Я читал эти письма, или первые семьдесят страниц, в моем первом NeH семинара в Принстоне в 1978 году я любил тот факт, что он получил лучшие оценки, в подготовительную школу, в военной науке, чем в русском языке.
I read these in Russian at Princeton's Firestone Library (Robinson classification system) in the summer of 1978, in an NEH seminar with the great Larry L Lipking, comparative literature. Wonderful that Dostoevsky, in his military prep school, received a higher grade in military studies than in Russian. He had been prepared to help the Czar dissuade revolution--and found himself the dissuaded.
He was as a young man like Napoleon, a master of military strategy, later deployed in novel plots. Also, like the young James Joyce in Rome and Trieste, he was ranked lower in his own language than in other studies.
