Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book.
I've always been more of a pragmatist than the artsy type. As long as an object fulfills its purpose, I'm a happy girl. However, lately I've been trying to add some more flair to my surroundings - I turned my balcony into a jungle, I painted my walls and even added a few framed pictures here and there. I browsed Pinterest in search of a few decoration ideas and even tried a few of those things, most of which I failed at miserably. So of course I jumped at the chance to have a look at an entire collection of ideas how to visually improve my apartment and maybe even optimize my organization in the process.
However, the majority of the projects depicted in this book are rather girly and gaudy, and while I would have loved them ten to fifteen years ago, I feel like I'm too old now to appreciate those things. Still, I think that Wutschke did a bang-up job of gathering cute and easily realizable DIY ideas (that you may or may not have already come across on Pinterest) to decorate your living space. The book has a cute style, the instructions are clear and comprehensible, and she even gives advice on how to tidy out and organize.

Room Love: 50 DIY Projects to Design Your Space is aimed at the Middle Grade age group, pre-teens and older. These projects are easy enough that these could be done by ages 8-10 and up; some might need more supervision than others. There are ideas / projects for organizing, making over existing furniture, choosing the best fabrics for the project, curtains, stenciling, and more. While this appears to be aimed more toward girls, simple changes could turn some of these ideas into a more “boyish” style, depending on what your child prefers. Not all girls love pink and purple and glittery things, and not all boys avoid them, so I would look at these more as “ideas” than projects set in stone.
Supplies include such things as photos, printed pictures, fabric scraps, scrapbook paper, paint swatches, quotes and more.
Steps are also included which boil down to:
Research for ideas – photos, printed pictures, fabric scraps etc.
Arrange it Together
Create an Inspiration Board
Of course, as everyone knows, should know, the best way to accomplish the look you want is to remove those items that don’t add to the look you’re going for.
Included are steps to make a mock-up of the room, using paper for pieces of furniture and place them, rearranging them, to find the best arrangement for the space.
Then there are pages of furniture “makeovers,” a dresser repainted using stencils, a “Furry Kitty Desk Chair,” a bookcase painted and framed with brightly patterned paper and washi tape. There are ideas for bedding, hand painted pillows, a “boho” bed skirt, and a faux canopy. Organization “stations:” drawer dividers, a special framed sunglass / eyeglasses holder, a nail polish display case, a hair accessory holder, earring holder, jewelry hangar, more hanging storage, a magnetic make-up board and a “treasure box” and a charging station.
There’s more. There’s a lot more, actually. There’s a whole section on the “Dressing Zone” another on “Walls” (I loved the Quote Wall) Accent Walls, making Floral Monograms, the Confetti Wall is one I’ve seen used on home renovation shows. A framed “Mantra,” a “Gallery Wall” how to make a “Dry Erase Calendar” out of poster board and washi tape. And more.
What every parent hopes will come out of this: their child to have a sense of what is theirs, to have pride in it and want to keep it looking nice and new. And every child, excuse me, (almost) teenager wants is a room that represents them, that says this is who I am, what I love. Essentially: This is Me. To have that sense of ownership that helps to keep them organized; wanting things to look the way they designed them to look.
My biggest disappointment with this book is that it won’t be published until after the end of summer, when school will be starting for the very age group at which it is aimed.

I just love DIY, I love making my space even more pretty than it already is. These days it is much less since I got a whole apartment, but back when I had just one room I loved making it even more beautiful and more fun to be in.
There are some projects that I would love to do, and probably will be doing. Like the covering of a closet door, my closet is white, plus has some dents and bumps, so I would like to cover those. Or dressing up my cabinets with washi tape (everyone seems to be hyped about that stuff). Also the stencilling of my dressers or doors. <3 I can’t wait to try it out.
Not all projects were to my liking, and some just seemed to be the same project only then used for something different. Like the nail polish, the calendar, the sunglasses projects. And then there were some that just looked like someone didn’t do much effort (the disco ball).
Plus I had a little snicker when I saw those fairy lights and that they formed a word. It reminded me of a scene or two in Stranger Things. :P
But all in all, I just loved the projects, and I would highly recommend it to everyone who wants to do some DIY and needs some ideas. Most of the projects are fairly easy to do, and you can easily find the stuff needed for them. The photographs are clear and sharp, and the instructions are easy to follow and explain everything clearly.
I am always looking for ways to improve the spaces in my house, and Room Love has quite a few inexpensive little ideas that are fun DIY projects. Many of the ideas are geared towards tweens, however there are some great organizational tips that can be useful to anyone. If you have some washi tape, scrapbook paper and acrylic paint on hand, you are well on your way to get started on many of Wutschke’s projects.
I have recently begun to organize my bookshelves and I was really inspired by the washi tape embellishment idea in Room Love. What is so great about washi tape is its versatility and the ability to remove it easily if needed. I never considered using it in my decorating before, and it is such a fun idea!
The layout of this DIY book is so pretty and has lots of pictures with step-by-step directions that can be followed with ease. It is one that will appeal to pre-teens that are wanting to jazz up their space a little bit without having to purchase expensive supplies. It is a definite gift for the tween DIYers on your list!
My new favorite book: Room love by Heather Wutschke! I am using half of these ideas for my room! Its filled with cool do it yourself ideas and projects! Its perfect if you want to change your room but just don't have the right ideas. I've been wanting to change my room, and when I found room love, I totally fell in love with the projects and ideas for making your room into a masterpiece! I want to thank NetGalley for this book. I would've never found this book and my room would still be it's plain old self. Five Stars!!!
This is the perfect DYI book for any young middle-school girl who is tried the the room she is living in. This book has very cute and fun ways to make your room look brighter and less cookie cutter. And the nice thing is that all the ways given to do this aren't that hard or that expensive.
Some are a bit on the cutesy overboard side, but then I am no longer a teenage girl, but I would have loved to have some of these ideas to work from. There are even tips on how to redo what you did if your mood changes. These are the sorts of projects you might see in Pinterest or Etsy, fun, cute, and just a little bit bright. It is nice to have the ideas all in one place.
This is a great book for a library to have, or in a home. Easy to follow directions, and great pictures to show how it might look along the way and when it is finished.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
this book has so many great ideas and easy to follow photos, that any young teen will be able to follow I was sent this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Room Love is filled with lots of fun DIY projects for teens and adults alike. Included with the crystal clear photographs for each project are a comprehensive list of materials needed and step by step guides to accomplish each project.
This book is a great addition to the library of a budding crafty person and hobbiest, however, I do believe it should be aimed at older teens and the like.
I jumped at the chance to (hopefully) get a review copy. My niece is very crafty and likes to make and build her own stuff before even thinking about wanting to buy furniture/items/etc. So, while she is a year or two too young for the targeted age group for Room Love (which is 9 - 13), I thought maybe I could rehash some ideas for her.
The only one I could probably do with her is the Treasure Box one, which is pretty simple. Get a large shoe box (or any type of box really), decorate it how you want, and ta-da, a treasure box for all her birthday cards, rocks, or whatever she'd like. Also, the pretty charging station looks like a great gift idea to make for her mom or grandma (or whoever).
One thing I didn't like (or really found fault with) was the inclusion of a dream catcher "craft". Dream catchers are cultural items that aren't necessarily easy (or even okay) to commercialize and "do-it-yourself".
Overall, I liked Room Love. The layout is clean, simple, and yet offers enough colors and patterns to inspire the crafter within me. I also appreciate the "get parental approval first" labels on some projects (don't want those budding crafters going off with the glue-gun quite yet). Room Love would be a great addition to any crafter's (and inspiring crafter's) library, even more so if the dream catcher craft was removed from the book.
A great step-by-step guide aimed at teens and tweens who would like to personalize their bedroom. Yes, the book is meant for older kids, but it is so full of modern and gorgeous color schemes that people of all ages will be inspired to tackle their boring walls and windows. It is a perfect book for younger 20-somethings, living on a shoestring budget, yet still desiring a little panache in their space. I happen to have a daughter who falls into that category and she fell in love with the dresser makeover. The directions are super easy to follow and even include helpful hints for the unfortunately less crafty among us.
The book is chock full of storage ideas and decluttering techniques. One glance through the beautiful photos and you will be itching to rehab that boring old desk chair into a furry, whimsical kitty! Adorable ideas and projects abound in this lovely book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this upcoming book and express my honest opinions.
received this from Netgalley in excharge for an honest review.
This is the perfect guide for DIY projects, not only for teens, but for everyone that loves DIYs. I found the book really good and well put together. The pictures and the DIYs are amazingly simple. Everyone can do it! There are some tips and small texts inside it. It almost feels like a magazine but in a good way. That is why I think this is the perfect guide for simple DIYs.
his book is beautifully put together and features a cute colour spectrum of white, pink and sky blue colours as it's main palette as well as using an array of graphics to help images and text stand out.
The layout is clear to read the steps on plain white background with black type telling us our supplies and then the project photos are backed onto funky designs instead to draw us in to looking at the examples to follow.
I studied textiles in school and this book reminds me of projects we found in books then only in here, they show and tell you clearer steps, there is an example mood board to follow as well. It features easy DIY's for things such as, make-up holders, sunglasses organizers, earring holders, mirror and wardrobe up cycling, curtain ideas and more!
The book features a DIY for everything you may ever need in your bedroom and is perfect if you like crafts and Youtube or Pinterest projects. If you are in a plain room or just need to change things up, need a gift for someone crafty or a teen this is the book you need!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me a copy to review!
This is a really fun book filled with great ideas for decorating one's bedroom (many projects will work in other rooms as well). I wish I had had this book when I was a teenager; I would have had so much fun using the ideas here to improve my surroundings! As an adult, there are still so many of these projects I want to do!
4.5 Stars! I really like this book! I got some really cute ideas that I plan to use on my room! It definitely is a book more for the pre-teen & teen aged girl! Still, there are a few ideas I'd like to do & I'm 30!! I think adults will like some of these DIY ideas too! It has lots of pictures & clear directions! Would be a great book to get for ideas for a mother/daughter DIY bedroom re-do project!! *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!*
This book is recommended for girls from 9 to 13 yr, and I think it does a good job in showing how to make some very easy and trendy accessories for the bedroom. Although I think some are more suitable for the lower end of the age scale; all very simple to make and easily altered if taste change. I know my granddaughter would love some of the ideas and I will help her make some for her room.
My new creative book for home and my school creative lessons. Room love by Heather Wutschke. What a beautiful and well illustrated DIY Projects to turn your bedroom, etc into a beautiful and peaceful place. A must for any girls or boys or even adult bedroom etc. This book is filled with brilliant DIY projects and are simple and very effect with easy to follow instructions especially to do for any age group. It is filled with wonderful photo's throughout the book. I love this book.Well. Done Heather Wutschke.
Room Love by Heather Wutschke is such an adorable DIY book to make any young girls room from drab to fab! While some projects need parental supervision or permission, most are easy to do for any pre-teen to teen. This book is filled with great ideas that will not break the bank for the parents either! I just loved the stencil pattern ideas for plain wood doors and drawers! With 50 projects to choose from, your teen will have plenty to do during her free time! And friends or parents can have fun helping too! Filled with beautiful pictures and easy how-to instructions, Room Love will not disappoint! Great for girls 10 and up!
This is a fun book for young girls who want to learn to DIY their spaces. Projects are well illustrated with color photos. The styles tend towards cutesy, fluffy, feminine and Bohemian, and are the kind of projects you see on decorating blogs but are designed for younger girls. Many will need some adult help.
this book is aimed at younger teens, and a lot of the DIY stuff is stuff i've seen on youtube, but it is a very adorable and aesthetically pleasing, cheerful book, and i'm sure your preteen relative would love it as a present.
I went straight to the book's description and missed that this fun DIY book is for 9-13 year olds. I think some of these crafts would work for that age range, but I think others would require parent assistance (and permission as the book states). I would honestly skew this age range a little higher if you want the results to turn out as well as the examples in the book! I don't think as an adult that I could paint a waterfaded flower as well as the author did on her pillow. Plus, picking up a heavy piece of furniture in order to dip the legs in paint is not something a kid can do on his/her own.
The book starts out in giving kids an idea of decluttering and organizing their room before they start planning a room design. I like the tips to use pieces of paper to lay out the bedroom. I'm not sure how effectively 9 to 13-year-olds understand scale, but I know every parent appreciates someone else telling their kids ways that they can keep their room cleaner.
As a 30-something-year-old, a lot of this book content isn't something I would want to imitate exactly, but it did inspire me to do something in a slightly more classy fashion. For example, the "Easy Peasy Earring Holder" (which is a wooden cross-stitch frame with a cloth insert) would look awesome in a modern bedroom if you painted the wood metallic silver and used a bold modern cloth to hang the earrings from. Likewise, the driftwood necklace holder painted a metallic silver or gold would also look fabulous. Even using a plain piece of driftwood could create a relaxing, natural look for your bedroom.
Another tip that I like is the painted shoebox organization idea. Although I would buy shoeboxes already in a color I like, I do appreciate the suggestion of taking a photo and taping it to the front of it. That's clever and certainly looks better than a haphazard collection of random shoe boxes in one's closet.
Overall, now knowing that this book is really for kids, I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars, which means I "liked it" using the Goodreads scale. As I said previously, I think the age range should be adjusted to a tad bit older. I appreciate the author's clear instructions that help kids take ownership of their room's look and feel. Some of the projects definitely look craftsy, which is fine for a youth. I dock one star because none of the projects blew me away with their originality. That's hard to do today though with Pinterest providing craft ideas. The cursive script is a tad hard to read--hopefully that is better with a hard copy of the book.
Thank you for the free Netgalley copy so that I could review the book!
Though it's ostensibly aimed at young girls (tweens-high school aged), I found some nice DIY ideas here which wouldn't be out of place in a grown up environment. Many of these were 'awesome' according to my 18 year old daughter.
The book is lavishly illustrated and the tutorials are full of easy-to-understand instructions. The book is arranged logically in sections with similar projects grouped together. The sections include: Furniture & Fabrics, Storage & Organization, Dressing Zone, Walls, and Glam Decor & More.
The projects run the gamut from practical to very whimsical (and a few are a bit silly, but everyone needs a little silly in their space, right?). I liked the advice posted at regular intervals in the book (*remember to get permission!). I also like the empowerment vibe in this book. You can do it. I am all for people doing more DIY and recycling instead of just ditching everything in a landfill. The book also starts with a welcome bit of advice to clean up your bedroom/space and organize.Awesome advice (I'm a mother :)
Definitely a useful and creative book. Recommended!
Four stars Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher.
This is the best DIY book I've ever read! Very fresh and modern techniques to decorate your space. Be it just a small touch up or a complete make-over, this book can help you with it all. Recommended for girls who love DIY. With this book, you can make your own beautiful Dream Catcher, fancy dressing table and even decorate your walls the easy way. A great book with easy and fun ideas! Thank you Netgalley.
Lots of fun, easy to follow ideas for decorating your room. I like the bright colorful pictures of the completed project and the photos with the how directions. Loved the cat chair, Pom Pom branches, fabric banner and more. Starts off the projects by telling you to ask your parents first, which is a great idea! Great book for girls looking to make their space their own and showing them the ways they can do it. .
In an age where you can look up hundreds of DIY tips and projects for free online, this book does a great job of proving that it can still be worth buying books. It's very well presented and highly stylised. Although it's aimed at teenage girls, there are fun and easy projects in here for everyone.
Fine book, skewed for teenage girls, with a fairly feminine slant. Not anything new here, though. Too bad it wasn't more unisex or even included some more traditionally masculine themes. Some projects could easily done without supervision but, I think, for best results, working with someone with creative experience would greatly improve the outcome.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me take a peek at this book! Cute ideas! I think teens and even those headed to college will enjoy flipping through for ideas! Easy to follow directions, bright photographs. Fun!
A lot of great suggestions! There are some great ideas as is or you can further embellish them to fit your room's needs. The color samples went really well together. There are tips, organization ideas that will make parents happy and kids will love. All around great ideas for all budgets.
Great ideas! Super easy to do projects! Photo's, along with detail's, makes it super easy for people who've NEVER "crafted" or created, before! You can take ANY idea and put it into your own design "twist". Even though I'm super crafty, this STILL was A fun, easy read, that taught me some tips!
