Andey Riley is geboren in 1970 te Aylesbury. Momenteel woont hij in Londen. Hij heeft al heel veel grappige dingen geschreven, zowel voor de televisie als voor films. Hij won er zelfs prijzen voor: BAFTA’s en een Emmy. Voor de televisie werkte Andy mee aan het scenario voor Oma Boef, De jongen in de jurk en Robbie het Rendier, allemaal van David Walliams. Hij heeft meegeschreven aan films als Gnomeo and Juliet en The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. Andy houdt heel erg van cowboyhoeden en kan geweldig goed FOE HOE HOE zeggen. Het boek gaat over Eddie. Eddie is geen gewone jongen. Hij is een koning, met een troon, en zijn eigen harnas, en een kasteel met geheime gangetjes en zo. O ja, en de gemeenste en meest kwaadaardige man van het universum is zijn buurman. Als Eddie te horen krijgt van de kluizenaar die in een hutje alleen in de woestenij van Crong woont, dat er een enorm eng monster is, die alle dieren opeet en alles stuk stampt. belooft hij om het beest in zijn eentje te doden. Keizer Nurbizoon (de kwaadaardige keizer) wil dat ook, maar je denkt toch niet dat hij het plan heeft om hem alleen te doden. Hij heeft een veel sluwer plannetje bedacht.
De cover is in mooi contrast. Koning Eddie met zwaard en schild in het geel en daarnaast een enorm groot stukje zwarte voet met 3 tenen. De illustraties zijn in grijstinten en ze zijn echt leuk en passen perfect bij het verhaal.
Dit boek is het tweede deel van de serie. Miguel en ik waren benieuwd of het tweede deel net zo leuk zou zijn als het eerste deel en dat is het zeker. (Lees de recensie over deel 1 ook als je nog meer wilt weten). Het leest vlot weg. De paar moeilijke woorden worden uitgelegd zoals steekspelen of lans. Het is avontuurlijk, spannend en grappig. En aan het einde is de mooie boodschap dat je niet alles alleen hoeft te doen, maar soms hulp echt nodig is. Gelukkig is er een deel 3 uitgekomen, want we willen meer van koning Eddie. Dit boek zou je kunnen voorlezen vanaf een jaar of 6 en zelf lezen vanaf 8 jaar. Ik en mijn dochter van 13 jaar vinden deze serie ook erg leuk, dus het is eigenlijk voor jong en oud.

Dit was weer een heerlijk verhaal! Lekker veel fourth wall sloperijen, een quest op zoek naar een monster (de VELLEK!), een slechte keizer (die strontvervelend is en maar eens mag oprotten), en meer.
Vanwege de keizer geef ik dit boek wel een sterretje minder. Sorry, ik vind het niet erg om via Eddie's POV te lezen over de keizer, maar ik hoef geen stukjes met de man zelf. Wat een kwal. Hij heeft het zeker verdiend wat er met hem gebeurde aan het einde en ik lag dus zeker dubbel.
En ik blijf ook bij wat ik zei in de review van het vorige boek, moet je nou echt namen vertalen? In deze tijd en eeuw waar mensen kinderen namen geven als Chukwukadibie of Fyra dan moet een Engelse naam toch gewoon kunnen?
De quest was ook erg leuk, en ik moest wel lachen om Nanda die dus steeds een nieuw couplet schreef over iets randoms in de quest. :P
Ik kan niet wachten op het volgende verhaal!

Not funny and quite frankly not able to keep me invested in the action. Too much imagination probably and a lack of glue between scenes made it feel that I was just bouncing around the author'!s brain from one idea to the next.

I had a good time reading this. There was an actual lesson and it was actually pretty funny. This could easily work as a kids cartoon because it hits the same beats.

Funny and entertaining, a very quick read. Great illustrations and just overall goofiness. It didn't really matter that I read the second book first (I didn't realize it was a sequel until I brought it home). 15/30 #30booksummer #3rdgraderead #4thgraderead

I never know about these kind of books. It seems to me that it would be more funny to an adult than to the child. So much fun wordplay and critique towards society. And I find the monster to be sooo cuuuute.

Edwin is trying to eat his boring vegetables (a new rule by Minister Jill to stop Edwinland subjects eating so much junk food), when he hears someone crying for help. An old hermit called Baxter runs into town yelling about a terrible monster that has gobbled up his goats and cow. It’s called a Voolith.
Edwin – sick of his vegetables, and wanting to be a true king (who doesn’t have to eat vegetables) announces that he will go and defeat this Voolith in single combat (not actually knowing what that means.) But Emperor Nurbison (from Nurbisonia next door), sees another chance to defeat Edwin and takeover Edwinland. And if he can get Edwin gobbled up by a Voolith, all the better!
Another zany, wacky adventure with King Flashypants Edwin and his crew. Super funny with hilarious illustrations.

King Edwin, also known as King Flashypants, has his heart in the right place, but unfortunately, he has a tendency to put his trust where it isn't earned. When Edwinland, his kingdom, is threatened by a frightening monster called the Voolith, Edwin decides to rid the kingdom of the monster and track it to its homeland. But Emperor Nurbison claims that he, too, wants to fight the beast, and insists that the two rules joust for the right to fight the monster. As things turn out, he has had more than a few tricks up his sleeve, and things are not as they might have seemed. The book, the second in the series, features the same cast of characters as the first, and quite a lot of sly humor and unlikely heroes, in this case, a small horse named Colin. In the end, of course, the emperor gets just what he deserves, and the people and readers rejoice. Although this is a quick read, it is quite entertaining, and I always get a kick out of the well-intended but misguided Minister Jill. In this case, her ideas about vegetables don't pan out.

Lekker gek tweede deel over Koning Eddie. 😀 en dan ook nog eens opgedragen aan ALLE BIBLIOTHEEKMEDEWERKERS! Top! In dit deel zijn het vooral de illustraties die maken dat ik met een grijns zit te lezen. De teksten zijn iets minder scherp en humoristisch dan in deel één, hoewel ik toch meerdere keren hardop moet lachen. Keizer Nurbizoon die zich bijvoorbeeld in allerlei kwaadaardige! yoga-bochten wringt, wie verzint zoiets, hahaha.
Opnieuw zijn de binnenzijdes van het boekomslag, zowel voor als achter, voorzien van een mini verhaaltje. De hele uitgave ziet er weer prachtig verzorgd uit. Koning Eddie trekt ten strijde tegen het vreselijke monster Vellek. Maar keizer Nurbizoon doet er uiteraard alles aan om Eddie te dwarsbomen.
Voor alle liefhebbers van graphic novels en absurde humor vanaf 8 jaar.

Koning Eddie van Eddie land wiens fantasy / fantasie volle koningrijk wordt bedreigt door zijn kwade buur Keizer Nurbizoon.
Dit is alweer een geweldige kinderboek reeks.
Gezet in een zo'n fantasy middeleeuws wereld vol met verschillende soorten koninkrijken omringd door een onbekend oceaan en een eindeloos woestijn, bergen en donker woud dit allemaal gevoeld met verschillende wezens waarvan sommige vriendelijk anderen vijandelijk gezind zijn.
Het boek zelf is geweldig grafisch uitgewerkt het balanceerd tussen sprookje en een stripverhaal met zwart wit illustraties.
Mijn zoon heeft heel erg veel lol gehad tijdens de lezen van Konings Eddie waanzinnige avontuuren en ik kan jullie verzekeren, dat wij niet zullen blijven alleen maar bij deze ene boek.

This is about a monster called Voolith. It is terrorizing the town of Crong. King Edwin tries to battle the Voolith. Usually, I like informative books, so I don't really like this kind of book. But I like the plot of this, though. The drawings are a 6 out of 10. The creatures were pretty nice. It is a kind of funky-weird fiction book. And the Voolith eats everything...and I mean EVERYTHING!! (review by Max, 3rd grade)

This is a great book for kids aged 6-9 years. It's a favourite in our family, mostly because of the humour. Adults and kids, we all laughed out loud.
Parents may also appreciate that the main character is a good role model (apart from his food choices).
I wish there were more than just five King Flashypants books!

So stupid-funny-over the top!
I get to use all my funny voices (and the echo function on our karaoke microphone for the Evil Laughs), my 11 year old gets to roll her eyes at me while giggling, and my 6 year old gets to laugh until his belly hurts.

Bonkers sequel - great fun for young readers/listeners
My son adored the first King Edwin book and was very excited to see this second in the series. These are completely off-the-wall bonkers stories but very, very funny and entertaining and my son complained each evening when I put in a bookmark and refused to read another chapter.
Edwin and his subjects are all suffering form being made to eat 50 portions of vegetables a day by Minister Jill. It is almost a relief when news comes (from a possibly naked hermit) that a terrifying creature called a Voolith is on the rampage. Edwin decides to go and face it in 'single combat', not knowing quite what this actually means.
With Minister Jill, Megan the Jester and Colin the horse beside him, Edwin must face yet again Emperor Nurbison before he takes on the Voolith.
My son and I both love Nurbison and his 'foo hoo hoo hoo' evil laugh. He's a great evil antagonist and Riley has a lot of fun playing with conventions (he reads books giving evil words each day to use) - we loved Nurbison's (mega mega mega mega) megaphone.
Very visual, pictures abound on every page, the characters are very easy to voice and there are lots of minor characters with quirks you look forward to and recognise. The author even manages a moral message or two, as well as including some exciting scenes (monster rampaging, volcano finale).
Edwin is a good role model hero, aged nine, with adults around him that are both sensible and comic.
Fun to read aloud and suitable for independent readers (short chapters), there's a short comic strip at the end that we liked and a funny endpage that you need to turn around and around to read. Thanks for that Mr Riley!

When Baxter the hermit from the Wilderness of Crong tells the people of Edwinland that he saw Voolith the monster, thought to be dead, eating his goats and cow, nine-year-old King Edwin Flashypants vows to defeat it. Evil Emperor Nurbison has plans of his own, however, and sends King Edwin on a wild goose chase into a volcano with fire toads. In the meantime, Nurbison tricks Voolith into becoming his slave so he can take over Edwin’s kingdom while he’s gone, but that backfires when Voolith eats him instead. Upon Edwin’s return, Voolith gobbles him up (covered in pumpkin slush). Luckily, Voolith burps him back up, and Edwin discovers that every hero needs a crew to defeat a monster. This rousing romp, complemented by expressive black-and-white cartoon illustrations, ends with a teaser for the third book in the series and a short comic strip.

This book made me laugh (a lot!)
King Edwin has been told by his Minister Jill that the whole of his empire is eating too much sugar and she orders that only vegetables can be eaten. Poor King Edwin; he hates the new diet and is very happy when he hears that there is a monster called Gizimoth in Edwinland.
King Edwin must defend his land from the Gizimoth and horrible Emperor Nurbison.
The story was very funny and I loved the drawings.
