I'm a seasoned Witch and Wiccan, but I still like to read books on the subject. So I thought I'd get this series for my kindle. The price wasn't bad, but I think I could have found a better use for my 7 bucks. I found this book to be totally ridiculous. The author puts forth a lot of erroneous statements, even actually referring to Harry Potter, which we all know is FICTION. And oh my gosh - all over the book she says "if you don't do this, or don't that, use this thing, or don't use this thing, your spells will not work or they will go horribly wrong." The author also doesn't seem to know the difference between the religion called Wicca and the craft, the art of doing magic, which is called Witchcraft. All the reliance on 'must have' items, such as altar cloths, a 'balanced' number of candles on the altar, even clothing -- I came away from this series of 'books' with laughter. Certain clothing is absolutely required according to this author -- apparently she never heard of 'skyclad.' I like what another reviewer (on amazon) said - that this book comes away looking like a high school term paper. But in actuality, it sounds more like a 13 year old who copied and pasted a bunch of stuff off the internet.
In regards to all the 'must have' equipment -- did witches of 500 years ago have all that stuff? NO. The power of a witch is in herself. It's nice to have colored candles and a nice altar cloth - incense and all that stuff - but Deity doesn't care about that, and won't be 'offended' if you don't have a certain type of darned candle. You can certainly use all those tools if you like, it helps you consecrate on the task at hand, but as a witch's power grows, you find you don't need all that stuff.
This is an excellent book for beginners. I like that it provides an explanation for nearly every part of every concept and spell it outlines, and those explanations are easy to understand. Some explanations resonated more with me than others for sure, but I really appreciated knowing where the conjecture comes from (the author makes evil forces tagging along in your spells seem to be a lot more of an issue than I expected). The book in this format does repeat itself a bit, since it is 5 separate books combined into one, but I find that it's refreshing to have those reminders. There's a lot of information in here, and it's good to double-down on core concepts.
While it doesn't have as much lore as the books by Cunningham that are recommended for beginners, this was certainly an easier introduction. I'd recommend reading this before and in addition to Cunningham's books, despite the minor contradictions you'll find between the two writers.
Wildly variant views of the history of Wicca and an inability to label either Gardnerian or Alexandrian beliefs as what they are - they are forms of witchcraft, precursors to but not part of Wicca- compromise this writer's work. I also read a section of this book aloud to another person experienced in practice, who when I finished, asked if the author was 14.
Even if you are 14, don't read this book. It will only confuse you, and paint a picture of Wicca for you that you will spend decades correcting. Avoid at all costs.
I rarely write reviews, but I had to on this set of books. I couldn't finish it, because I couldn't take it seriously. I stopped when I came to the Book of Shadows portion and the author recommends only leather bound books, because regular notebooks can't hold your magic. Then she talks about casting an invisibility spell, like this is Harry Potter. There are some wonderful Wiccan books out there, full of great advice and helpful teachings. This is not one of them.
Really good set, would recommend to anyone starting out in the craft. Lots of useful information and background. Only thing it felt at times a bit judgemental regarding dark/grey witches, but even still a great read for any witch on any path.
