An anthology of short thrillers, chillers, mysteries and tales with a twist by Occult Horror Author, Sarah England. Most of the stories in this collection have been previously published, and form the basis of S. E. England's earlier work writing short stories and serials for magazines. While few are in the same terrifying vein as her bestselling, occult horror trilogy, 'Father of Lies,' most have a supernatural or medical theme to them, something which usually creeps into Sarah's stories. From the female detective with a murder case just a little too close to home, to the angry sales reps dabbling with online retribution, there are plenty of spooky stories here for you to dip in and out of. Recommend reading by lamplight during the Witching Hour for best effect... 1. Out of the Woods 2. Someone out There: parts 1-3 3. Rough Love 4. Cold Melon Tart 5. The Witching Hour 6. Girl in the Rain 7. Last Bus Home 8. The Midnight People 9. Buried too Deep: parts 1-3 10. Headache 11. A Second Opinion 12. Retribution 13. Moving In 14. Masquerade 15. Adele 16. Night Duty 17. Rosie and Joe 18. Sixty Seconds 19. House Hunt 20. The Witchfinders
This author is one of my favourites but this collection of stories did not even raise my pulse. So disappointed. I am sure other readers will enjoy it more just not for me.
Again, the author displays her talent at making readers terrified and fearing the dark, but in a collection of short stories instead of a full length novel. Ghosts, demons, multiple personalities and other dark delights are within these pages, and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
I picked this up thinking I'd read a couple of the stories at a time, but the next story just had to be read until they were all read. If you like giving yourself a scare, pick up this fantastic collection of spooky shorts!
I enjoyed a few of these stories, mostly those of a supernatural nature. However, the majority, although well written, left me cold. Perhaps I just couldn't tune in to this author's wavelength, but don't let me stop anyone from trying this book.
This is a superb collection of short stories. The author puts a spooky spin on real-life situations & pulls it off incredibly well. From traditional ghosts to malevolent thoughts, each tale is expertly crafted & well-written, leaving the final paragraph to deliver a punch each time. England is a master storyteller but this book does need a good proofread, slightly annoying but more a publishing error than the author’s fault.
As with any short-story collection there is varying quality. The author is best when she eschews supernatural horror and concentrates on the horror of the everyday - The story Rough Love is a case in point. Nevertheless there are some delightful twists and deft touches of humour, which made the overall reading experience enjoyable.
All of these short stories would have been great as full length books. Enjoyed reading all of them Definitely a great show of all things that would make you think of those things that go bump in the night. A great mixture of different subjects that will keep you reading.
These are a collection of stories Sarah's sold to other magazines and each is chilling and eerie in its own right. Her way of twisting the story so that you get a different ending to the one you expected is pure gold. I love everything she's written no one can scare me quite like Sarah England
An great collection of short stories by Sarah England. In here you will find among others, witches, ghosts and the short story which the prologue of Father of Lies was based on. This is a collection of well written stories you can dip in and out of. Recommended.
