Our Covenant God : Living in the Security of His Unfailing Love

Rate this book
SOMEONE LOVES YOU. UNCONDITIONALLY. UNSHAKABLE, UNFAILINGLY. That Someone is God Himself. But how can that be possible? Why would God love you so? Because He has fashioned an unbreakable covenant between Himself and you. And He always keeps His promises. “Everything God does,” says Kay Arthur, “is based on His covenant.” And when you understand how thoroughly the dynamic concept of covenant permeates everything God says in His Word, and everything He does in our lives, you’ll come to experience one of the most stabilizing, most freeing truths you’ll ever know.

In a culture in which unfaithfulness is rampant, God’s “fierce, ferocious loyalty” toward us is difficult to imagine. And yet, through her characteristically warm and wise exploration of the Scripture, Kay Arthur will lead you into discovering the stunning truth of God’s covenant–and help you experience its revolutionary truth in your life.

The Bible reveals the covenant bond to be the highest personal relationship possible. In ancient times, covenants were solemn, binding agreements supremely honored above all others. Making a covenant represented an unqualified, total commitment of one person to another–unconditionally, totally, eternally.
As you follow the thread of God’s covenant woven throughout the Bible, you’ll discover the awesome privilege of getting to know the Lord as your Covenant God.

This is not an easy read, it took me months to read through it, attempting to absorb as much as possible as I went. But, it is a good read as it shows the faithfulness of our Covenant God from the beginning of time to now, as well as what His Covenant promises in time still to come to all who put their trust in Him.

Having studied the Precept Upon Precept Covenant study years ago, I found listening to this audio book to be like visiting an old friend. It was wonderfully refreshing to hear once again about our covenant keeping God. Kay Arthur is a solid Bible teacher. I also enjoy how open and authentic she can be about her own life and walk with the Lord as she illustrates some points she’s trying to bring home. I enjoyed this book thoroughly.

This is a great book! I did not always love the stories she used to illustrate chapters as I felt like they were over-dramatic and not really on-topic (like the lady who had been a victim of incest growing up), but I loved the rest of the book!!! So helpful!!! Here’s some quotes from it…

“Not understanding how the covenants play into our salvation can bring a great deal of confusion and bondage. What does genuine Christianity look like? How is it lived out? Does it put us in bondage or does it set us free? And if it sets us free, how free are we? Can we tack-on a profession of faith in Christ, live however we choose, and be assured of heaven? And if we can’t, what on earth is going to restrain the desires of this fleshly body we still live in? What’s troubling Christendom today is exactly what was troubling the Galatians….”

“Justification has always been by grace through faith…NEVER NEVER any other way. The covenants God made with men prove that. Once Paul set his readers straight on his authority as an apostle, he immediately turned to Abraham as his prime witness. Wasting no time, he took the foolish Galatians right back to the day when God made a covenant with Abraham. He quoted from Genesis…to show that Abraham became a believer looong before the law ever existed. He quotes Genesis 15:6, “Even so, Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Abraham set the pattern. Be sure, it is those who are of faith who are the sons of Abraham.“

“And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin and it shall be the sign of the covenant between me and you. You think - gross. Why circumcision? Why there? Because, beloved, the cut is at the closest site of paternity. And it is for Abraham’s descendants. The seed comes from the man. It comes from where the cut of covenant will be made. It’s a covenant with Abraham and his seed. Now it’s turned from gross to awesome, hasn’t it? Isn’t understanding covenant a delight?”

“Why was the law given? Galatians 3:19 The phrase, ‘because of transgressions,’ can be translated ‘for the sake of defining transgressions.’ The law was given to define sin. To show us what sin was. Note that the law was simply added. It did not replace the Abrahamic covenant. It didn’t alter any of its promises. It was simply added. As you think about the verse, don’t miss that important word, ‘until.’ The law was added “until” the seed should come…who Paul says was Jesus Christ. The law was there to stay until Jesus Christ came. Has he come? Yes he has. Thinketh on that one and hangeth thou in there beloved. We have to take one verse one step at a time, but it is so worth it…what enlightenment it brings. What understanding. What relief. What freedom. A sinner cannot make himself righteous. A sinner cannot keep the law. Therefore, even though the law is good and right, it cannot save a person because it cannot change a person. But if the seed could get inside us, he could change us. And that’s what the New Covenant, which we’ll look at next, is all about. The New Covenant happens by faith – by believing and receiving the promise. Galatians 3:23 The seed was promised through the Abrahamic covenant. Until the seed came, the law was given for the purpose of defining our sin. Pointing out sin as sin. While also, as we see in this verse, protecting us – keeping us from sin by defining it so we don’t reap its awful consequences. When we believe, we throw open the door so our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the seed of Abraham and the Mediator of the New Covenant, graciously enters in. And then God looks at you and says, ‘Justified.’ Declared righteous by faith…for He sees Christ in you – the hope of glory.”

“All of this is ours because our Covenant God in longsuffering love was willing to pay the ultimate price to restore us to oneness. Patiently He waits, quietly He moves, in lovingkindness drawing us to Himself. This is what he has done with all who have come to Him through His Son and who have taken the walk into death that leads into life eternal…passing through the ripped veil of the flesh of the Son of Man into a New Covenant and a whole new life – a life lived on the basis of Covenant. And now dear child of God, as I conclude this book on tape, I must tell you that never – never in my life – have I observed so many people and such need and such pain and such desperate straits, so far from knowing the only one who can heal them. Do you see it as well? If you do, then how confidently are you able to point the hurting people around you to the Covenant God. The only one in whom they can fully trust. And you trusting Him yourself? Wholeheartedly? Unreservedly? For everything? All the answers, all the insights you need to minister to others {are found in the Bible…so study it and mark it}. The Scriptures are saturated with the concept of covenant and how understanding the covenant is the doorway to a deeper understanding of all that God has so graciously revealed to us in His Word. Know and do His Word as never before. The only way to keep deepening your trust and understanding of God is to continue studying and meditating on His entire Word and reliance on the work and teaching of his Holy Spirit. Remember that God’s ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not ours.”

“The Bible’s last mention of covenant is Hebrews 13:20…a benediction for you…”

Really beautiful book- I loved most of it. I would give it a 4.5/5 if I could. The only thing that I didn't like is that she seemed to discredit the Law and say that it was a bad thing. The Law in it of itself is not bad- God made it for a reason. We, as followers of Christ, are not required to follow the Law, but rather obligated. I think that we should follow the Law not out of necessity- we are not saved by our own works after all- but because God made it to help protect us and bring us back to Him. After all, Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." (Matthew 5:17)
Peace in Christ be with you, ילד האלוהים.

I was raised in a false religion that didn't teach the biblical covenants. They denied the new covenant and rejected that the old is obsolete (Hebrews 8 and Galatians 3). Hebrews and Galatians used to be confusing. Not anymore! This great book cleared up the Biblical covenants, namely the Abrahamic, Sinai, and New. I was able to read scripture with a clear understanding after this book. Highly recommend.

This book was really helpful in my understanding of the old covenant God made with his people, which enriched my understanding of the new covenant God made with all people, through Jesus’ death and resurrection. I was also reading through the Bible books of Exodus and Deuteronomy while reading “Our Covenant God” and that definitely added more depth to my experience and learning.

"Our Covenant God" studies the covenants God has made with humans (as recorded in the Bible). The focus was mainly on the blood covenants found in the Bible and how, since it was so binding between humans, that should give us confidence in the covenant God has made with us. She quoted information from a book by a person who studied blood covenants all over the world and throughout time to help provide cultural background information.

I thought that Kay Arthur did a good job describing how covenants work and showing them "in action" in both the Old and New Testament. She'd take an aspect of covenant making, describe it, show an example of it in the Bible, and then make an application point about it before moving on. Very good information.

I'd highly recommend this book to Christians, especially those who haven't read information on blood covenants before.

I am not a real big fan of the precept books. I read one once and I really did not like it. So I was reluctant to read this book. I think it was given to me a number of years back. But I decided to grab it. The book kind of started off slow but it really grew on me. Ends up it was a pretty good book. One thing however that really got annoying. If I am called "beloved" again I might just puke. Not that I am apposed to that word and indeed I guess I am "beloved" but it was just awkwardly used and way to often.

Has a permanent place on my 'highly-valuable, to re-read (multiple times over my lifetime)' shelf.

This one was a tough start for me, but full of wisdom, and all Christians would benefit from a better understanding of what Covenant relationship is. This book concludes the achievement of completion of my 2015 Christian non-fiction reading goal.

A great exploration into the covenant God has made with each us. This book shows you "what it means to be in Covenant, to know that you know that you have a Covenant Partner you can call upon -- one who understands your needs to the fullest and is there to meet them" (page 111).
