks to charm and brainwash his father to choose him to be the head of the business. Shocked as she was, that very night, Ashley walked out and never looked back. Until, three years after, her dad died leaving the two of them the will of the century. And that's where all the fun began.

This is quite an enjoyable read. What I really like about the story is it was really funny and sweet. I thought of Nathan's character as genius. Though he was just present at the beginning of the story, I can say he is my favorite character. Ashley and Jamie didn't have any way out of the will and I think Nathan did that on purpose to mend their relationship and maybe to put the two person he loves romantically?

While I felt for Ashley more times than I think I should, her bitterness toward Jaime and her obsession that everything was his fault seems like over the top. I dislike her sometimes with all the complaining and self denial going on, I really did like to give her a good slap or maybe throw a bucket of cold water for her to realize what she was missing. That's where Jamie's sweet and charming personality made a right kick and balance to the story. Plus, he's a handsome, experienced pastry chef — almond chocolate, min-flavored chocolate and blueberry chocolate — they're just sensational and delicious.

I knew that this I-hate-him-so-much kind of story was never new to me. Still, I have manage to see the good and positive side of it but I'd love to see more of the connection the characters can possibly pull from each other or maybe adding a few more characters that could help on the development of our main. Over all, I enjoyed it a lot. As I read the acknowledgement, the author herself admitted that there is a need of explaining about our protagonist's "sunk-cost heuristic". Then I fully understand and realize that we could be like her sometimes, obsessing on spending our precious years feeling negative instead of giving in to the fact that we are wrong all along.

This advanced read was provided to me by Netgalley for an honest review.

1.5 star rating.

This book was simply a fail. Honestly ... the synopsis sounded cute; Ashley's father owns a candy company, she thinks she's going to join the family business and he surprises her by bringing in someone else, Jamie (who's a pastry chef/candy maker). Skip forward three years later, Ashley has barely spoken to her father and he dies, leaving a condition in his will: Ashley will only inherit her beloved apartment (the one she lived in with her father prior to their estrangement) if she lives there with Jamie for one year. He will only inherit the company if he works with Ashley for one year. Decent plot right?

It could have gone so well - instead we are forced to listen to a juvenile narrator, Ashley as she spends her time: annoyed with Jamie for being nice to her, bemoaning the fact that she doesn't get to sit on "her favourite sofa" and enjoy "relaxing on a Sunday" -both of which are now impossible because Jamie is living in her space. He meanwhile makes her dinner and breakfast, demonstrates that he has feelings for her beyond a business-partner. There is absolutely NO sexual tension - which is what the author attempted to create. The story stays stagnant and the writing seems to be all over the place.

I dislike giving negative reviews because it takes guts to write book, much less write it and get it published and put it out there for the public at large. However I found this book tedious. Often I can find a redeeming quality, but this really fell flat.

I'm sorry.

This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

1.5 stars.

I requested "The Inheritance" by Angie Coleman on NetGalley because a) the cover is cute and I am a sucker for such lovely, sweet covers and b) because even though the synopsis didn't sound very original, it still was good and promised a few giggles. You can also read on the cover that it's going to be a feisty, giggle - inducing romance. Guys, I am so, so sorry but this book was nothing like that.

My problems started already at the beginning with the main character Ashley. From the very first word you could see she's spoiled and childish and she stayed like this for the whole, full of clichés, story. Used to getting everything she wanted in her life, at the first "no" she throws a tantrum bigger than a tsunami, feeling offended with everything and everybody and stops talking to her father, but when he dies three years later she expects she's going to inherit his apartment and money (because she doesn't have money and a place to live *haven't expected this, never. Sigh*). Enter Jamie, a pastry chef and candy maker, who, instead of Ashley, has been chosen to run Ashley's father's company (hence Ashley being so offended). Fast forward three years, Ashley's father is dead, and there is a condition in his will: to inherit apartment, Ashley has to live together with Jamie for twelve months. Jamie will only inherit the company if he works together with Ashley for a year.

Yes, guys. That's the plot. It is to swallow, and it could be a really funny rom - com. But believe me, the characters are - sadly - even worst than the plot. They were both like fifteen years old teenagers, both moaning about each other, hating each other, Ashley behaving in the worst possible way and stating "you don't know who you're messin' with", sending messages from Jamie's mobile, this kind of thing, then the woman from the law firm who were supposed to visit them and see if they work together (huh??? I mean, how???? How can you be sure that they are really going along?), Ashley forbad Jamie to watch TV and basically to use any other room in the apartment than his and Jamie fell into line, but in the meantime cooked for Ashley and tried to persuade her that she's in love with him. There was NO connection between those two characters, no sparkles, no chemistry, let's forget about any tension that should somehow indicate there is a teeny tiny sign of a sparkle... I also couldn't see any history between those two, they got to know each other some time ago but there was nothing indicating they had feelings to each other.

I am truly sad that I feel like that about this book, I wanted to like it so much but I can't change my feelings. I also decided to write this review because I managed to finish this book - skim reading, that's it, but I managed. I just couldn't keep up with the characters, the way they behaved, Ashley knowing everything best in the world, also about who her friends should be meeting, Jamie once giving no damn about Ashley and in the next second following her because she has a date. This romance was so unbelievable and didn't work, the writing seemed so disconnected and yes, the idea was there, the potential was there but they weren't delivered. However, please try this story for yourself, you may find yourself falling in love with it.

Not good

Rating: 2.5 Tried Stars!

The cover, is cute. It still needs a bit of editing, I know is an ARC, so just polish it.

The story, if you don’t like people complaining about a book, STOP , because I am going to complain, usually I love every book, it pains me to do this. I liked what the author was trying to do, two people have to live together in order to inherit, and I guess the deceased wanted them together, to fall in love, I get it, it’s cute, the problem was, I was annoyed 90% of the time with the characters. First, Ashley throws a temper tantrum when she doesn’t get the company, she destroys her father’s gift and runs out, we don’t know the reasoning behind her father’s decision, and we just know she didn’t like it, at all. Fast forward 3 years, her father is dead, and in order to get the apartment she has to live with Jamie, the guy who stole her company. Most of the time I felt that I was watching a pair of 12 year olds pretending to be adults. Throwing temper tantrums and not just from her, one minute he is the devil, the next he is the most amazing man in the world. I just couldn’t keep up and it annoyed me to no end. How did Jamie fell in love? They spent apart 3 years and before that she tells us that while she was in college she didn’t see him much and trust me, being roommate with her, I don’t think he could have fallen in love with her, she was extremely annoying. Oh, and her friend Elly, what a nosy little woman, I get that she wanted her friend to face her fears and more, but the way she did it, at some point I just had to yell at the book, “please shut up, just stop bothering her!”, she made me think of a 9 year old. No cliffhanger, thankfully.

The romance, pfff..i didn’t believe it.

Ashley, 12 year old with temper tantrum syndrome and annoying.

Jamie, 12 year old, that’s it.

Overall, did I like the book? I wanted so much to like it, the idea was great, but it just wasn’t done well. Would I recommend the book? I don’t know, maybe, I guess you could try it and see for yourself.

As soon as I read the description for this book I knew I had to read it, it sounded fun and light hearted which I was just in the mood for. So what did I think...

I'm going to start with the characters namely Ashley as I think she falls firmly into the marmite category. She could be a little infuriating at times but it definitely made her an entertaining character! I think that even though she isn't a 100% likeable this doesn't impact on the story too much. I like to see characters have flaws and let's be honest Ashley does have them. I did however love the sparring and fireworks that went off whenever Ashley and Jamie started arguing.

The plot is easy to digest and there is no complicated story so it's easy to sit back and relax with. I managed to whip through this book very quickly. It's the perfect book to sink into and just enjoy the characters fun and entertaining lives. There were some funny moments throughout and this definitely helped keep things light.

Fun and light hearted!

Thank you to Aria Fiction & Netgalley for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Ashley seems totally convinced that her father will ask her to take over his business. By ‘totally convinced’ I mean extremely cocky. Up until the very last moment, she believes that that job will be hers. Soooooo, I’m sure you can guess her surprise when her father DOESN’T give her the job.

Now, instead of having her moment of frustration and annoyance and just getting on with it, Ashley decides to cut all ties with her father. Then one day, Ashley comes face to face with the man who got the job and learns that both of them will have to live under the same roof as each other, for one whole year – all in the name of ‘inheritance money’.

Whilst this novel only took me a couple of hours to read, there were multiple moments where I just wanted to put the book down due to Ashley’s whining and constant tantrums. An adult having tantrums is really not a pretty sight. I could see WHY Ashley was frustrated at the start, don’t get me wrong, BUT, I couldn’t understand why she just had to throw her teddy out the pram ALL THE TIME!!! She seemed to find a problem with everything and anything; pardon my bluntness but I couldn’t stand her.

Jamie on the other hand (the man who got the job over her), seemed to have more likeable traits than Ashley, and he came across as quite a fun character. His humour was brilliant, and the amount of patience he has is absolutely incredible. For me, Jamie was the one that gave the storyline the sustenance, the likability factor, as well as managing to keep the storyline above water.

The love hate relationship between Ashley and Jamie was somewhat predictable, yet at times it was quite entertaining to read. During those moments was when I saw little snippets of Ashley’s personality that I actually liked; she was being nice, I just wish she showed more of that side of her personality.

Did I love this book? No, I didn’t. I liked the overall concept of the storyline and I really do think that it has a lot of promise.

Did I hate this book? Oddly enough, no, I didn’t. I was entertained, it was pleasant enough to read. For me, Ashley’s character is what let the book down. She really isn’t likeable, she seemed to annoy me more than anything else and I just couldn’t get over how ugly her tantrums were.

All in all ‘The Inheritance’ was pleasant, entertaining to a point, with an incredibly promising concept to the storyline.

Thanks Aria.

2.5/5

Twenty four year old Ashley Morgan, I’m sorry to say, acted more like a four year old. I really wanted to like this book and I was highly disappointed, by the characters mainly. The book opens with Ashley meeting her father and Jamie. When her father announces that Jamie is going to inherit the family business, even though he is not family, Ashley is furious. So she throws a temper tantrum like a little kid. And she doesn’t talk to her father or Jamie, for the next three years, until her father’s death. Granted, I don’t think her father went about telling her in the right way- this was a family business and she’d even taken a business degree in college. But she’s twenty four for crying out loud!

The book skips to three years later and, to be completely honest, she’s just as immature, if not more. Her father’s will instructs them to live together for a year. She is rude and horrible to Jamie basically all the time and really, I felt so bad for him. Numerous time does he cook for her and she’s never appreciative. All she complains about is how he’s in her apartment, sitting on her “favourite sofa” and really, she’s just a plain pain in the ass.

I felt no connection to these characters and the romance was so lacking. I didn’t understand how either of them liked each other and how that could possibly developed into love. There was no buzzing tension, no will they, won’t they… there was nothing that made me believe in the relationship between these two characters.

As for the plot, it had so much potential. Really, that’s what disappoints me the most- this book had so much potential. I expected them to begin tip toeing around each other. I expected there to be undeniable chemistry and scorching hot sexual tension. I, unfortunately, never got that.

Sadly, as much as I wanted to enjoy this, I found myself not even wanting to get to the end of it because I just didn’t care. I didn’t care about anything, not the characters, not the plot and what I always enjoy the most but didn’t this time, the relationship.

I would be willing to read more by this author if her following work interested me. But if her characters are similarly developed, I just don’t think this author is for me.

Oh I feel bad for writing a bad review, but I was so disappointed with this book.

I usually don’t mind when a book is not exactly what I was hoping for, or not greatly written - but this took the cake. The plot is a nice idea, and even the characters. But it was just lacking. It also didn’t feel put together, like there were a lot of good ideas but the execution just lacked.

Ashley relationships were all a bit weird, and how come a great with like Alex wouldn’t know where she worked?

Some sentences were also repeated, and I couldn’t actually grasp the personality of Ashley or who she was. Which made it hard to connect to her, and let me to just finding her extremely annoying.

There is also no build up for the characters and I cannot describe it more than just being weird.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. This is my review. I have to say the first thing that drew me to this novel other than the synopsis was how cute and colourful this cover is....and who doesn't have a sweet spot for candy. I'd honestly give this novel a 2.75 out of 5 stars. The main reason my rating is so low for this particular novel is because the main character Ashley is very hard to empathize with. She is very spoiled, and stubborn...and is just a character that I was rooting against. The main parts of this novel I really enjoyed was the strained father/daughter relationship (I wish there was just a bit more focus on this in the beginning portion of this novel). As well as her love for books and working in this classic, busy book store. My absolute favourite part of this novel was the character Jamie. He cooks, he's sweet and kind...romantic...like literally the perfect man. And to have him paired with such a bratty character who only really cares and thinks of herself was where the novel fell apart for me unfortunately. I'm very happy I read this novel, Jamie definitely made this book and so did Elly the best friend.

Throughly disappointed in this book. Ashley was one of the most frustrating and annoying characters I have read. Jamie was rather bland but way more likeable than Ashley.

The premise of this story looked extremely fun and the writer had some good flow and dialogue in parts of the story, but it all fell flat for 90% of this book.

Couldn’t even get past the second chapter. I wanted a cute, mindless romance and instead I got everything I despise about first person narration and an incredibly, incredibly irritating MC. Please grow up, Ashley.

Ashley Morgan has a crush on Jamie, the handsome pastry chef who works for her family company. But when her father chooses Jamie as his successor instead of her, not only her relationship with her father changes but also her feelings for Jamie. A few years later, her father dies leaving the company to Jamie and his house to Ashley but on condition that they live and work together for a year and Ashley is decisively not happy about the forced cohabitation and she has to struggle with her confused feelings for Jamie. I found Ashley childish and spoiled and strangely obsessed with a sofa on which she doesn't want Jamie to sit. Although the story is repetitive and the main character is annoying, all in all, the novel is interesting and romantic, the perfect storyline for a romcom movie.

Angie Morgan thinks her life is mapped out and she will inherit her fathers business - but he hands the running of it over to Jamie his pastry chef and she is devastated and cuts off all ties. Three years later her father dies and stipulates in his will that she will only inherit his home if she lives and works with Jamie for a year.

Angie is furious about this and really resents Jamie and so is certainly not going to make life easy for him living together - although he makes it clear that he cares about her and wants to make it work.

I liked the concept of the story but I think the main character Angie was made too unlikeable for the story to really take off - you ended up just wanting to slap her rather than rooting for her and so didn't care what happened to her

I found the character of Ashley very childish & annoying & I felt zero chemistry between her & Jamie. I skimmed past a lot of the pages as the story just didn't hold my interest.

Sorry but not my cup of tea
